Bliss History

I was first introduced to Bliss when I stayed at W Hotels when traveling on business in the late 1990s and beyond. Bliss was a spa brand, and it was the brand that was used in the spas in the W Hotels and maybe in the Westin Hotels, too. Since the Bliss brand was started in Soho in New York in 1996 as a modern, self-care spa brand, I’m pretty sure I remember seeing signs for Bliss as the brand being used in the new day spas that were springing up in the city back then.

The amenities I remembered in my hotel bathroom were Bliss lemon shampoo and conditioner, Lemon & Sage body butter, and Bliss exfoliating cleanser. There may have been other items, but these are the ones that stood out to me.

I liked them so much that I started buying Bliss products for use at home. One that I bought most often was the Bliss Exfoliating Facial Cleanser. The cleanser had little exfoliating beads that I discovered were not biodegradable. So I stopped using it. I also bought the lemon shampoo, and I learned that it had sulfates that were helping my hair color fade faster. I ended up taking a break from Bliss products for several years.

Bliss Today

Since then, Bliss as a company and brand has transformed itself to keep up with the times. Today, it is a B corporation, a private certification earned by some “for profit” companies based on their performance in terms of social and environmental performance. The certification is primarily used as a marketing and branding tool to let consumers know that a certain company has been shown to adhere to specific environmental standards.

Now, Bliss is a cruelty-free, “clean beauty” brand with products that come in recyclable containers! I can use Bliss products now with confidence.

What also surprised me about the new Bliss is that it went from being a luxury brand to being more affordably priced and readily available in mainstream stores. Bliss is now sold at CVS, Walgreens, Target, Ulta, and Amazon instead of high-end spas. Yay!

Bliss Drench & Quench Moisturizer

One of the blogging organizations that I belong it send me an invitation to apply to participate in an unpaid review program for Bliss. I decided to apply since the project did not require jumping through hoops to participate. All that was required as writing a review that the company could use on their website, I believe.

I received Bliss Drench & Quench Cream-to-Water Hydrator for All-Day Moisture with Hyaluronic Acids to try out. I thought that it was a new product, but checking it out on their website, it appears to have been introduced in 2019.

Not everyone can use skincare products with hyaluronic acid, but I can, so I was happy to try this moisturizer.

Opening the jar, I could see that it was a fluffy-looking white gel-cream. Applying it, I was surprised at how almost impossibly lightweight it is. It turns to liquid, almost water, on contact with my skin and is instantly absorbed. It isn’t greasy or oily at all, and it leaves behind a velvety smooth skin feel. “Drench & Quench” is the perfect name for it.

Bliss Drench & Quench Moisturizer reminds me a lot of makeup artist Sonia Rosselli’s Water Balm Skin Prep (mentioned here) that many MUAs swear by as the perfect moisturizing base for applying foundation.

Cruelty-free, vegan Bliss Drench & Quench Cream-to-Water Moisturizer has the following benefits, according to the Bliss website:

  • 4 types of hyaluronic acid (including low molecular weight HA that can penetrate skin layers) deliver intense, yet weightless hydration
  • Increases moisture levels by in minutes
  • Disappears into your complexion with no heavy after-feel
  • after 4 weeks improves skin’s moisture barrier

Key ingredients include:

  • Purified Micro Algae contains natural antioxidants that improves skin hydration and reduces water loss
  • Hydrozome makes the formula actually feel as if it transforms from cream to water as it locks in hydration
  • Vitamin C is known to visibly brighten and firm skin for a radiant appearance
  • Milk Thistle & Passion Fruit Seed Oils help soothe and restore while protecting from free radicals
  • German Chamomile is a gentle flower known to quiet and calm skin

Although it is supposed to provide “all day moisture”, if my skin feels dry in my dry heated house during the day, I can reapply it right over my foundation.

Bliss Drench & Quench Moisturizer has a light, fresh scent described on the website as “refreshing aquatic”. If I sniff the jar, I can smell the fragrance, but I don’t smell it at all on my skin.

I am surprised at how much I really like this moisturizer. I wear it during the day in conjunction with a separate sunscreen. I think that Bliss Drench & Quench ultra-lightweight formula will be even more appealing during the summer.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua) (Eau), Cyclopentasiloxane, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Dimethicone, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer, Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate, Passiflora Incarnata Seed Oil, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Silybum Marianum Seed Oil, Tocopherol, Porphyra Umbilicalis Extract, Commiphora Mukul Resin Extract, Rosa Multiflora Fruit Extract, Saccharina Longicruris Extract, Dimethicone/PEG-10/15 Crosspolymer, Sodium Chloride, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Potassium Sorbate, Dipropylene Glycol, Fragrance (Parfum), Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Polysorbate 20, Phenoxyethanol, Pentylene Glycol, Sodium Citrate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Benzoate, Linalool, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Limonene, Benzyl Alcohol, Blue 1 (CI 42090)

Bliss Drench & Quench comes in a 0.5 fl. oz. mini as well as the full size 1.7 oz. jar. The mini is priced at $5.99 and it’s a good way to try this lightweight moisturizer to determine if it’s right for you.

The price of full size jar varies according to where you buy it, though the MSRP appears to be around $24.99 (price at CVS and Walgreens), and $24 at Ulta. It’s $19.99 at Target where it’s coming up today at $16 and change as the Target Deal of the Day. I like that I can now use CVS and Ulta coupons to buy Bliss products! If you end up trying it at some point, let me know what you think!

  1. I absolutely love this type of formula, and should add this one to my list to try (that is, when I actually need another moisturizer!). Thank you for your review, Allison! I am so glad that you liked it!

    1. Bliss Drench & Quench would be perfect for LA in the summer, but I know what you mean about “needing another moisturizer”!!

  2. I love the sound of this. I think it’s so unique. What I really like though is that you can buy a sample size since I have trouble with fragrance. It would give me the chance to see how I could tolerate it.
