Breakouts At My Age: Help From An Old Favorite

A couple of days ago, I noticed a breakout on my forehead under my bangs. Then Friday night, there were two more above my eyebrow. Last night, when we got home from the beach and I had been wearing a mask on and off all day, I noticed another breakout just below the corner of my mouth. What gives? I thought I was long ago finished with breakouts.

Unfortunately, when it’s hot and humid out and my skin is covered by my bangs or by a mask, I end up with breakouts. Ugly, red, painful blemishes. Ugh.

What has worked for me in the past is switching to a gel cleanser from my usual hydrating cream cleansers and a little product that often works overnight: Shiseido IBUKI Multi Solution Gel (originally reviewed here).

Because I don’t have that many skin “emergencies”, also known as breakouts, my little jar has lasted me almost 5 years. That’s crazy. Also, I think next time there’s a Shiseido, Ulta or Sephora sale, I will pick up a new jar because after this long, I do believe the efficacy isn’t what it was. We are not meant to keep skincare products for 5 years, lol.

Shiseido IBUKI Multi Solution Gel contains salicylic acid as well as a plant-based complex of ingredients that soothe and hydrate. As a result, it gets rid of blemishes without drying out my skin. The product is one of those magical, reformulating gels that relevels in the jar returning to a smooth surface in the jar.

Also, the gel stays put and can be applied either under or on top of makeup. It’s really a miracle skincare product. It can be used on dry patches, enlarged pores as well as on breakouts.

So this is where my post takes a turn. I was looking for a link for where you can buy Shiseido IBUKI Multi Solution Gel when I discovered that the entire IBUKI product line was discontinued. That includes another favorite of mine, the best under eye brightener I have ever used, Shiseido IBUKI Eye Correcting Cream (reviewed here). I discovered that about 2 years ago Shiseido discontinued about 100 products in order to remake the brand to attract 20 and 30-somethings. Hmmm, I wonder how that’s working out, but then again, I clearly wasn’t repurchasing some of their products often enough. Nevertheless, you would think that the Multi Solution Gel would be popular among that younger demographic. I just emailed Shiseido Customer Service to find out if they have a similar replacement product, but I’m not holding my breath. I guess I better make what’s left in my jar last!

So, instead of me reminding you of a terrific blemish buster, what can you recommend to me for the occasional hot weather breakout?

Summer acne–what a bummer! I was wondering if dabbing a little of the Paula’s Choice salicylic acid toner (which I love, btw, thank you!) might help? In any case, hope it goes away soon. No fun.

    1. Kim, the Paula’s Choice BHA toner would be a great idea! I gave away all the bottles I had, lol. Maybe I will bring over a tiny bottle when you come back and you’ll give me a little bit to try??

When I get a break out…..yes at 70, I still get them I dab a little Frankincense essential oil on the breakout. It works. Try it! Be sure it is 100%, no carrier oil. Some Frankincense is not 100%. I purchase mine at The Vitamin Shoppe when they have a sale.

    1. Thanks, DiEtta, for that suggestion. I do have frankincense essential oil somewhere in my stash, and I will look for it and give it a try!!

  3. I still get some breakouts too! I keep think that I’m done and one emergees right about then. I keep a product on hand called Acnomel (I think) that zaps them pretty fast.

    1. Thank you, Stacie, for the recommendation. I looked up Acnomel, and I was interested to see that they have an adult version, a tinted version etc. If this doesn’t go away in a day or two, I will give it a try!

      1. I have the tinted version that I ordered on Amazon. I’m very impressed with it.

  4. Around your mouth definitely sounds like a result of wearing a mask. Good thing that you had the perfect product in your arsenal!

    1. Definitely mask-related. And the ones on my forehead were exactly where the band on my sunhat sits. Grrr.

  5. What a shame that this is discontinued. Maybe Shiseido can come up with someone similar that you aren’t familiar with. I have been using those little round circles that I have from a KBeauty company. Not the best but they do work.

Spot treat with salicylic acid you can buy from CVS or benzoyl peroxide over the counter. The latter can be drying though but your zit will heal faster.

  7. I need to add a product like this into my routine because I get breakouts but due to a lot of acne treating products being drying I don’t tend to keep them on hand with my psoriasis. Obviously I won’t be adding this product to my routine but I await an update on whether they have something similar. You might also try reaching out on social media, sometimes brand respond quicker when you tag them on Twitter and IG stories.

  8. It’s true wearing a mask all day isn’t condusive to good skin. Thanks for passing on this gem!
