Pantone’s Colors of 2016 Rose Quartz and Serenity

Did you see that Pantone chose two shades to be the Colors of 2016 instead of the usual one signature shade? Rose Quartz and Serenity, pale baby pink and blue.

Pantone’s color of the year choices are supposed to be symbolic or representative of the times as well as colors that are being favored by designers. I wonder what the pale, calm, serene shades that were selected for next year, a boisterous crazy election year. I suppose the two calm shades represent a hopeful choice!

The gender-bending quality of both shades for both men and women, boys and girls is an aspect of the two hues that has gotten a lot of play. Pink was originally a color associated with men in the 18th century, I believe, and it’s great that men in the late 20th and early 21st centuries have been taking to it again. Light blue has always been a favorite with both men and women.

Rose Quartz and Serenity have been mentioned as great choices for bridal attire. Even pale pink wedding gowns – that sounds fabulous to me! And there’s always, “something borrowed, something blue” for Serenity.

Both shades work well as winter pastels and of course they’ll be great for spring. Rose Quartz and Serenity will be lovely makeup and nail polish shades to be sure.

I’m not sure I’m quite as excited by this duo as I was about this year’s Marsala, but they are pretty. I can and will wear both of them. Time to break out my pale blue Coach purse!

So what do you think? Will you be wearing Rose Quartz and Serenity?

  1. Like you, I’m a bigger fan of Marsala than these colors, but there’s always a pale pink and baby blue nail polish that I’ll be excited about. lol.

    1. I’m amazed when I look in my closet and my makeup and nail polish stash how much I already own in these two shades. No need to run out and buy more, lol.

  2. I love your picks, Allison! I love the Mark Cross and YSL handbags that you chose!

    1. Me too, Helen. I wish they would magically appear at my doorstep 😉

  3. I love Rose shades so I’m happy about that pick! Always interesting to see what color they choose!

    1. Yes, it is, and I enjoy the rationale behind it. Not sure I completely “get” this color choice beyond the gender-bending thing, but I have lots of clothing and makeup in these shades so I’m all set 😉

  4. I like the idea of these colors better than marsala!
Phyrra recently posted…Too Faced Semi Sweet Smoky Chocolate Bar TutorialMy Profile

    1. I’m kind of the opposite because marsala was so good with my coloring. But I already own so much baby pink and blue, I don’t need to buy a thing!

I’m not a huge fan of pastels, though I do like pink a lot. I prefer pastel clothes over pastel makeup. I had a pink wedding dress, so I was happy to see you mention them.

I liked Marsala pretty well, but it seemed to flop. I saw Marsala clothes and makeup coming out right before it was announced, and right after, then hardly anything after that.

    1. Wow, I’m so happy to hear that you had a pink wedding dress! That is so awesome! I actually have quite a few eye shadows and lipsticks that are marsala shades though they may not have technically been sold as marsala. It was a great color for me. I don’t tend to buy Sephora’s Pantone collections. I have lots of Rose Quartz and Serenity nail polishes already, and I do like to wear light pink eyeshadow from time to time, but I agree that I prefer those pastels in clothing more than makeup.

  6. I’m loving both colors and ordered a few things in them over the Thanksgiving holiday.

    1. That’s very cool, Aleya. Did you know that they were the Pantone Colors of the Year at Thanksgiving?

  7. Oh, I didn’t know Pantone had released the color(s) for 2016 yet! It’s interesting that they’re doing two shades this year, but I like that it gives more options. I don’t see myself wearing a lot of serenity in my makeup, but rose quartz would be really pretty!

    1. i just saw it yesterday, Sammi, so I think it’s pretty new. I think it’s kind of cool that they have two colors this year, too. I like the pink for makeup and both for nail polish. I don’t feel the need to go out and buy more makeup/polish since I feel I already own these shades unlike past colors of the year like marsala, orchid and emerald.

  8. Love your post on this! The colors are not as haute as marsala, but they are symbolic, and that’s what matters to me! Hopefully, the world will calm down with the calming colors! <3

  9. Natalie Brown says:

I love pastels in clothing, decorating, and beauty products so I’m super excited about these shades! I have a rose quartz necklace that is one of my favorites and my wedding dress was pink. I’m also decorating my single girly-girl apartment shabby chic so, wow, I feel so in style. lol

    1. OMG, I can’t believe you also had a pink wedding dress, Natalie. I would have loved to have seen it! Another woman mentioned that she did too. How awesome! And I love that you’re using pink in your apartment. Yes, you are right on trend! I like the shades. As I was walking in the ‘hood as the sun was going down, the sky was definitely Rose Quartz and Serenity!

  10. I really like the colors and I’d find them easier to wear than some of the past Pantone colors. I’m a pink lipstick person so it fits me. Not so sure about the light blue in cosmetics though.

    1. For light blue, I’m thinking nail polish like the Zoya Blu that I already have. And I have a bunch of Rose Quartz polishes too. I’m glad that your lipstick stash is on trend already! Sounds like we can all save a little money with this duo by shopping in our stashes and closets 😉

  11. I love your collage and am looking forward to these new shades!

    1. Thank you! It was find to find such pretty pink and blue things to post in my Polyvore set. Rose Quartz and Serenity make me think of the evening sky and spring, although I love those shades for January-February fashions too.

  12. I love pastels. Makes me think of babies, Springtime/Easter.
P.S. Hope you are feeling better Allison. I got admitted to the hospital again yesterday after my doctor’s appointment. Brian brought me my laptop today. 🙂

    1. Oh no, Laura, I just said to Jeff about an hour ago that I was worried that you were back in the hospital again. What’s going on? I am so sorry to hear it and I hope they’ll patch you up well so you can go home for a while. I’m glad you’ve got your laptop so you don’t go crazy with boredom and depression while you’re there. Keep me posted if you can! I’m thinking about you! And today I felt more like myself, thank goodness, and I hope I will continue to improve and hope you will too!!

      1. When I saw the surgeon yesterday I was running a fever and my blood pressure was too high. The fluid in my drain had turned brown…staph. My doctor had me return to the hospital for another CAT scan. After viewing the results he admitted me. He is waiting to see what germs grow on the culture taken from the gunk in my drain. It takes about 3 days but my doctor told me not as many germs are growing on it this time at least.
My pain is being better managed here but I just want to be well again. I am getting too frail for a 50 year old woman. Physical therapy starts tomorrow. I am relieved because I know that I need it.
I am glad to hear that at least one of us is getting better. I hope to join you soon! 🙂

        1. I thought that was it. Those staph infections are horrible, so difficult to get rid of. My doctor was blithely talking about how it won’t be so bad if I need surgery for the diverticulitis but after getting staph from surgery, I want to avoid it at almost all costs! I hope that they can figure out which antibiotics can kill those bugs in your system once and for all! But I am glad that at least the pain management is better in the hospital so there is that benefit, plus they can keep an eye on the stuff that’s draining. Very happy to hear that you can do PT. I hope that will make you feel more “normal” to get up and about. Keep me posted if you can! I hope you can sleep

  13. Such a sweet selection of colors this upcoming year. I don’t do blue shades often, especially shades like serenity – but it’s still gorgeous.
Honeygirlk recently posted…Gift Guide for the Makeup LoverMy Profile

    1. I have a couple of nail polishes that are Serenity shades and a bunch that are Rose Quartz. I agree with you – sweet colors – but nothing that I need to run out and buy

    1. Oh no, don’t cry! The shades for 2017 will be here before we know it! But although these shades are sweet and they remind me of the late afternoon winter sky, they’re not exciting. I don’t feel the need to run out and buy anything in Rose Quartz or Serenity especially when it comes to makeup, and I already have a good representation in my nail polish stash.

  18. Oh wow these colours are absolutely beautiful, so so pretty xxx

    1. I find that I already have a lot of nail polishes in these shades and quite a few articles of clothing and accessories. They are sweet shades but not my favorites for makeup

  19. I love these colors!, they’re perfect for Spring 🙂 But knowing myself, I’ll rock them all year round.

    1. I think both of the shades would look lovely on you anytime!

  20. I like both colours this year, but I can’t think of many Pantone shades I haven’t liked… I’m easy to please apparently!
Bailey recently posted…Beauty Blog Coalition Weekly Roundup Vol. 65My Profile

    1. That’s good, Bailey! Do you find that you already have a good representation of these shades? I’ve got a lot of nail polishes in both of these shades, and probably some rose quartz eye shadow. Not sure I’m going to run out and buy much

  21. Great guide! I’m feeling the colors… maybe a little too soft but I can definitely work them in as accents!

I am curious what beauty and fashion has to unveil in 2016 with these colors that I instantly think for gender for babies! I like the selections so far!

    Ursula

    1. I think there are already so many beauty and fashion items on the market in these two shades that I don’t see them inspiring a lot of purchase, but that’s just my opinion. I already own lots of clothing, accessories, nail polish in both shades, and lipstick/blush/eye shadow in rose quartz.
