Olive and June “How Do You Spell Bougainvillea?” Jelly Polish

Last night before going to bed, I decided to change my nail polish. I reached for a polish that I don’t remember buying, but I must have. I don’t think I have worn it previously, and it was unopened and still wrapped in the bubble wrap that it came in.

From Olive and June‘s Long-lasting polish collection, I chose “How Do You Spell Bougainvillea?”.

When I grabbed the bright magenta shade, I assumed it was a cream, opaque polish. But later on, I wondered: is it opaque or does the polish have a jelly finish? Jelly polishes are a bit hard to manage because the sheerness can vary according to how much polish is on the brush, among other things. Do I do two coats, would three coats look better or would three be too much? What to do? But because I thought it was a cream, I assumed two coats would do it.

So, I was lying down in my bed watching television when I applied the magenta polish. The fan-shaped brush makes it so easy to apply that I don’t really have to concentrate. Or so I thought. I didn’t look at it too carefully as I painted away. At one point, I noticed that my thumb looked like it needed another coat, so I hit it again bringing the number of coats on that one nail to three.

After letting the polish dry for a few minutes, I put on the Olive and June Glossy Top Coat that I love. Again, I wasn’t paying rapt attention to it.

This morning, I looked at my nails and I questioned what type of polish I applied: was it a cream or a jelly? I usually love jellies, but this time, some of my nails looked more translucent than others. Plus, the majority of my nails looked more translucent at the tip that on the rest of the nail. Not exactly ideal, but I will live with it till my next mani.

In addition, I noticed that my nails wearing, “How Do You Spell Bougainvillea?“, look magenta in some light and pink in others. Oh well, it’s still a fun polish and it goes with the pink shirt I’m wearing to my appointments and to book club tonight.

Regardless, I still love Olive and June polishes. Honestly, they are so good that I can usually apply them while in bed, watching television.

Their new fall colors have launched, and I’ve had my eye on a deep garnet shade, “Garnet Glass”. It is a jelly, a deep red-brown that looks like red wine. It looks great on the models’ nails where it looks more red, but it looks maybe too brown on the swatch below? In addition, Olive and June describes the finish as “jelly sheer”. So this time I know for sure, “Garnet Glass” is a jelly. I will have to give it a little thought before I place my order, but it sure looks beautiful online. What do you think?

Today, I looked back at “How Do You Spell Bougainvillea?” online again, and O&J describes the finish as “creme opaque” and recommends two coats which is what I did. Drat, it’s not a jelly so why does it look like this? Maybe I didn’t shake the bottle enough after it sat unused for almost 9 months? Next time, I will give it a good shake and see if that makes a difference.

What’s on your nails now?
