China Glaze TTYL Holo Nail Polish and Morgan Taylor React Base Coat

I found two nail polishes that I am smitten with in less than two weeks. That never happens. But how nice that it happened now, at the end of summer, when my nails are at their healthiest.

I introduced you to the beautiful coral, Parasol from Adesse New York that I received in my Ipsy bag last week.

The second shade that I’m taken by I bought at Ulta after seeing this lovely shade on several bloggers websites; China Glaze TTYL that is part of the OMG! Flashback Collection, a collection from 2008 that’s being brought back as a limited edition.

I don’t have many China Glaze polishes (a cruelty-free brand with built-in nail hardeners), but one that comes to mind is a silver glitter that I love and wear a lot during the holidays.

TTYL (“talk to you later” for those who might not be up on acronyms) appealed to me, when I saw the swatches online, because it looked like a pretty peachy shade. To be honest, I looked at the swatches but didn’t really read a lot about it. When I got the bottle I ordered on ulta.com, I was surprised that it looked like a mauve shimmer in the bottle. OK,  I thought, I like mauves. I decided to wear it for Jeff’s birthday dinner. I applied it while I was sitting on my deck under my big umbrella to shield me from the sun.

I started out by applying a coat of Morgan Taylor React No-Light Extended Wear Base Coat that I also ordered from Ulta because it sounded like a very good base coat.

Although Morgan Taylor React comes in an opaque white bottle, the base coat thankfully is clear (I have a white base coat from another brand, and I hate it). The translucent brush is on the small side but easy to use.

I applied one coat of React, and it dried very quickly.

Next I opened the bottle of TTYL, and I applied a first coat. The brush is also small and slim, and it’s similar to the Morgan Taylor brush in terms of size.

The polish itself was kind of strange at first. I determined that applying thin coats is the best way to go. A thin coat applied nicely. A thick coat seemed to streak. Two coats provided full coverage. It dried quite quickly. I followed up with a coat of Zoya Amor Topcoat.

The shade appeared to be a lovely mauve shimmer.

But I bent down to reach something outside the umbrella on my deck, and as I caught a glimpse of my nails in full sun, I was so surprised.

It’s a holo! A beautiful holographic polish that looks peachy, reddish and mauve. I truly love this shade. I think it’s perfect for my skin tone, but I think it would be flattering on many skin tones.

I was in a rush when I was doing my nails because we thought we needed to leave early to get to Boston on time. So I didn’t let my nails dry for as long as I usually do. As a result, they may not have been completely dry before I got into the shower to wash my hair. After I got out, the polish on my left middle finger receded a bit at the tip. How did it wear going forward? Two days later, I have a chip on my left index finger and on my right ring finger. But I spent an hour and a half weeding my garden, and then I washed dishes without gloves. So I can’t really tell if the Morgan Taylor React Base Coat is any better than the Seche Clear Base Coat I had been using for the past year or so. I can’t tell if China Glaze TTYL chips easily or whether it didn’t stand up to an unfair torture test. I’ll try both again, and I guess I’ll see how they do over time.

Regardless, I strongly recommend China Glaze TTYL from the OMG! Flashback Collection if you like holos, and you tend toward neutral shades. This one is a beauty!

Pretty! I remember when OMG came out the first time. I like other formulas a lot more than China Glaze (I know other people love it, but it just never has been the longest-wearing polish on me) but I do love some holographic nails. 😀

    1. You’re right, Rach, it’s not the longest wearing. True that I’ve been gardening and washing dishes, but more of it chipped off today, day 3, so I removed it. But the shade is so beautiful, I’m going to put it back on, lol!

Go for it! If it still chips maybe you can get longer wear with a different base/top combo, too. Maybe try a sticky base like Orly Bonder or CND Stickey? I used to keep a notebook with that kind of info- when I got a new bottle of anything (base, colour, or top) I’d log it for a while with what I used together, and what did and didn’t work out for me as far as shrinkage and longevity. Word to the wise, do not use the aforementioned sticky bases with expensive bottles of Dior. Those were the WORST wear-times EVER. Yet Dior will go about 10 days for me with a traditional base. Who knew.
I should have been a nail polish tester. 😛

        1. You are too smart, Rach! I don’t own a sticky base, but I need to get one anyway for a marble mani I was thinking of trying. But I don’t think I’m as organized as you, lol, with your chart 😉

  5. Wow so pretty! I need to do my nails asap!

    1. I love this shade, Marcia. It didn’t wear that well for me because I’ve been weeding and mowing the lawn and washing pots and pans with no gloves. But I took it off, and put it back on again because I just love this shade. It’s mauvey and peachy all in one. I think you’ll like it!
