My September 2017 Beauty Boxes: Ipsy and Sephora Play

This month sure went by fast. Both Ipsy and Sephora Play for September arrived in my mailbox on Friday.

Both contained things I like as well as, sadly, one near miss. Let’s take a look.

Ipsy Like. A. Boss.

This month’s Like. A. Boss. themed bag from Ipsy comes in an embossed black plastic makeup bag that seems quite boss-like.

So what did I get?

  • This Is Feel: Feel Renewed Pumpkin Walnut Facial Cleanser, deluxe sample: I’ve never heard of this brand, but I like this kind of little skincare pouch. Pumpkin Walnut sounds like a good fall exfoliator. Eager to try it.
  • Luxie 207 Medium Angled Eye Makeup Brush, full size, $12: I adore Luxie makeup brushes, and I was happy to get this angled eye makeup brush because I don’t have one. This makes my 8th Luxie brush from Ipsy – thanks!
  • Real Elemental Practice  Bio Fresh Mask with Real Calming Herbs, deluxe sample: I’ve never heard of this brand either, but I love trying new masks.
  • Smashbox PhotoFinish Foundation Primer, Radiance w Hyaluronic Acid, deluxe sample: I’m happy to try this new Radiance foundation primer from Smashbox that’s a rose gold shade. I like that it contains HA for my dry skin, and I hope the Radiance shade gives a nice glow. I’ll let you know.
  • Elizabeth Mott Pop! Goes the Shadow, Toasted, deluxe sample: A brownish metallic, this looks like a nice subtle shade that I could wear for every day. It has a buttery, smooth feel to it. Here’s what it looks like as well as a swatch over bare skin.

With four deluxe samples and one full size product, it’s complicated to figure out the value of this month’s Ipsy bag, and I’m too lazy. But with the Luxie makeup brush alone, it’s over $10 that I paid for the bag. I like everything that I received so this month’s Ipsy bag is a win for me!

Sephora Play Fall Into Beauty

Sephora Play has an autumn beauty theme, but a hot pink satin bag that says, A Change of Face. I like the pink satin bag.

I’d say this was a mixed bag this month from Sephora. The winner for me, as I mentioned, was the Laura Mercier red lipstick. And I was happy to get a travel size Belif Moisture Bomb. The hair mask, though not so exciting, is something I’ll use. The major disappointment was the Gimme Brow Gel because the color was so far off for me. The liquid eyeliner from Stila is nice, but how many black eyeliners can a girl have? Stila makes liquid eyeliner in a slew of shades. Why not something besides black for a change?

Also, I liked both bags equally.

What did you get from Ipsy and Sephora Play this month?

  1. I’m impatiently waiting for my ipsy to arrive! 🙁 And Sephora play! is not bad but I prefer last month’s bag which has better products imo.

    1. I was so disappointed that the Benefit brow gel wasn’t even close to my shade. I really wanted to try it. Hope you get stuff you like!

  2. Morning…….☕️☕️🌻Lot’s of “try me” goodies! So fun. For me it’s “brown” tones in eyeliners 👀. Then I smudge them. Nothing harsh looking. At 68 yrs ones eyes must be soft looking. Getting Fall 🍃🍂🍁like here in California, it’s a chilly morning here today. 🙋🏻❤️

    1. Chilly in Calif, wow, that must be a pleasure, DiEtta! I wish I had gotten these bags earlier coz I would’ve put the Benefit Brow Gel, shade 3 into your box. It’s your color, not mine 😉

  3. The Ipsy bag is a total win! I thought at first glance that the facial cleanser was like one of my toddler’s pouches, lol. I love the sound of pumpkin walnut!!!!

    1. Isn’t that little pouch so cute? It does look like baby food. I’m about to use the pumpkin walnut cleanser right now

  4. I really love the cosmetic bag and Toasted eyeshadow– so for me I would give the edge to the Ipsy bag.

    1. I agree – ipsy has the edge though I do love the red lippie from Laura Mercier in the Play bag. Wish that Benefit Brow Gel had been a different shade that suited me coz I had really wanted to try it. Oh well.

  5. Such good bags this month! Gimme Brow is an all time FAVE of mine and I LOVE when I see Luxie brushes in sub boxes!

  6. Booo I wish companies did better when it comes to matching colors for subscription boxes like this.

  7. I only get IPSY now since I’ve been too disappointed in the Sephora bag and I would be with your version of it this month. My IPSY is always different than yours though I did get the brush and that teeny weeny Elizabeth Mott shadow (in Gunmetal). Other than a very ugly nail polish in my bag I’m happy with it this month.

    1. Too bad about the ugly nail polish, but I would have been happy with either the E. Mott shade I got or Gunmetal. I am still on the fence about Sephora Play. I know I should cancel but then, I liked the Laura Mercier lipstick and the Belif moisturizer so I hang on another month

  8. Wow! Both of these look pretty good to me. I think I got different products in my sephora play box. Now I need to go get it out and see. I think yours was so much better! LOL!

    1. LOL, I’ll be interested in what you got in your Play bag. I just wish they had looked at my profile before sending the dark brown brow gel

  9. The eyeshadow is a pretty color but for me the bag would be meh.

    1. I had two products in each of the bags that I really loved. Basically, I was happy with both though I wish the Benefit Brow Gel had been my shade!

I’m so jealous of the brush and the smash box primer from your ipsy bag! I love the black bag it came in because my phone fits in it. And then I got a tarte mascara that I’ve fallen in LOVE with 😍

    1. Taste does have fab mascaras! Unfortunately my iPhone 7+ is just a little too big to fit in this bag coz I tried immediately after the bag arrived. It fits in the envelope style ipsy bag with the travel theme that we got earlier this year, thankfully. Ipsy was good this month!

  13. Adorable goodies ! I wish I could get that at my place too !

    1. I wish you could too, Uma. Have you considered the LookFantastic box? I think it’s a little pricey, but I know my blogging friend Renu loves it.

  14. I like this when I receive stunning cosmetic bags when i purchase something. Sorbet bags are one of the favourites that i’ve noticed that have cute little messages! I tend to store all my goodies from said brand in those bags.

Red lipstick are not one for me, i prefer pink, but red for my nails definitly!

    1. With both ipsy and Sephora Play, I have cute little makeup bags coming out of my ears, lol, but I love having them to give to friends and to women who read my blog. I too love red nails (though I love pink lips, I can wear red lips as well).

  15. I love the cosmetic bag!

  16. Once upon a time, I got over 4 beauty boxes each month. It’s been nearly a year since I canceled all of them though, things just got too repetitive. But, I do think Sephora’s bag is worth the price tag.

    1. I love the Laura Mercier mini-lipstick that I got in this month’s Sephora bag as well as the mini Belif Moisturizing Bomb. I’m disappointed that they sent everyone the same dark brown shade of Benefit Eye Gel – it’ll go into my giveaway pile unfortunately. But I do think that the Sephora bag was definitely worth the $10 this month and I think I liked the last month or two after being on the fence about the bag for the past year.

  17. I get both of these, and I actually felt a little let down this month from both. They were okay – I don’t regret having the subs, but there were no standouts for me

    1. Oh well, there are definitely meh months. The Luxie makeup brush and the Eliz Mott shadow from ipsy and the Laura Mercier lipstick & Belif moisturizing bomb made the $10 bags worth it for me.
