Could This Be the Perfect BB Cream? Derma E Tinted Moisturizing BB Cream SPF 30

Last week in one of the Facebook makeup groups I joined, everyone was buzzing about the new Derma E Essentials Tinted Moisturizing BB Cream SPF 30. I might have missed the beginning of the thread because what everyone was discussing was the shades and who they would suit. Since I had the complete set of 5 shades, I decided to hurry my review and swatches.

When I first opened the package, my eye landed on the “Tinted Moisturizing” part of the product name, so in my haste, I read it as “tinted moisturizer”. Sometimes tinted moisturizers don’t provide quite enough coverage for me, so I was approaching the new products with a bit of skepticism. But when I applied it – even for the first time, I noticed that this product is something different!

I finally noticed that this is a BB cream, not tinted moisturizer. I haven’t used a BB in a while. But this one seems incredibly different. I might even go so far as to say that this is the best one I’ve ever tried. I absolutely adore the consistency of this BB cream. So many that I have tried over the years are heavy. This one is as light as air on my skin, and it makes my skin feel velvety though it dries matte in an instant. I love that! Frankly, wearing Derma E Tinted Moisturizing BB Cream SPF 30 feels like I’m wearing nothing. I forget I have it on.

So I wear Derma E Tinted Moisturizing BB Cream SPF 30 in different ways. If I’m at home or just running errands, I wear it alone as intended. If my very dry mature skin is feeling extra dry or if I’m going to an appointment or meeting, I sometimes apply Derma E Tinted Moisturizing BB over moisturizer or a hydrating serum for extra hydration and more plumping. But I am sure if you have younger or less dry skin, you would be happy wearing it on its own as intended.

Since it’s a BB cream, it primes, moisturizes and provides some color with light to medium coverage. It’s somewhat buildable, but I dab some concealer on my two most noticeable dark spots as I do with most foundations including full coverage foundations.

Derma E Tinted Moisturizing BB Cream contains Bilberry extract as well as Vitamins C and E so it helps brighten and illuminate. I was unfamiliar with Bilbery so I looked it up: “anthocyanosides, plant pigments with excellent antioxidant properties that help to prevent or reverse damage to cells caused by free radicals. … Bilberry also contains vitamin C, which is another antioxidant.” Ah, so it’s an antioxidant and source of vitamin C!

The SPF 30 is derived from mineral non-nano zinc oxide 20%, and there is no white cast. It is “reef safe”. Check out the rest of the ingredients at the end of the post. Derma E is a brand that uses a lot of naturally-derived ingredients.

Now for the shades. The five shades are:

  • Fair
  • Light
  • Medium
  • Tan
  • Deep.

My skin tone is between Fair and Light, with Fair being the closer shade. Here’s a blob of Fair and how it looks blended.

Sometimes I blend some Light into the Fair to deepen it a bit (this is the blend below)

but Fair doesn’t look overly light on my skin. So that said, if you are a pale person, it’s possible that Fair will not be light enough for your skin tone. Derma E could stand to add one even fairer shade to the lineup.

Take a look at the swatches. Here they are, first in natural daylight and second, in direct sunlight.

And thank you also to Derma E for sending along a very useful purple blending sponge that helps make application a breeze. I’ll use the handy cotton pouch for bringing the BB cream with SPF with me to the beach.

I am a big fan of Derma E Tinted Moisturizing BB Cream SPF 30 as you probably can tell! But my one nitpick is that I wish the hole in the plastic tube were smaller. I have to remember to hold the tube upright when I squeeze some out; otherwise, way too much comes out of the tube. With this BB cream, a little goes a long way!

Derma E Tinted Moisturizing BB Cream SPF 30 is priced at $19.95 for 1.5 fl. oz./44 ml and is sold on the Derma E website, and the two most popular shades, Light and Tan, are sold at Lovelyskin.com. Although Derma E is sold at Ulta, I don’t see this particular product at Ulta.com yet. Keep your eyes peeled! It’s cruelty-free, gluten-free, vegan, GMO-free, soy free, and the packaging is recyclable.

    1. Marcia, I didn’t notice any scent. I just went back and tried to smell the tube, and I couldn’t smell anything. The materials I received don’t mention a scent, nor does the website. But usually if there’s a noticeable scent, I can smell it, and I don’t smell anything. As I mentioned, when I wear this out of the house, I apply it over moisturizer or a hydrating serum because I need more hydration than a BB or CC cream can give on its own.

  7. I usually steer clear of BB creams because they don’t have enough coverage but this sounds wonderful and the price is right too.

    1. I know what you mean. I really like the Derma E Tinted BB Cream w mineral SPF 30 for everyday wear. I plan to wear this to the beach on weekends too. I have to dab some concealer on my 2 dark spots, but I often do that even with full coverage foundations.

  8. Fair looks like it’s gonna be too dark for me. Bummer.

Looks like it does pretty well!

  10. I hope they DO bring this to ULTA. or even Target, sheesh. Why wouldnt it be at Target? I want to try this realy bad!

    1. It may very well be at Ulta and Target (and I agree with you, it should be), but when I looked online for it, I didn’t see it there. It may be just the Derma E Tinted BB Cream SPF 30 is still rolling out

  11. I’m curious to test this– I need a bit more coverage than light-medium mot days but I love lighter makeup for summer.

    1. It’s worth testing. I would say it has more coverage than most BB creams, probably more like medium coverage. It covers quite well for me, all except for my two darkest dark spots, yet it feels so lightweight

  12. Great review Allison! I used to love BB Creams but I completely forgot about them in recent years. This one sounds fab – and SPF 30 – perfect for the summer time! Thanks for the recommendation 🙂

    1. I agree, Laura! I used to use BB cream often a few years ago, but lately not so much. Nevertheless, the Derma E BB is perfect for everyday, going to the beach etc. Lightweight but good breathable coverage!
