Ni Hao Babe Skincare

When my brother was in junior high a million years ago, he took a class in learning Chinese. I am assuming it was Mandarin that was being taught rather than one of the other dialects. I remember that the first thing he learned to say was “ni hao” or hello, and I have remembered it all these years later.

I was recently given the opportunity to try out a couple of products from Ni Hao Babe Skincare or, in English, Hello Babe Skincare.

I did a search on Ni Hao Babe, and I discovered that it was founded by Rosi Ross, who describes herself as Hispanic and is from South America! She was recruited via LinkedIn to move to China and work for a large healthcare company on cross-border marketing and social media because of her digital media skills. She was 24 at the time. She also worked as a consultant to boost the sales of e-commerce sites, and she worked as a stylist for other companies. She started her first website www.rosiross.com that focuses on fashion and beauty four years ago. Meanwhile, she learned to speak Chinese.

But her company, NHB, is a genderless and supposedly borderless skincare company that emphasizes care for the environment as well as for the physical and mental health of the individual. And surprise, this clean beauty, cruelty-free and vegan brand is MADE IN AMERICA! Fooled me. Because of the Chinese name and the Chinese characters on the mailing box, I thought it was a Chinese brand. OK, now I’ve got it straight! It’s a brand founded by a South American, made in North American, with a Chinese name and Chinese characters on their shipping box. I would say it’s a multinational brand for Americans. Whatever.

I was sent two products:

Ni Hao Babe Intense Vitamin Moisturizer

Intense Vitamin Moisturizer is a lightweight, fast-absorbing, non-greasy moisturizer with a very faint sweet scent. The moisturizer’s key ingredients are hyaluronic acid, squalane, aloe vera, and a slew of antioxidants/vitamins: vitamins B3 (Niacinamide),  B5, B6, C and E. Its key benefits are hydration, protection from environmental stressors, and brightening skin and evening skin tone.

I think it’s a really nice moisturizer. Although positioned as a “daily” moisturizer, it doesn’t have sunscreen in it. But because it is so lightweight, it’s a good one to wear along with a separate sunscreen. For instance, I really like Paula’s Choice Youth Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF 50. But the Paula’s Choice sunscreen fluid is not rich enough for my dry, mature skin especially in the late fall/winter/early spring. And during this same time period, Ni Hao Babe Intense Vitamin Moisturizer is just a little too lightweight for me as well. But the two together are wonderful. Ni Hao Babe Intense Vitamin Moisturizer reminds me of Sonia Rosselli Water Balm Skin Prep, a lightweight moisturizer that many makeup artists love to use as a first step before foundation on their clients.

I would say, however, that Ni Hao Babe Intense Vitamin Moisturizer would be perfect for younger people or those with normal, combination or oily skin. For me, I think it would be delightful to use on its own in the warmer weather.

Ni Hao Babe Intense Vitamin Moisturizer comes in a 60 ml jar (I use one of my many scoops to scoop it out), and it is priced at $23.92. It’s cruelty-free, vegan, gluten-free, paraben-free, silicone-free, talc-free, and sulfate-free. It can be purchased on the Ni Hao Babe website.

Ingredients: Water, Squalane, Glycerin, Tetradecane, Butylene Glycol, Polyacrylate-13, Saccharide Isomerate, Acetyl Hexapeptide-37, Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid), Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Xanthan Gum, Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), Calcium Pantothenate (Vitamin B5), Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Pyridoxine HCl (Vitamin B6), Maltodextrin, Sodium Starch Octenylsuccinate, Silica, Polyisobutene, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Polysorbate 20, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Potassium Sorbate, Fragrance.

Enhancing Lip Moisturizer

The second product I received has the name, Enhancing Lip Moisturizer, written on the tube. However, on the NHB website, it doesn’t exist. Instead, a very similar sounding product is called Maxify Lip Plumper. I’m pretty sure it’s the same product.

But because the product I received was called Enhancing Lip Moisturizer, I tried it without reading the ingredients. It comes in a tube with a doe-foot applicator. I applied some to my lips. Unfortunately, I immediately knew I made a mistake. It has peppermint oil in the formula, and my poor dry lips cannot tolerate peppermint oil at all. So I used it once, and I can’t give it away. And I can’t use it again. Boo.

Nevertheless, if you aren’t bothered by peppermint oil, and most people aren’t, I think you might like this clear hydrating lip plumper. It’s made with glycerin and sweet almond oil for hydration and vitamin E for softness. The 4 ml tube is also affordable at $13.42, sold on the NHB website.

Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5, Ergothioneine, Portulaca Pilosa Extract, Sucrose Cocoate, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-38, Cetearyl Ethylhexanoate, Sorbitan Isostearate, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Acesulfame K, Acrylamide/Sodium Acrylate Copolymer, Mineral Oil, Trideceth-6, Tetrasodium EDTA, Potassium Sorbate.

Ni Hao Babe Skincare makes about 20 skincare products including cleansers and scrub, masks, several moisturizers, several serums. Check ’em out!

  2. The moisturize sounds wonderful, but I am so sorry to hear that the lip treatment includes peppermint among its ingredients! I know how sensitive you are to peppermint, and that definitely makes that a no-go for you, Allison!
