I just finished watching the opera La Traviata for about the twentieth time. I saw it performed at the Met many times when I lived in New York. In fact, one of the subscribers who sat next to me with his wife during two seasons died in his seat during the second act. Harrowing and intensely sad though that was, the performance actually continued after the ambulance arrived. Tonight, Jeff and I watched La Traviata on Live from The Met on TV, even though we saw the same performance in February on a Met simulcast at a theater near where I now live in Massachusetts. No matter how many times I see Traviata, no matter what the performance or production, I always cry my way through it. Tonight was no exception. The soprano, Diana Damrau, was especially fantastic. Here’s a short video on the making of this new production, if you’re interested.
