Briogeo Be Gentle Be Kind Shampoo

Don’t you just hate it when one of your favorite products gets dropped? Well, I do. And it seems to happen all the time. Boo!

My favorite shampoo for color-treated hair was Sebastian Color Ignite Single Tone. It disappeared from store shelves about a year and a half ago. I had an extra bottle that I bought at Marshall’s waiting in the closet, but I used that up a year ago. I was told that Sebastian was reformulating the single tone product to be relaunched in 2013. Well, I guess that wasn’t the right story because it’s 2014 and I still haven’t seen it. Neither the folks at Vidal Sassoon salon nor at Ulta know what’s happening either.

So I have been on the hunt for a replacement. I’ve tried some other decent brands but no love like I had with Sebastian.

I read about Briogeo Be Gentle Be Kind Cleansing Shampoo on Myhighestself.com, a fellow blogger’s website, and her review made me very curious. The shampoo is:

  • sulfate-free
  • has no parabens or silicones
  • contains lots of nourishing herbs and plant-based oils
  • is not tested on animals
  • is made from 96% naturally derived ingredients
  • made in the U.S.

I decided to give it a try.

Because my hair is color-treated, I wash it every 3 days on average. So I need a shampoo that really cleans well. And this one does! It makes a lot of lather, which I like, and it rinses clean. I know this is super old-school, but it even gives me that squeaky clean feeling before I apply my conditioner or hair treatment. I’m amazed at how much I love this shampoo!

The scent is hard to describe: grapefruit meets floral? Whatever the fragrance is, it’s fine.

Here’s Briogeo’s video about how to use the product. I didn’t think I needed to watch a video on how to shampoo but there was some surprisingly interesting info in the video.

The only downside to this shampoo is that it is a little pricey, $19 for 8.5 fl.oz./250 ml, and it is not available locally in stores. I had to buy it online, and it’s not on Amazon. When I bought it, hairenvy.com had free shipping, so that sealed the deal. It’s also sold on briogeo.com, naturallcurly.com, lock&mane.com etc.

Instead of a photo of my hair since by now most of you know what it looks like, I thought I’d share a painting by my friend, Andrew Stevovich, a talented artist whose work I collect and who I think is a keen observer of contemporary culture. “Marie” must have used Briogeo on her lovely dark locks 😉

Thanks for the tip! I needed a replacement for the “Sleek and Shine” shampoo I’ve been using for a couple years. One thing I’ve noticed about some of the sulfate-free shampoos is that, while great for preserving color, they don’t always remove mineral deposits. We apparently have a lot of copper in our local water, and when I started using the S&S, my hair eventually started to turn a weird shade of coppery-orange. Tried one of those purplish anti-brassy things but no great luck with that. My stylist figured it out, and now, before I go for color, I use a mineral-stripping shampoo from the beauty supply store. I’m hoping with your brand here I won’t have to bother!

    1. Kim, I’ve been using this shampoo for a few weeks, but I’m not sure it will replace using the mineral-stripping shampoo before your color. It’s not designed to do that. Every couple of months, I have a malibu treatment at the salon to strip out both the minerals from the water and the color buildup especially on the older ends of my hair so that the new color will take more evenly. No shampoo has replaced the need for me to do that. 🙁

  2. I am with you with the shampooing situation. I color AND do Keratin now and then for the frizz, and am always switching around shampoos, have had some success with Loreal Sulfate Free and Keratherapy. Since a few days ago, I am testing a new brand that’s also meant to work on hair thats chemically treated. I’d definitely give this a try too.

    1. It is definitely a chore choosing hair products that make chemically-treated hair better, not worse. So far, so good for me with this brand 🙂

  3. This sounds great! I used to love one of Sebastian´s volumizing shampoo, but it also disapeared couple of years ago.

  6. Oooh. This sounds right up my alley. I only wash my hair 3 times a week b/c it’s color treated as well. I have been looking for a sulfate free shampoo that lathers well. The price is a bit steep, but I’d be willing to give it a try at least once! Thanks for the review!

  29. Kim says:

I bought some from hairenvy.com and tried it for the first time today–and I loved it! Time will tell, but this is actually a little less expensive than the stuff I was using before, so I’m a happy camper. Thx for reviewing it 🙂

    1. Oh wow! I’m happy that you like it so far, Kim. I still love it. In fact, if you do like it enough to repurchase in the future, hopefully you’ll buy it through Briogeo’s new affiliate program that I am joining and hopefully will be on my blog when they get it up and running in the next couple of weeks!
