ChiaDerm Serum and Balm: Serious Skincare from Chia Seeds

A few months ago, I was sent ChiaDerm Serum and Balm to try out and review. It was late autumn, I think, when I received them, and I put them aside while I was finishing up with other skincare products. Little did I know how important these two skincare products would become for me once winter took hold in New England.

ChiaDerm Serum, ChiaDerm Balm

Promotional Product

I am somewhat familiar with chia since it has become popular as a healthy superfood ingredient in breads, crackers and even water. Chia is an edible seed that comes from the desert plant Salvia hispanica, originally grown in Mexico. It dates back to Mayan and Aztec times. I hadn’t been aware that the benefits of chia were being used in skincare till ChiaDerm sent me their products. In fact, the founders of ChiaDerm discovered that the antioxidant benefits of chia could be harnessed to help skin heal. They are chia seed extract skincare innovators!

Here’s what ChiaDerm has to say about chia seed extract and its effect on skin:

“ChiaDerm is the first skin care system formulated to harness the natural restorative and hydrating benefits of chia seed extract – a rare natural ingredient with proven results. Clinical studies show that chia seed extract increases hydration, improves an array of skin issues, protects against damage, and restores the skin to its most radiant and healthy state.”

As I’ve been saying for weeks now, this winter in New England has been very dry, cold and lately bitter cold, and for the past couple of weeks incredibly snowy. I’ve got 9 foot snow banks at the end of my driveway! This pic was taken BEFORE the last storm when we got another 2 feet!

snow

Although I have a guy who plows my driveway, I still have to go out there and shovel what he can’t do with the truck. Which is a lot! So I’ve been spending hours outside shoveling just about every day over the past few weeks. Ugh. My bone dry skin is even drier now than it was in December before the serious snow hit.

Enter ChiaDerm Serum and Balm. I’ve been using both of these products to try to rehydrate my dry skin as well as protect it when I’m outdoors.

ChiaDerm Serum

ChiaDerm Serum comes in a blue glass apothecary bottle with a glass dropper to protect the efficacy of the ingredients. The serum is a thick liquid, and it has a unique smell that must be the scent of the chia seed. It smells like a grain. Not unpleasant, kind of like multigrain bread. And the scent quickly disappears. ChiaDerm Serum can be used on its own or it can be mixed with moisturizer to add more hydration. I’ve been doing both.

Before I went out to shovel this afternoon, I patted a few drops of ChiaDerm Serum – a little goes a long way – directly on my face. Next, I applied my moisturizer. And because I knew I was going to be out in the 16 degree weather for a couple of hours, I applied ChiaDerm Balm on top of that. I wasn’t taking any chances today!

Several times a week, I also use a little bit on my nails that are very dry this winter, and the serum sinks right in. The chia seed contains biotin that helps strengthen nails and hair. You can use a few drops on a dry scalp, too.

ChiaDerm Balm

ChiaDerm Balm is a mixture of chia seed extract paired with a complementary ingredient with medicinal properties, the Italian citrus fruit extract, bergamot. The balm is thick, colorless, and slightly grainy. Its consistency is something like raw shea butter or coconut oil when it’s in the solid form.

It melts from the heat of your body when you put your hand into the jar and apply it.

ChiaDerm Balm is a natural antibacterial and anti-fungal product, and it can be applied to burnt, cut, dry or irritated skin, hastening the healing process and reducing redness and scarring.

What’s great about the balm is you can use it wherever you need some extra hydration: hair, scalp, face, neck, body, and feet!  My feet are super-dry this winter so I put it on my feet with socks before bed. It really helps my feet more than anything else I’ve tried feel much softer.  And when I put both the serum and the balm on my face at night, I wake up with the softest skin EVAH!

It is made in the U.S, from U.S, grown chia seeds. You can purchase ChiaDerm products on the ChiaDerm website. I think it would make a great Valentine’s Day gift for a skincare lover!

I’m so glad I got introduced to ChiaDerm. It’s going to have a permanent place in my winter skincare, body care, haircare and nail care regimen from now on!  Now I’m thinking I should try some chia food products. Are you familiar with the benefits of chia??

  19. Like you, I only thought this was a thing in breads and the like. I just saw a review on ..Slashing Beauty, I think, for Chia WATER, and now chia skincare. It’s the new acai! lol. Sounds like a great balm, though.

    1. I saw Slashed Beauty’s chia water review a couple of days ago too, and I was laughing since I knew I was posting this ChiaDerm skincare review a couple of days later. You are right, Nidia, as usual: it’s the new acai!! But for me in cold, snowy New England both the balm and the serum are just the thing 🙂

  20. Jane Price says:

HOLY ! COW!!!!! That’s just TOO much snow!–shoveling EVERY day! That sucks.
Think God’s telling you to move!?
Okay. I’m ordering this. I really value your opinions and haven’t been disappointed in
anything you’ve recommended, yet. Do you use your vitamin c with this?
(It’s sunny and 68. We have the doors open. Don’t hate me!)
    jane-in t

    1. Jane, I just got in from another 2.5 hour shoveling session! We’re going to have another good size storm that supposed to start tonight and go until Tuesday morning. I shoveled off the deck where there was 2 feet of snow ‘coz I was afraid it would collapse with another 12+” that we’re supposed to get. And I dug out a path to the woodpile and brought in more wood for the fireplace. I’m sooooo sick of this. But I digress. I really love the ChiaDerm Serum & Balm for my super dry skin. It’s also good for burns, scars, and sunburned skin and dry nails. The serum can also be used for nails and hair. But before you buy it, are you sure you need it in 68 degree Texas weather??? Just want to make sure ‘coz it’s thick and emollient 🙂 If you do, let me know what you think.

  21. Jane Price says:

Oh Allison, you poor baby. I just can’t imagine. You shoveled more snow today than I’ve ever seen. Tuesday is a long time
under snowy conditions. I can only hope that the weather people are wrong and that the sun will shine.
It’s not always warm here. It’s going to be in the 30’s Friday.
And my skin is dry, no matter the temps.Maybe I don’t need the balm, but I’m getting the serum. You’re a good salesman.–Just
being honest about how a product works for you–sells me every time.

    1. Jane, the serum is great. It just occurred to me that it’s like argan oil. So if you’re swimming in argan oil at the present time, get the balm lol! I’ll keep you posted on snowstorm Marcus that’s on its way 🙂 I need a trip to Texas!

  22. This is the first I’ve heard of chia in skincare, but the serum sounds amazing, especially as it contains biotin too (so didn’t know that about chia!) Going to have to check it out!
