Snarky Comment ? and So Long August Beauty Spotlight Team Weekly Roundup

Before I post our Beauty Spotlight Team weekly roundup, I’m curious about your response to a comment on my Pix from My Vacay at Oak Island NC. A woman whose family is fortunate enough to have inherited property there wrote to complain about the growth of tourism on Oak Island. She felt that because I wrote about my vacation on my blog I was contributing to the ruination of her vacation place and the town where some people live year round.

I was offended by her rant at me because you can’t blame tourists from taking advantage of vacation opportunities. Where I live in the gorgeous area of Cape Ann and the North Shore of Massachusetts, we also deal with issues of tourism vs. quality of life and means of making a living for the locals. There’s no easy answer.

It seemed like she was accusing me of spreading the word about Oak Island as a vacation destination. Heck, if I’m going to encourage vacationing, I would probably recommend that you come to Cape Ann in MA!

Since I felt the need to reply, I recommended that she run for office, or lobby the town for a change in zoning laws, or most importantly, come up with other ways for the locals to make a living other than by encouraging tourism (I assume that local folks may earn some money by renting their property, or by opening restaurants and shops. I’m sure I’ll hear back from her.

Just curious, do you think it is OK that I wrote about my vacation on my blog? I don’t have a travel blog, but I like to give readers something else to read about besides cosmetics everyday. Jeff and I are going to London and Dublin for a few days this fall. Can I write about our travels, or should that be verboten? I know the answer for me, but wondered what you think. Thank you.

Now, enjoy this week’s Beauty Spotlight Team roundup!

  1. You’re right that there’s no easy answer nor is there one right answer. I live in Woodstock and the shopkeepers, restaurants, inns & B&B’s depend on tourism to make a living while the local residents hate the congestion, traffic and crowds. As a yearlong resident I feel really lucky to live here rather than just visit for a short stay like the tourists. So I don’t go into town on weekends and I only go to restaurants on weekdays during the heavy tourist season.

I loved learning about your trip. 99% of your readers won’t have the opportunity to visit other than through your eyes. She should be proud that her area is so well thought of. You know there are so who will complain about everything. I’m sorry she took it out on you.

  3. gloria patterson says:

What a load of crap she tried to throw at you. You have a right to talk or write about any location you want. Sounded like to me you really enjoy your time there and was telling us about it.

Maybe “KAREN” has reached the point in her bitches that no one in the area there will listen to her. So she spotted a chance to bitch at you…………….

  4. Cynthia says:

Of course you should write about your vacation if you want! How ridiculous to accuse you of promoting tourism in her area because you wrote about your vacation there! I love reading about other people’s holidays, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to those places.
There. I vented. I feel better. I hope you do, too, Allison.

  5. Paula says:

While I understand how annoying it can be when there are tourists all over a place you consider “yours,” the commenter needs to check her privilege. She was lucky enough to have inherited a place. In addition, most people who live in a prime vacation spot year round depend upon the tourism to live.

  6. Gabrielle says:

Okay, I had not read that comment, but now I have and… yikes! Very unnecessary and unkind. Also, this is YOUR blog. You get to write about anything you like. I, as you already know, very much enjoyed reading about your vacation. I like the opportunities you give us to get to know about you, the human being, not just you, the person who wears makeup. Please don’t let someone like that spoil things for you and your readers.

  7. Allison, I think that person with the snarky comment was way off base. If you live in a desirable and beautiful place, there are going to be tourists and long term visitors. I’ve had a house on Martha’s Vineyard and now live in Santa Fe, NM. Both are big tourist attractions, and the beauty and treasures within are what draw us to live in these areas. Yes, there are traffic problems, crowding, lots of inconveniences, but that’s always going to be the way it is. Bad tempered people are always looking for a venue for complaining or “whinging” as the English call it – great word. Nancy Cetlin

    1. “Whinging” is definitely the right word, Nancy! And you’re right about living in areas that always have been or have become tourist areas – you deal with it! So wonderful to hear from you. Thank you for taking the time to comment. Hope all is well, and you are enjoying life in Santa Fe!!
