Three New Lipstick Shades from Ilia, A Better-For-You Brand I’ve Just Discovered

Lipstick is my favorite form of makeup. It’s immediately transformative. It can change my mood as well as my look.

So of course, I was excited when I got a chance to try out three new shades from Ilia, a brand that makes lipsticks made from a high percentage of organic ingredients and bio-active botanicals. Anything that’s on my lips, I end up ingesting so when I can, I like to use a lipstick with natural and organic ingredients.

I received three new lipstick shades from Ilia that launched on September 8.

The theme for the lipsticks was taken from one of my favorite classic novels, Dracula! The book is fun to read, definitely creepy. I think I’ve seen every movie version of Dracula to date starting with the old Bella Lugosi movie to the uber-creepy Nosferatu to Francis Ford Coppola’s lush Bram Stoker’s Dracula from the 1990s. I’m definitely a Dracula devotee. So I enjoyed the fact that the three new lipsticks were named for Dracula characters:

  • Madame Mina: a limited edition nude mauve
  • The Brides: a limited edition warm nude
  • Lucy’s Party: blood red, of course! In fact, I’m wearing it right now!

The three lipstick shades are very flattering. As I mentioned, I’m wearing Lucy’s Party, and this oxblood red shade is perfect for fall and for the holidays to come.

The lipsticks, made with 72% organic ingredients, contain a moisturizing blend of cocoa butter and sesame oil as well as rose hip oil known for anti-aging antioxidants vitamins A and C. Yet, the lipsticks are as light as a feather on the lips.

The lipstick bullets have a nice point that allow it to go on easily and cleanly, and they do not feather. I’m always relieved when I don’t need to search for a lipliner. The lipsticks are buildable, and I prefer a couple of swipes of the two neutrals to get fuller coverage. On the other hand, Lucy’s Party, the blood red shape, gives me just about full coverage with one swipe. The finish is demi-matte.

I’ve been enjoying Madame Mina and The Brides primarily for everyday and casual occasions, and Lucy’s Party for when I want to amp things up. I was surprised to find that the lipsticks don’t transfer. I’d call them medium-wearing lipsticks giving me a few hours before I need to apply.

Ilia Lipsticks – there are 15 permanent lipstick shades including new Lucy’s Party as well as the two new limited edition shades for fall – are priced at $26. They’re available on the Ilia website, Sephora, Bella Cuore online, Credo Beauty online, Harvey Nichols, Net-A-Porter, and other select retailers worldwide.

The Ilia brand started in Canada in 2011 with Lip Conditioners but the company is now based in Los Angeles and has enlarged their product offerings to 40 but with a continued emphasis on lip care. No wonder my lips feel so good wearing this light-as-a-feather lipstick! The brand is certified with the Leaping Bunny and the products and ingredient are not tested on animals.

    1. I read that the brand was started in Canada so it should not be difficult to find there. Plus it’s sold at Sephora! These 3 lipsticks are so lightweight, I don’t know they’re still on. I keep having to check my mirror, lol!

  2. Those are three gorgeous neutrals! I have one ILIA lip gloss, and it’s totally amazing, so I bet the lippies are fantastic too.

    1. I like them a lot, Anastasia. I’m really curious about their lip conditioners, glosses, sticks etc.

  3. I have a few older light lipstick shades from them. I’m surprised how long the brand has taken to get its name out since it’s a wonderful natural brand of cosmetics. I like Madame Mina best of your three.

    1. I had never heard of Ilia before and I was surprised to learn that it’s sold at Sephora. I wanted to like Madame Mina best because she was my favorite character, but the shade is a little lighter than my lips and it doesn’t show up on me as well as I would like. It looks like a peach in my swatch but it’s a nude. I’m sorry I used it or I would send it your way.

    1. Ilia lipsticks are quite lovely with lots of shades to choose from. I like the fact that they started with lip conditioners so the lipsticks definitely are better-for-you types but the pigmentation is still very good.

  13. I had an Ilia lipstick from a beauty box but gave it to my sister because the shade was too deep for my tastes. Got to ask her what it was like. I’ve only see the Christopher Lee version – though I read the book. My Dad is a Dracula-fiend; think he’s seen quite a few versions (and unauthorised sequels lol).

    1. Your sister lucked out, I think, getting your “cast off”! Did you like Dracula, the book? I really did. It has stayed with me for many years. I wonder if you dad has any versions to recommend to me that I may have missed, lol

  14. I have heard of this brand but I’ve never tried it! I love that it focuses on more organic ingredients 🙂

  16. Those are beautiful shades for fall and winter! I agree, better for you types of ingredients should be something we all take into consideration more often.

  17. Lipstick is my favorite makeup too! I’ve never heard of the brand but I love the Dracula theme, and the shades are very pretty.

  18. These look really nice. The color doesn’t look super pigmented either, so it would be nice for days you want a wash of color without being fully done up

    1. Two of the shades are neutrals very close to my skin tone so they are perfect everyday shades. The red Lucy’s Party definitely is a strong shade. I should have done lip swatches but I wanted to get the post up and it was dark out. In reality, they are quite pigmented lipsticks, not a wash of color like a balm.

  19. I like Lucy’s Party shade the best…I got a lipstick that I got from Birchbox that I will be wearing this Fall!
