Besame Mini Lipstick Set

Yesterday, I wrote about what I’ve been spending my own money on, and the Besame Mini Lipstick Set was one new thing that I just couldn’t pass up!

Besame Mini Lipstick Set

Besame is one of my favorite cosmetic brands because it reminds me of my mother. It’s vintage all the way. Besame exalts vintage glamour, especially Hollywood glamour.

I’m glad that Besame has come out with sets of minis. They did it last year with the mini set of their fragrances ( reviewed here). It was a wonderful way to try out all the scents to help me decide which work best with my body chemistry. And now they’re repeating what I assume was their success with minis by introducing a mini set of five of their iconic lipstick shades. Like the fragrance set, the lipsticks are also years:

  • 1930: Noir Red
  • 1935: Cherry Red
  • 1946: Red Velvet
  • 1969: Dusty Rose
  • 1970: Chocolate Kiss

Each shade is a replica of an actual lipstick from the year that is its name. I was actually a bit surprised at the variety in the mini set. Because Besame is known for red lipsticks, I didn’t expect to get a dusty rose and a brown-nude shade. Nice. Right off the bat, I know that 1969, the Dusty Rose that my friend Renu from Cosmetopiadigest will want to add to her collection of Dusty Rose lippies, will be one that I too will wear often, most likely everyday.

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, they come in cute mini-versions of Besame’s full size red flower-decorated golden bullet lipstick case and the mini fragrances in the photo below.

The mini lipsticks are quite small, definitely deluxe sample size at 1.75″, but I know they’ll last me long enough to know which shades I’ll want to purchase in full size. Actually, because they’re so tiny, they’re terrific to pop into an evening bag or to slip into a pocket if you’re without a purse.

The lipsticks are lightweight, somewhat hydrating, and very comfortable to wear because they contain hydrating ingredients. They have a semi-matte finish. They are full coverage on my lips with one swipe (although the swatches probably could have used two swipes, but I hated to waste the lipstick!). They’re also blunt shaped on both sides making them quite easy to apply. I was also pleasantly surprised that they are as long-lasting as they are (I’ve gotten about 5 hours even with drinking water and munching on a couple of fun size Snickers) since they’re not positioned as long-wearing lipsticks.

Here’s how Besame describes the lipsticks:

“A semi-matte finish with one coat full coverage. The highest natural pigment content for a smooth, indelible, feather-proof finish. Enriched with squalene, vitamin C and aloe. Our vintage reproduction reds are the exact shades used by your favorite Hollywood starlets.”

Let’s take a look at the swatches:

I think my favorites, or the ones I’ll wear most often, are 1969, 1970 and 1946. Here’s me wearing 1946:

The Besame Mini Lipstick Set is priced at $25. It’s currently out of stock on the Besame website, but I believe it is still available at Sephora. Full size versions of the lipsticks are $22. I’m thinking about scoring a full size or two during the upcoming Sephora sale. Besame is cruelty-free and parabens-free.

So, what do you think about this cute little set? Could it be something you’d pick up during the Sephora VIB sale? Which shades are your faves?

  1. I’ve seen this brand mentioned by a couple of bloggers before but it’s almost unheard of. I know their lipsticks are pretty good and I love that these are sample sizes so we can try and make up our mind on which to purchase full size. But let’s be honest, how many of us actually finish a full size lipstick before? I know I haven’t. LOL!

    1. You’re not going to believe it, Shireen, but before I became a beauty blogger, I actually did finish up my one or two tubes of lipstick before I replaced it with the exact same one, lol. I remember being heartbroken to discover my beloved lipstick shade had been discontinued. For most of my life, I had one or maybe two tubes of lipstick (always coral and maybe a red), one mascara, one blush, one pot of grey cream eyeshadow or one shadow trio or quad and maybe one bottle of foundation because I didn’t really wear foundation. Bizarre transformation, right? Anyway, I really love Besame. When I was in college when no makeup makeup was in vogue, I used to wear bright red 1940s style lipstick and vintage 40s clothes. Besame is me! I love the lipsticks. I find them just hydrating enough and just long lasting enough. I think this set is great! But you are absolutely right that now, at this stage of my life, these minis are the perfect size, and I actually do have a shot at finishing several of them up 😉

  2. I was anxiously awaiting your review and swatches, and while I have known about Besame for many years I still haven’t tried any of their beautiful lipsticks. 1930 and 1969 are shades that I would wear a lot this time of year! 1946 is stunning on you! I may need to pick these up during the Sephora sale!

    1. Thank you, Helen. Besame really is a terrific brand, but then I’m a lover of all things vintage. The lipsticks are so pleasant to wear. I love the idea of wearing a lipstick that was popular long ago 🙂

  3. What an adorable set! I love the colors and the packaging is just so chic and glamorous!

    1. Lipstick is what they’re primarily known for though their retro cake mascara is quite well known and oh yes, the violet powder!

  5. Those tiny lippies are so cute! I need 1969. That is a pretty, pretty pink.

    1. I love 1969 too. I know it would look great on you. Maybe it’s something to add to your Sephora VIB event list?

  6. What a great set even if the lipsticks are small. I never use up a lipstick so I don’t mind small. I wish Besame wasn’t fragranced because they do such a lovely job.

    1. I think because these are babies, I didn’t notice the scent at all so I didn’t even think to mention it in the review. I just went back and sniffed two of them. They have the faintest chocolatey scent, but I really had to smell hard. I have to find my full size one, and smell that one and I’ll bet the scent is much more obvious. Too bad about the scent coz I think you’d like 1969.

  7. I love the old world packaging of Besame but I never seem to reach for them.

    1. I have one Besame full size red, but it wasn’t quite the right shade for me. I feel totally different about these cuties. 1969 is so darn wearable and I love to pop in into my jeans pocket so I’m using it all the time, whereas I don’t wear red all the time. I need to see if Besame has a real peach or coral.

  8. These are so pretty

  9. Yes it’s old glamour that makes me like it. The shape of the full lipstick is kind of odd, it just doesn’t apply nicely on my lips but other than that it has great pigmentation

    1. Interestingly, the characteristic Besame lipstick shape works soooooooo much better with these baby lipsticks than with the full size.
