DHC Astaxanthin Collagen All-in-One Gel

PR Sample, Affiliate Links

As I mentioned before, DHC Skincare, the well-known Japanese skincare brand, was one of my favorite and most often purchased skincare brands before I started blogging and had a chance to try so many different skincare products. Because I’m always switching to try something new, my old faves often go by the wayside.

But at the end of the summer, DHC Skincare sent me a trio of their favorite skincare products, giving me the opportunity to remember why I loved DHC so much. A few weeks ago, I wrote about the iconic DHC Deep Cleansing Oil (here) and before that, new-to-me and wonderful, effective Lip Cream (here). For the past several weeks, I have been using DHC Astaxanthin Collagen All-in-One Gel as my nighttime anti-aging cream.

Key Ingredients and What They Do

I had to laugh when I read what DHC had to say about their Astaxanthin Collagen All-in-One Gel. I’ve been using it as my nighttime anti-aging cream because it doesn’t have sunscreen ingredients in it. If I can help it, I don’t like to use a separate sunscreen along with a moisturizer that doesn’t have any.

However, DHC positions the All-in-One Gel as a daytime brightening moisturizer because astaxanthin is a super, natural antioxidant found in freshwater algae that has been shown to be 6000 times more effective than Vitamin C and 550 times more powerful than Vitamin E in guarding against the deleterious effects of damaging free radicals.  It also reduces UVB-induced inflammation and helps tighten skin. Wow! Hmmm, maybe I will shift to using it during the day over lightweight Paula’s Choice Youth-Extending Skin Protectant SPF 50.

Astaxanthin also reduces fine lines and wrinkles by protecting the collagen network and its production capability. Plus the gel cream contains hydrolyzed collagen (hydrolyzed means the amino acids are broken down via heated water to make the collagen easier to absorb) to help skin feel smooth and supple.

DHC Astaxanthin Collagen All-in-One Gel also contains hyaluronic acid to help strengthen the skin barrier to help skin absorb and hold onto moisture, squalane from olives to function as an emollient as well as an antioxidant, and royal jelly to hydrate and revitalize.

What It’s Like to Use the Product

When I opened the red-orange heavy plastic (recyclable) jar, the first thing I noticed is that the stuff inside is orange (in the photo above, it looks peach but it is really a deeper shade of almost orange! Orange is a rare color for a face cream. Why orange, I wondered? The orange is NOT an added colorant, but the natural color of astaxanthin! According to DHC, the pink pigment is the same ingredient that gives salmon its color. Wow again!

DHC Astaxanthin Collagen All-in-One is a rich gel-cream. DHC’s description of it as “lightweight” initially threw me. Lightweight? I didn’t think so especially when I first tried it at the end of the summer because the gel-cream is thick in the jar. But as I have continued to use it, it actually is lightweight when it’s on my skin because it absorbs quite quickly. Plus I’ve found that a little goes a long way. It feels very protective, and it plumps my skin. And it gives my skin a lovely glow. It’s a terrific all-around anti-aging gel-cream!

In addition to being free of colorants, it is fragrance-free. It can be used by all skin types including sensitive skin.

  1. I haven’t used anything from them in a while, but I really like their products. This sounds like a wonderful cream, but it definitely would require the use of a sunscreen if it is used in the daytime (so I chuckled as did you!). Interesting that the Astaxanthin is responsible for the orange hue!

  2. Yea for fragrance free. I wonder how long it’s been since I first used DHC products. I loved getting the catalogs the small samples from them so I’d know what to try.
