Hanalei Lip Balms and Sugar Scrub

One of the benefits of maintaining my Ipsy subscription is the discounts on products that participate in Ipsy’s subbie bags.

I got an email from Ipsy letting me know about a good deal from Hanalei, a cruelty-free brand of skincare and lip products from Hawaii. Last year I received a travel size tube of the clear Hanalei Lip Treatment (first reviewed here), and it joined the pantheon of my favorite lip treatments for my often super dry lips.

Although my favorite lip treatment is still Dr. Lipp Miracle Balm, a rich medical-grade lanolin lip treatment, Hanalei is a close second. In fact, I carry the Hanalei travel size tube in my purse makeup bag. I’ve been trying to make it last but I am at the end.

The Deal from Ipsy

The deal from Hanalei via Ipsy consisted of:

  • Clear Lip Treatment, travel size, 5 ml/0.17 oz.
  • Rose Lip Treatment, travel size, 5 ml/0.17 oz.
  • Sugar Lip Scrub, full size 22 g/0.78 oz.

all for $15 with free delivery.

The travel size tubes are usually priced at 3 for $20, and the full size Sugar Lip Scrub is priced at $25. So it’s like getting the two travel size Lip Treatments for free along with a 40% discount on the scrub! I bought this primarily because I wanted the Lip Treatments.

Hanalei lip products are made with natural ingredients Kukui Oil, Shea Butter, Agave, and Grapeseed Oil. The Kukui nut that grows in Hawaii is know for its ability to heal and repair dryness. While Hanalei emphasizes plant-based ingredients, they also contain petrolatum. I’m a long time user of Vaseline, so petrolatum is an ingredient that I use and find effective for my dry, often irritated skin.

Hanalei Lip Treatments

Hanalei Lip Treatments are thick ointments that squeeze out of a tube. I apply it with my finger. The Lip Treatment is thick, soothing and protective. It has no discernible flavor or scent. It’s long-lasting for me, and a little goes a long way. If I put it on at night before bed, it lasts through the night and definitely leaves my lips softer in the morning.

The new(ish) Rose Lip Treatment comes out of the tube red, but it doesn’t change my lip color though it enhances it a little. Hanalei also comes in a slightly lighter Mauve Pink that’s sold on the Hanalei website.

Ingredients: Lanolin, Petrolatum, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Beeswax, Aleurites Moluccana (Kukui) Seed Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) butter, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Agave Tequilana Leaf Extract, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil Unsaponifiables, Vanillin, Sodium Saccharin, Glyceryl Rosinate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Phenoxyethanol, Polyhydroxystearic acid, Isopropyl Titanium Triisostearate, may contain Titanium dioxide (CI 77891), Red 7 Lake (CI15850)

Hanalei Sugar Lip Scrub

The Sugar Lip Scrub is very similar in ingredients and consistency to the Lip Treatments.

The key difference is the scrub contains sugar crystals. What makes this scrub different from some other scrubs I use are:

  • the sugar crystals are fine rather than chunky
  • the consistency isn’t dry or stiff but ointment-like, just like the Lip Treatments.

You can see how smooth it looks in the photo above even though it has sugar crystals. The tiny sugar crystals don’t hurt like the bigger crystals can. Right now because it’s summer, my lips are not chapped and dry like they are in winter. So there wasn’t much to remove from my lips. It left my lips feeling smooth and hydrated. I’ll be curious to see how it does in the winter when my lips are flakey and dry.

Ingredients: Sucrose, Petrolatum, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Aleurites Moluccana (Kukui) Seed Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Citrus Limon Peel Oil or Flavor, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Ethylene/Propylene/Styrene Copolymer, Butylene/Ethlyene/Styrene Copolymer, Tocopherol, Phenoxyethanol

Current Ipsy Deal

I just went to ipsy.com to see if the Travel Size Lip Treatment/Full Size Lip Scrub deal is still on, but I saw that the current deal is 20% cash back on the full size Rose Lip Treatment and on the Sugar Lip Scrub. The regular price for each is $25, and with 20% cash back, it brings the price to $20. Still a good deal especially if you already know that you like Hanalei products.

Have you tried Hanalei lip products or any of their other skincare products?
