Bright Eyes with Kat Von D White Cake Pencil Eyeliner

Maybe 15 years ago, something really stood out one day about my former next door neighbor who was very glam. She always wore quite a lot of makeup for our conservative neighborhood, but on this particular day, something about her eyes stood out even more than usual. I asked her what was different. She told me she was wearing white eyeliner. At the time, I wasn’t as into makeup as I am these days, so it was the first time I had heard about white eyeliner.

Since then, white eyeliner has been in and out of style. But it seems to be having a moment again, and I’m glad about that. Used judiciously, white eyeliner can make your eyes pop or just look more awake, especially good for days when you need a pick-me-up. Or it can be used dramatically to help you stand out.

When I was offered the opportunity to try Kat Von D’s Cake Pencil Eyeliner, I was eager to try it. KVD’s liquid black Tattoo Liner with the ultra fine tip is still my favorite.

I was curious about why it is called “Cake Liner”. I came across an article on Cosmopolitan.com

How to Wear White Eyeliner, and the 8 Best White Eyeliners to Try

where the KVD Cake Pencil Liner was included as one of the best white eyeliners. The article said that Cake Liner refers to the old school liners that came in a “cake” (pressed) that was used with water and a brush. Thankfully, KVD Cake Liner has the highly pigmented, matte color payoff of the old cake liners but without the hassle or mess. With this Cake Liner, you just take off the cap and draw it on. Easy peasy.

More specifically, the KVD white Cake Pencil Liner is a twist up creamy eye pencil. It goes on very smoothly and easily. And it stays put. I tried running my finger through the swatch I made on my arm, and it doesn’t smudge at all. Also it’s waterproof. I tried removing the swatch on my arm with water, and no go.

I’ve been wearing it off and on during the past few weeks, and it wears very well for me even on the lower waterline. I applied it about 5 hours ago on the lower lashliene, and it’s still going strong.

Typically, I wear white eyeliner either along the upper lash line or on the lower waterline, not usually both at once. But today I decided to live dangerously, and I’m wearing it in both spots. I think it looks fine. In fact, I think I look quite perky!

Sometimes I think that white eyeliner can be a little too bright. I think it looks most wearable with light eyeshadow shades for those of us who don’t want to stand out too much. Or smudge the white line a bit, and it still adds brightness but doesn’t shout as loudly.

The Cosmopolitan.com article shows a variety of ways to wear white eyeliner. Many are more daring than I could get away with, but I think they look fun and glamorous. A long wing in white makes quite a statement. Others wear white liner above the crease for a very modern and graphic look. Check it out!

Kat Von D Cake Pencil Liner is vegan and cruelty-free. It’s sold at Sephora and is priced at $19. If white isn’t your thing, it comes in rich chocolate brown and ultra black.

So do you ever wear white eyeliner? Would you consider it?

    1. Thank you!

  4. The formula looks really nice! I used to wear white liner all the time, but seem to have strayed from it – but I think I need a new pencil as my old one is really hard.

    1. Kristi, my old white pencil was also rather hard so I didn’t use it very often. This KVD Cake Pencil is a game-changer – so creamy, easy to apply but stays put. It’s amazing

  5. I prefer flesh colored liners to brighten my eyes.

    1. I mostly use a flesh tone (can we still use that term?) pencil, too, but sometimes I do like the brightness of white. I find that smudging it a bit makes it more wearable for me at this stage of life.

  6. White eyeliners hate me. I look like an alien wearing one. Buti do like the quality of KVD eyeliners

    1. LOL, I know what you mean. White isn’t for everyone. But I was impressed with how fabulous some of the models with medium or deeper skin tone looked wearing white liner – however, they were wearing a “fashion” look.

  7. I love white eyeliner, it looks very mod! Although personally I only wwear it on the bottom waterline or in the inner corner to make the eyes look brighter. I love how pigmented this one is!

    1. KVD eyeliners never disappoint!

  8. I think white liner can look awesome for graphic looks as well. I’m not a KVD fan though.

  9. I’ve always used nude in the waterline, but have started using white lately as well. I always though it would be too harsh a contrast, but it does work nicely to brighten. I have one of these liners in black and love the formula, but I have a hard time supporting KVD as a brand anymore.

  10. I’ve only wore white on my waterline but my eyes have been sensitive in the past 10 years and I can’t wear much on my waterline anymore. I haven’t tried her line so maybe it would work for me!
