I like to stockpile ideas for crafts to make during those snowy winter days when I don’t feel like leaving the house. Although autumn has just started, I know those wintry days will be here eventually. So I found an idea that I definitely will try in the months to come. Even though I haven’t made it yet myself, I want to share it with you now. That way, I’ll always know where the link is when I have time to try it out.
The instructions are from Beautylish, a wonderful beauty site that’s full of product reviews, makeup looks and tutorials. You can also buy beauty products on the site.
The folks at Beautylish experimented with a lot of DIY lipstick recipes and put together their own “best of the best” instructions for lipstick that can be made at home. I read through the instructions, and I know I can do this. I’ve already got some of the ingredients, and I can get the rest inexpensively:
- non-toxic crayons (They recommend the 64 crayon box of Crayolas, always a good choice.)
- shea butter (I have some I bought online, but it’s usually available at health food stores, Whole Foods or through Amazon)
- some type of oil (They used Argan oil which I think is kinda pricey. But they also suggest olive oil that most of us have. Or coconut oil: a good, affordable alternative that you may already have. I don’t have coconut oil, but I’ve been wanting to buy some ‘coz it’s a healthy, multi-use product to use in cooking or as a skin or hair moisturizer. Costco had organic coconut oil at a very good price last time I was there. Note to self, buy the coconut oil.)
- flavoring (vanilla or almond that I already have and you probably have in your pantry)
- fine glitter (to give the lipstick a little shimmer or dimension. But if you want matte, you might want to skip it).
Although Beautylish says you can use a ladle over a lit candle to melt the crayon and combine the ingredients, I think I’ll make a cheap double-boiler out of a couple of small pots that I’ll buy at the Dollar Store (Just in case, I don’t want to use the double-boiler I use to melt chocolate. I once used my mom’s good pots to make candles when I was a kid. She never forgot that.)
What I especially love about the Beautylish instructions is they provide the recipes for several different lipstick shades that I really like — though you can certainly experiment to develop shades on your own. Although fun to do by yourself when you have some “me time”, this project would be fun to do with your daughter or granddaughter. And it would make a great little gift at holiday time.

Are you going to make some lipstick? I think it would be a great idea to do it and take pictures of the process. How about blue or green or deep purple? Just for fun???????
I am going to make some, probably in a few weeks after I finish my project. Maybe I can get you to come over and make it with me (if it’s before ski season lol)! I will definitely post pix. I agree that some fun colors would be great. And I love the idea of deep purple especially!
