Paula’s Choice Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturizer

Yesterday, I mentioned Paula’s Choice’s other new-ish product, Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturizer, when I wrote about the 25% Vitamin C + Glutathione Clinical Serum (reviewed here). Since yesterday’s review was so long, I thought I’d wait till today to talk about Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturizer.

Paula’s Choice Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturizer

Here’s the product description of the Barrier Cream on the Paula’s Choice website:

An advanced repairing moisturizer that strengthens, smooths & improves skin’s delicate barrier in 30 minutes + locks in all-day hydration.

Clinically proven to improve skin’s barrier

  • Clinically proven to improve skin’s barrier
  • Delivers all-day hydration & prevents moisture loss
  • Visibly firms and supports elasticity for younger-looking skin
  • Light lotion with a dewy finish for all skin types

First, I love Paula’s Choice Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturizer. It is truly a delightful, relatively lightweight lotiony-cream that’s very versatile.

Most importantly, it does actually feel like it rehydrates my dry skin almost on contact. It’s excellent for anytime your skin feels tight, dry or dehydrated.

It’s a good moisturizer to apply over sunscreen or a serum or two because it doesn’t add a lot of heaviness. I’d say it’s a perfect moisturizer for at least three seasons of the year – spring, summer, autumn, but maybe not for New England’s cold winters (for me anyway) if worn on its own.

Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturizer comes in an airless pump, like many other Paula’s Choice products, to protect its efficacy. The white cream is fragrance-free. It absorbs very quickly, is greaseless, and, on me at least, it leaves my skin with a smooth, velvety texture rather than “a dewy finish”. It works well under foundation.

As I looked at a few websites that sell Barrier Cream, it is referred to by names emphasizing one of several different key ingredients that points to its versatility, e.g.:

  • Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturizer with Ceramides
  • Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid
  • Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturizer with Retinol (although I don’t see retinol or Retinyl Palmitate/Acetate/Linoleate listed among the ingredients!!)

I read through a lot of the consumer reviews on the PC website, and they were overwhelmingly positive. In fact, many women felt it was the best moisturizer they ever tried. I went to the Sephora website, and Paula’s Choice Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturizer is sold out! (I know that Sephora is having their 20% off sale now, but still!!).

Paula’s Choice Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturizer, part of the RESIST collection, comes in two sizes at the following MSRPs:

  • full size: 1.7 fl. oz. in the airless pump, $38
  • travel size: 0.5 fl. oz. in a tube (on the Paula’s Choice website), $13

The Barrier Cream is part of Paula’s Choice holiday sets (that are on sale for 25% off now on the Paula’s Choice website!) in both full and mini sizes. I believe it is also in the PC holiday sets sold at Sephora too.

Cruelty-free Barrier Repair is sold on the Paula’s Choice website, at Sephora and on Amazon.

Key Ingredients:

  • Skin-Identical Ceramides to replenish the skin’s barrier and prevent water loss
  • Tripeptide-5 protects natural collagen levels for firmer-looking skin and visibly reduces wrinkles
  • Watermelon Seed Oil supports the formation of ceramides essential for the epidermal layer

Ingredient List: Water/Aqua/Eau, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Ethylhexyl Stearate, Glycerin, Cocoglycerides, Squalane, Sodium Polyacrylate, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide AS, Ceramide NS, Ceramide EOP, Sodium Hyaluronate, Adenosine, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5, Citrullus Lanatus (Watermelon) Seed Oil, Glyceryl Stearate, Caprylyl Glycol, Hydroxyacetophenone, Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Hexylene Glycol, Tocopherol, 2,3-Butanediol, Xanthan Gum, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Phytate, Sodium PCA, Urea, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Trehalose, Polyquaternium-51, Triacetin, Cholesterol, Phenoxyethanol.

BTW, my friend Sue who just sold her house and moved to Washington DC is visiting me for a night or two, so I think I’ll take a day off from blogging 😀

Sounds wonderful. Too bad it’s out of stock at Sephora or I’d buy it instantly.

    1. I would check back again before the Sephora sale is over because this is a terrific moisturizer especially since you’re not wintering in the “snow belt”!

I started using this moisturizer today in the AM (I use Paula’s Resist moisturizer with retinol as part of my PM routine). Hoping for no “allergic” reactions. I used the previous version of this product for 10 years until one morning – hives. The new version seems nice, very moisturizing and not sticky at all. You are right, Marcia, that it will work well under makeup.

    1. Oh no! Were you able to isolate the ingredient that gave you hives? I truly hope that the new PC Barrier Cream suits your skin with no allergic reaction! LMK how it goes (fingers crossed). BTW, I started using retinAl instead of retinOl, recently. I have been reading that it works better than retinol for mature skin. I bought a bottle of Murad Retinal Serum during Murad’s 30% off sale a couple of weeks ago, and so far, so good. I have never had a reaction to retinol, and it’s been the same so far with the retinal serum. Review coming in a couple of weeks or so.

  3. During this season and the next my skin just wants to be more moisturized and it absorbs every product quickly. Not just my face but my hands too!
Thanks for sharing the list of ingredients. It looks good! I guess I’ll give it a try! *adding to cart*

    1. Paula’s Choice skincare products are so effective and relatively affordable. Their new Barrier Repair Advance Moisturizer is truly a lovely moisturizer, even for winter in Chicago!
