Boston Lights, An Outdoor Lantern Experience at Franklin Park Zoo

Here’s something a little different to start the week.

On Thursday night, Jeff and I went to the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston to take in the fantastic lantern exhibition that is sponsored by National Grid, one of the local electric companies. More than 50 plant and animal lantern arrangements, some of them animated, light up the night sky using different types of LED lights. It was a brilliant sight! In fact, as we drove to the park, we could see some of the arrangements from the road. The exhibition completely exceeded my expectations!

The exhibition had a Chinese theme featuring Chinese lanterns,

pagodas and plants and animals in habitats known to China on land, in the air and under water.

Sadly, there was no information on who designed and fabricated the amazing displays. The signs accompanying each arrangement focus on biodiversity as well as saving endangered species such as snow leopards and pangolins.

There was also a display on the Chinese signs of the zodiac based on your birth year. I am a rabbit, so maybe that’s why the resident rabbit in my yard has hung around for so long!

The arrangements took up a loop of about 1.5 miles throughout the zoo. It took Jeff and me almost an hour to walk through the first time because we took so many photos, and we were in awe of what we saw.

We went through a second time without taking pictures so we could really concentrate on what we were seeing.

There were speakers throughout the exhibition playing Chinese-style music to accompany the tableaux.

I know I took more than 50 photos and videos, but I will select a few photos to share with you.

Boston Lights goes until November 15, and it is sold out. Nevertheless, I think it will be brought back in 2021, so if you’re in the Boston area, stay tuned or sign up for an email from the Franklin Park Zoo about when it will return. I also hope that the exhibition travels to other locations this year or next so that more people will get a chance to see it.
