Change Is Good: My New Oral B Advanced Clean Electric Toothbrush

After owning several Sonicare electric toothbrushes over the past 25 years (I’m estimating), I began to have issues with my current Sonicare that became more than just annoying. For the past year or so, the bristles on the Sonicare brush heads were getting bent out of shape after just a couple of weeks.  In addition, my teeth didn’t feel very clean, especially my lower front teeth that never felt clean at all. I found that I had to replace the Sonicare brush head every month in order for my teeth to feel at least somewhat clean. Sonicare says the brush should last up to 90 days, but I was getting nowhere near that. Also, one of my key complaints was that the brush head was just too big for my small mouth.

A month ago, while shopping at Costco, I noticed an excellent deal on the Oral B Advanced Clean Electric Toothbrush. I hadn’t been thinking about buying a new electric toothbrush, but the price was too good to pass up, especially in light of my recent disappointment with my Sonicare brush.

The Oral B Advanced Clean Power Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush set came with:

  • 2 handles
  • 3 brush heads
  • 2 travel cases
  • 2 charging stations
  • 2 brushing modes
  • built-in timer
  • pressure sensor.

The regular price for the Advanced Clean Set at Costco is $99. I can’t remember exactly what I paid for the set, but I’m pretty sure it was $35 off. I think I paid in the vicinity of $65 for the set.

Here are my initial thoughts on the Oral B Advanced Clean. First, the size of the round brush head is much more appropriate for the size of my mouth. Frankly, that is one of the best things about the Oral B for me. It fits!

Before I bought it, I wasn’t sure how the round Oral B brush head worked. It turns out that it oscillates, rotates and vibrates, whereas the Sonicare vibrates. Perhaps because of the smaller round shape and the oscillation, I have found that it is much better at cleaning between my teeth than the Sonicare. For instance, if I have food or even seeds stuck between my close-together teeth, the Oral B gets it out. Plus, it leaves my mouth and teeth feeling amazingly clean!

the red pressure sensors that light up on the Oral B Advanced Clean brush handle if too much pressure is exerted

Another plus for me is the pressure sensor. When I used the Sonicare, I was pressing the brush so hard against my teeth in an attempt at getting my teeth cleaner that the bristles bent very quickly. The Oral B has a warning light that lights up red if I am pressing too hard.

The Oral B Advanced Clean model has 2 brushing modes that I would label: regular and sensitive. I use regular on my teeth and sensitive on my gums. They have several models with 5 or 6 modes, but to be honest, I don’t feel that I need that degree of complexity. They also have a couple of models with a single mode if you don’t want to have to decide at all. 😉

I also like the Oral B timer. It gives you an alert every 30 seconds so you can spend 30 seconds on each quadrant of your mouth. The only nitpick for me is that I wish the brush would shut off after 2 minutes because sometimes I forget how long it has been on.

I haven’t used the travel case yet, but it seems fine.

The charging station is even smaller than my Sonicare charger. The instructions say that the charge should last for 2 weeks. I have had my Oral B for more than a month now, and I did have to charge it after about 2 1/2 weeks. Since then, it hasn’t needed a charge yet. The instructions also say that you can leave the toothbrush on the charger, if you like, and it won’t damage the battery or make the charge less long lasting.

Like the bristles on the Sonicare, the blue color on the Oral B bristles fades over time as an indicator of when it’s time to replace the brush head. I can see the difference in color between the brush head that I’ve been using for 5-6 weeks on the left versus the unused brush head on the right that’s waiting in the wings.

The only thing that bugs me about the Oral B Advanced Clean electric toothbrush is the power button. Maybe it’s just me, but I have a somewhat difficult time finding the button to shut it off while I’m using it. I wish it protruded just a bit more so I could feel it more easily when it’s in my mouth. But believe me, it’s no big deal.

Oral B Advanced Clean Electric Toothbrush

So after about a month and a half of owning my Oral B Advanced Clean electric toothbrush, I am very satisfied. For me, switching brands turned out to be a wise move.

Do you use an electric toothbrush? If so, do you have a preferred brand?

I just bought the new Panasonic. It’s so nice. It has 3 brush settings and 3 cleaning settings. 1 clean, 2 whitening, 3 gum health. I love it. It detects if your brushing to hard. I got 5 brush heads and a travel case. Gotta take care of our teeth. 😁🙋🏻‍♀️❤️🍷

    1. It definitely was an amazing value for the Oral B at Costco, and that definitely got me to buy it since there was nothing wrong with my Sonicare other than the issues that I mentioned. Yes, Braun appliances are such high quality that it helped seal the deal!

  3. Overall, it sounds like a better brush than the Sonicare! I dislike when the brush heads are too big also. I’ve been thinking about getting an electric toothbrush and I will keep this one in mind!

  5. This is what we’ve used for at least 2 decades. It was recommended by our dentist and hygenist. I need that small brush to really get my teeth cleaned. Costco often has specials on this plus specials on the replacement heads.

    1. I’m glad to hear that your dentist and hygienist recommended the Oral B, Marcia. I never asked my dentist, but I have heard his hygienist suggesting the Sonicare so I never discussed it with them. I am so glad I switched. And I’m glad that Costco has deals on the brush heads because this kit only came with 3 brush heads. I will keep my eyes open for them.
