Deborah Lippmann 99 Luftballons Nail Polish, Gift at Sephora

When I went to Sephora to use my holiday coupon, I thought I was going to redeem my 500 Sephora points for the 500 point gift. But my head was turned by the special “gift with purchase” mini-nail polish from Deborah Lippmann.

99 Luftballons was just sitting there all sparkly and red, and it looked like the perfect holiday polish. When I bought it, I glanced at the name, but truth be told, I didn’t know what it meant and I hadn’t heard of it before. It means “air” (luft in German) balloons. And it references the song by the German band, Nena, “99 Luftballons”, or in the English version, “99 Red Balloons”. It was an anti-nuclear protest song from Nena’s 1983 album. How did I miss that?

Back to the polish. I went to a neighborhood women’s holiday party and Yankee Swap last night, and I thought 99 Luftballons would add some holiday sparkle to my outfit, especially since it has been so dark, dreary, snowy and rainy here over the past few days.

I expected the polish to be a topper with red sparkles on a clear background, and I had planned to use it over a white or red polish. I ran out of time to apply the polish. Instead, I painted on a coat of 99 Luftballons, and I was surprised to discover that it’s a  sheer pink jelly-ish background with multi-sized glitter in red, blue, green, silver, and gold. Love it! I put on a second coat for more intensity. It is so pretty and so festive for any fun occasion! It kinda reminds me of Deborah Lippmann’s Happy Birthday polish.

So if you’re at Sephora any time soon (I’m guessing it’s a limited time promotion) and you have some points to redeem, check out the Deborah Lippmann gift if it’s still in stock! If not, 99 Luftballons is part of the DL lineup at Sephora and at other retailers in the regular size, too. If you’re a glitter girl or if you’re looking for a cute stocking stuffer for someone who is, you’re in luck!

  1. I love glitter nail polish and that is a pretty one. I just do not enjoy trying to remove it. 😉
That song was played nonstop on MTV. I hated it.

    1. Laura, I had a feeling that I would probably hate that song too so I’ve avoided looking for it on YT! Like any glitter, it is harder to remove than regular polish. In fact, I had to remove it quickly on Saturday. I soaked a cotton pad in Zoya polish remover and wrapped it around the nail and willed myself to leave it there for about a minute or so, and then it came off fairly easily but I do wish there was a completely magic trick to getting it off.

    1. I agree, Cindy. On its own, 99 Luftballons looks like spring because of the pink base, but I’m all about pink no matter what time of year. Over red or green, it would look more holidayish
