The Wonder Pencil is incredibly hard to come by. Ulta told me they get their weekly delivery from NYX on Mondays. They suggested I stop by or call on Monday afternoons to see if they were back in stock. This went on for 4 months. I finally scored my Wonder Pencil last week.
What is a Wonder Pencil and why is it in such demand, you ask? The Wonder Pencil is a multi-tasking product that can function as a:
- concealer: It’s a great concealer to cover small imperfections like age spots, sun damage, small blemishes, broken capillaries, or small scars. The pencil is soft, goes on with little to no drag and provides good coverage for a small area.
- lip liner: While you can use it to stop any lipstick shade from bleeding, it’s great with nude shades.
- eye brightener: The Wonder Pencil is typically used along the waterline, the wet inner edge of your lower lash line. I think it also gives you an awake look if you line your upper lash line with this nude shade instead of using a dark or colored eyeliner. It’s a more subtle “awake” look than using a white eye liner that some women find too jarring (though I like the look!). You can also use the Wonder Pencil along the inner corner of your eye and/or on the brow bone to brighten the whole eye area.
The Wonder Pencil comes in three shades: Light, Medium and Dark. The shade range appears to be quite broad and inclusive. The Light is definitely light, I’d call it “fair”. Most likely, it will be my shade during the winter, and I intend to pick one up the next time I see them in-stock. With a slight tan, the Medium works pretty well for me (though maybe a tiny bit dark but acceptable), and I would assume it would work for a wide range of medium skin tones. The dark is fairly dark and should work well as a lip liner or eye brightener on all dark skin shades, though it could be a tad too light to use as a concealer on very dark skin tones.
I love this versatile product. At $4.49, no wonder it’s usually sold out! Although NYX is sold in some supermarkets like Fred Meyer, they have a smaller display, and I’ve never seen the Wonder Pencil there. As I mentioned, it is sold at Ulta when it’s not out-of-stock. It may also be available at Nordstrom — not in the cosmetics department, but in the Junior Fashion area. And you can always buy it from the NYX or Ulta websites.
The Wonder Pencil is 5 inches long, 0.04 oz./1g. It’s made in Germany.
One of the ingredients is Tocopherol. So if you’re gluten-free, you’ll need to check the source or pass.
So have you tried the Wonder Pencil yet? How do you use yours?
And BTW, if you decide to buy a Wonder Pencil, check out the eye and lip pencils while you’re at the NYX display. Read my quick review of the eye pencils from a couple of months ago, here: NYX Eye Pencils. They are a steal!
I haven’t tried the Wonder Pencil by NYX. I do wish the NYX display was better maintained at my Ulta .. it always looks trashed (sigh).

The Wonder Pencil really is worth a try. It’s soft and so easy to apply. I love it. The NYX display is often out of stock for lots of SKUs at my Ulta, but it isn’t a mess, thankfully. NYX is such a bargain that it’s one of the go-to brands for teens and younger women. Monica, I just noticed your post via CommentLuv. Dying to read it! 🙂
