Last week, I went out to dinner with my friend, Kim, to celebrate her birthday. Since it was a happy and festive event – even though it was just the two of us on a Tuesday night, I decided to go with celebratory makeup and that means taking a break from my usual neutral matte shadows and neutral eyeliners. Instead, I pulled out my Lorac Unzipped Gold palette and essence waterproof gel eyeliner in a teal shade and went for a more glam and colorful shades. This is my out-to-dinner look.
This was originally going to be a collaborative post with other bloggers on colorful eyeliner. Although things changed, I still liked the theme. So let’s talk about the eyeliner. The essence waterproof gel eyeliner is a real steal. I picked it up months ago at Ulta for about $2.99. It goes on very smoothly, and it doesn’t smudge. It definitely stays on, doesn’t wash off even with soap and water, and it requires makeup remover to come off. Plus, I love this teal shade (essence doesn’t seem to name their shades!). It isn’t wild, but it definitely gives me a nice break from black, brown, grey, and greyed-purple eyeliners.
As I mentioned earlier, I used the Lorac Unzipped Gold eyeshadow palette on my eyes. Even though I wear matte shades most of the time, I love this palette. The shadows are so smooth and buttery with no fall out. <3<3<3 For this look, I used Unleashed, a golden shimmery bronze on the eyelid, and Undeniable, matte milk chocolate, in the crease and V. I used the essence gel eyeliner along my upper lashine with a small wing, and I used it to line the outer third along my lower lashline.
Here are the details on the rest of my festive look.
Face
- Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet+ Foundation: I love this foundation that I bought during the summer. But looking at these photos, I can see that it is not the right shade for me now that I’ve lost my tan! I’ll put this away till I spend some time out in the sun! Yikes
- Stila cream blush in Pink Pointsettia from the holiday palette “Under the Mistletoe”
Eyes
- Urban Decay Anti-aging Primer Potion
- Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eyeliner Pencil in Zero to tightline
- Lorac Unzipped Gold Eyeshadow Palette: If you don’t own this palette, just buy it before it’s gone. It is undeniably gorgeous, a blend of gold, rose gold and brown buttery shadows in mattes and significant shimmer shades.
- essence gel waterproof eyeliner, teal
- Shiseido Lash Curler
- 2 mascaras: Too Faced Lashgasm and L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Intenza Mascara
- Milani Color Statement lipliner pencil in Naturally Chic on my eyebrows!
Lips
- Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick in Tulip: so creamy and comfortable
I wore this look with a black tunic with sparkly teal and blue bugle beads at the neckline and a cobalt blue sweater. I think it worked quite well.
Do you wear colorful eyeliner from time to time? Which shades do you like to wear? How/where you like to wear them – upper lash line, lower lash line, part of the lash line etc.? I’d love to know!
I like it!!! Pretty!
I love Urban Decay eyeliner pencils. They are my favorite and I own a variety of shades. My current choice for a teal-ish looking shade has got to be Junkie. I rediscovered it again in my stash earlier this year.
I usually wear colorful eyeliner just on my upper lid. I do not take any eyeliner all the way down to the outer corner. It helps my eyes look more open, lifted and youthful. If I wear eyeliner on my bottom lid I do so like you did in your pic. My eyes look too closed otherwise. And I rarely wear mascara on my bottom lashes. The older I get the more it ends up smeared no matter what trick I try. I never had that problem until I hit middle age.
I like the look of tightlining but rarely do it because my eyes start watering so badly from the effort. Maybe because I have hooded lids or I am not doing it properly. Plus my eyes are easily irritated.
I agree with you, Laura. In fact, I should have explained those tips in the post. I don’t draw eyeliner all the way down to the inner corner because I have sensitive eyes and dry eyes that water even without wearing any eye makeup. I do wear a lighter shade of eyeliner, usually grey/never black, on the outer third of my lower lashline because just as you said, lining the entire eye makes it look smaller plus it’s just too harsh at this age. But for me, tightlining is a life saver! On an everyday absence, I tightline and skip the eyeliner on my lid. Oddly, tight lining doesn’t irritate my eyes. I love UD and it’s one of my favorites. I haven’t found any eyeliner that doesn’t come off on my lower tightline. I’ve tried Marc Jacobs Gel Liner (that I love), L’Oreal Infallible, both of which aren’t supposed to transfer but they do too. I’ll keep looking!
Your makeup in your pics always looks so nicely done. I never would have guessed that you have sensitive dry eyes. Your peeps always look so clear to me. In most of my pics everyone comments that I look stoned. 😉
I love the look of tight lining the few times have managed to get through doing it. If I could I would do it more.
P.S. And I forgot to mention…I never thought of doing gold and teal together. So going to try it! Thanks!
The gold and teal thing came to me from looking at some of my jewelry: yellow gold with either blue topaz or aquamarine or with turquoise opal etc. I love the combo with jewelry so why not makeup?
Not worth tightlining if it irritates your eyes further. I am lucky that inspite of my dry eye and blepharitis, I can do it! (I can’t believe you look stoned. That’s a joke.)
I can attest that you looked smashing that evening!! You inspired me to try a more sparkly eye look the next time I go out for an occasion. The eyeshadow/eyeliner combo was gorgeous. And I didn’t notice anything out of order regarding your foundation shade…..? Laura, I notice the same thing when I tight line… I love the look, but it often makes my eyes water while I’m wearing the liner. The darker, more pigmented gel shades are the most irritating, for me. I actually have an old Arbonne pencil in dark grey that doesn’t go on as easily as UD or TooFaced, but it doesn’t bother my eyes much, either.
Thank you, Kim! It’s definitely fun to try out different looks for different occasions. Glad it was dark and you didn’t notice that my foundation was definitely a “summer shade”! Re: tightlining, maybe sticking with an organic eyeliner like Arbonne or maybe trying Gabriel Cosmetics (at Whole Foods) if you want to try something new makes sense to avoid eye irritation
Ooooh the shades in that palette are super! Great colors.

The Lorac Unzipped Gold palette is a stunner. It was worth the splurge!
Love the teal and gold! I have fallen into a black/brown eyeliner rut! My fave color to wear is purple eyeliner, but I also have some greens and blues I like wearing, too. I need to check out that Essence liner. I hear such great things about their makeup, and it’s so inexpensive.

Definitely worth stocking up on a number of essence’s product but especially the colored liner. With the Ulta $3.50 off $10 and essence’s frequent sales, it’s almost free!
I love the gold tones on you! This palette is going on my list!

I do wear color eye liner on occasion. My fave colors are navy and purples 🙂

I think that navy and purple are the colored shades that I wear most often. This was a definite celebration splurge!
I LOVE fun color eyeliner, and I own a ton in every rainbow shade from yellow and mint green to teal and hot pink, lol!!!! I can’t wear some of the more bold ones to the office but I enjoy them on the weekends! I’ll wear them mostly on top of my lid, sometimes on lower lash line. UD 24/7 and Stila’s liners are my Holy Grails.

That sounds like such fun, Judy, and you really know how to apply them. Would love to see your more colorful looks! I haven’t had good luck with the two twist up Stila liners I bought – white and periwinkle blue. Though they were lovely formulas, the tips broke off and would twist up anymore. I was sad that it happened with both of them.
You created a fantastic look! The gold eyeshadow is so pretty and bold and the blue liner is to die for!

I really like that Teal Shade (wished it was named something spectacular like ‘Tease me Teal’ or something) however I do not like waterproof liners, just something I don’t like to deal with. Great Look!

Love the name you came up with for the essence gel eyeliner. I hear you about the waterproof issue. I pretty much feel the same way, Kimberly, but this one was extremely gentle and came off very easily with my Rimmel Gentle Eyemakeup Remover. Other than the fact that I couldn’t wash the swatches off my arm with soap and water, the waterproof gel liner came off just as easily as the rest of my non-waterproof eye makeup with remover, thank goodness!
I so need that eye shadow palette! And I love your eye look, the gold and blue are lovely with your blue eyes.

That’s AMAZING that you’re getting such great wear from Essence! I was so sad when it was an International brand only but now I can get it at my local grocery store!
Krystal E recently posted…China Glaze Sally Beauty Supply Exclusive 2015
I wish essence was sold at my grocery store. Fred Meyer has a wonderful collection of essence when I conducted some market research for the brand. Here in the NE, it’s only at Ulta, and they never have the LEs which often have such cute stuff. The essence eyeliner was a great buy, and though it came off easily with my Rimmel eye makeup remover, it didn’t budge, not even with the soap & water that I used to try to get it off my arm! 😉
Everything you picked is great. I love that bronze from Lorac and now I’m thinking I really need that palette. Your outfit is beautiful and you picked the perfect makeup for it.

I love this look–it’s so fun! Something about the teal and gold just makes me think of summer (and for some reason ancient Egyptian makeup, which is also cool).

Oh My Goodness! I LOVE this look on you! That gold/bronze eyeshadow paired with the teal eyeliner looks amazing with your eyes! I’m always really hesitant to try colored eyeliners – just haven’t found a way to confidently wear them I guess! I stick to dark colors or dark purples – its my comfort zone! 🙂
Jen @ Gracious Luck recently posted…Avon Eyeshadow Primer {Review}
Thank you so much, Jen! I love the gold-teal combo too. I wear it a lot in jewelry, so I thought why not eye makeup? I haven’t been wearing a lot of brightly colored eyeliner later. I do have blackened purples, navy, greyed green, dark brown etc, but I’ve veered away from the brights for some reason. It was fun to try it again. You should give a real purple a go, maybe just on the lid or just on the lower lashline or part of the lower lashline, for a little pop. Stay tuned, I’ve got some beautiful and very colorful liquid eyeliner to show soon!
What a beautiful look! I passed on this palette, waiting for the new one with the pinks to be released. But, this made me change my mind 🙂 I wear the MUFE powder foundation, maybe I’ll try the liquid you used. I’ve heard good things about it. I love your outfit too.
Valerie, I heard about the new palette with pinks/rose shades but I haven’t seen it yet. I’m wondering if it will be out in time for the Sephora sale event this week? Do you know? I like the MUFE Mat Velvet Liquid Foundation very much. It’s easy to apply and gives good coverage. The shade I was wearing, I bought in July, and I noticed in the photos that it is too dark and yellow for me now! I want to buy CoverFX Drops and add them to the foundation to lighten it up. Have you seen the CoverFX Drops yet? And thanks for the kind words about my outfit. I recently bought both pieces and have been getting a lot of wear out of them, separately and together 🙂 Have you gotten anything new for spring yet?
Hi! I just emailed a friend (a night owl like me), and she said it’s an Ulta exclusive and available now! OMG, I had no idea! I’m glad you asked! Of course, now I want both palettes, lol. That MUFE foundation looks nice too. Decisions, decisions!
🙂 I haven’t bought any new clothes yet, only sandals so far. I want to visit the Boston Marshalls soon.
Thanks for letting me know, Valerie, about the Lorac palette. Did you get an email from Ulta for $5 off $15? I didn’t look to see if it excluded prestige, but I will check. Plus, I need to go on the website and see what it looks like, lol 😀 Sandals sought great. I hope it’ll be warm enough for you to wear them SOON! I always stop into the Boston Marshall’s when I get my hair colored on Boylston St. What a great store!
So pretty Allison! I love the teal and gold together, it fun and not overwhelming. I just bought that Tulip HD lipstick too and I can’t wait to try it out, it looks so nice on you. Great outfit too, it sounds like you ladies had a fun night!

I’m swooning over that palette, but I already have so many neutrals! (is there even such a thing?) Beautiful look and a lovely outfit!
