The weekend’s almost over. I think I lucked out that it wasn’t a beach weekend, because Jeff was kind enough to dig up the overgrown boxwoods and plant the new but small golden Cripps cypress shrubs (the green and yellow ones on either side of the steps, not the skeletal spruces in the urns) that will eventually be 15 feet by 8 feet if I don’t keep them in check. Now the dilemma is how much to trim the existing shrubs? What do you think? Also, if I toss the poor skeletal spruces in the urns, what else could I put in there that would survive a Boston winter? Any ideas?

Try holly bushes or boxwoods…
Rachel, do you mean little boxwoods in the urns? I’m going to do flowers in the urns now (probably the big begonias or double impatiens with sweet potato vine). I will look around and see if I can find some mini boxwoods. If not, I’ll probably do evergreen fronds and vertically placed branches with red berries. But I’d rather do living plant material that doesn’t need to be replaced every season. I’ve failed with the dwarf spruces 2 or 3 times. The front of the house doesn’t get much son. Also, my fault that I didn’t water them regularly. I hope boxwoods can survive the freezing/thawing of being in the urn through the winter. Thank you very much! I wouldn’t have thought of boxwoods, and that’s what we just dug up and threw out 😉
