Do you have any kids or grandkids going back to school at this time who love snacks in their packed lunch? Or are you an occasional or regular snacker yourself?
To be honest, potato chips are my favorite snack. They always have been. Fortunately, I can keep my potato chip love under control (sort of), and I can make a bag of chips last for a fairly long time. But I wish I could eat chips everyday, lol!
Humble Organic Potato Chips
Recently, I was introduced to a new-to-me brand of all-organic potato chips that’s now being sold at Whole Foods throughout the U.S. and, of course, at Amazon.
How The Chips Are Made
First, Organic Humble Potato Chips are made from Certified Organic Potatoes. Unlike most potato chips, Humble Potato Chips are cooked with their skin on. In that way, there’s less waste as well as more color, flavor and texture.
Humble Potato Chips are traditionally cooked potato chips rather than kettle cooked. They are cooked in a light, high oleic organic sunflower oil. The Humble Potato Chip goal is producing thin, light, crispy, and better-for-you chips. IMO, their goal is certainly and deliciously achieved. Because their chips are so thin and light, I feel like I could eat a ton of them at one sitting (though I try not to, lol)!
Humble Flavors
Humble Potato Chips makes 5 flavors:
- The Original
- Sea Salt & Apple Cider Vinegar
- Smokey BBQ
- Creamy Dill
- Honey Mustard
I received one bag of each of the first four varieties to try out.
Although I primarily stick to “regular” potato chips (e.g. without flavors, though I occasionally get Sea Salt & Vinegar), it was fun to get to try new-to-me flavored chips. I was able to do a comparison between the flavor of Humble Sea Salt & Apple Cider Vinegar Potato Chips and other Sea Salt & Vinegar chips.
Humble’s Cider Vinegar flavor was more unusual, less biting and sweeter than chips made with white vinegar.
Of the three flavored potato chips I tried, I would say I enjoyed the Creamy Dill flavored Humble Potato Chip , perhaps because I had never tried any potato chips like Creamy Dill.
The organic seasonings or flavors of Humble Potato Chips are created by a chef whose metier is creating flavors solely for potato chips! Each flavors is dusted onto the chips in such a way that the potato flavor still comes through, though the Smoky BBQ flavor is a little more robust than the other flavors that I tried.
Humble Packaging
What was especially unique to me about Humble Potato Chips is that they are the first potato chip that I have ever heard of or tried that comes in a plastic-free, compostable bag. Imagine instead of throwing out the chip bag and adding it to our growing amount of refuse, you may be able to add it to your recycling, where the bag has been shown to breakdown in 90-180 days in municipal recycling compost facilities. I think that’s a big deal!
Humble Organic Potato Chips from Canada
Humble Potato Chips was started by Alicia and Jeff Lahey, CEO and COO respectively, in Canada where they live with their young son, Wilder.
In addition to being compostable, their packaging is produced in both English and French.
Each 5 oz./142 g bag is certified as follows:
- USDA Organic
- Canada Organic/Biologique Canada
- certified gluten-free
- certified Kosher
- Eco Certified
- Certified Compostable
- Plastic-Free.
My response to these new organic potato chips in compostable packaging? YUM!
Oh I like a thinner chip like this. I’m not a fan of kettle chips. I’ll have to look for them when I go to Whole Foods.
Thank you, Marcia!!
