Emjoi Epi Slim+ Compact Epilator

Back in April, I received the Emjoi Epi Slim+ Epilator model e18 to try out. Well, I’ve been using it for 5 months, and it’s about time I reviewed it. I know, I can hear you saying, Oh no, I’m not trying an epilator, lol! But hear me out.

The Emjoi Epi Slim+ Epilator model e18 is a petite (5.5 inch), lightweight, ergonomically-shaped, battery-operated (it takes 2 AA batteries) hair removal device. It’s easy to hold and manipulate. I believe that it was designed for use on the face and smaller areas such as bikini area or underarms, or for touchups on larger areas like the legs. It works via 18 tweezer action discs that remove hair from the root.

As a bit of background, I had been curious about epilators for a while. I saw a segment on HSN or QVC for a large Emjoi Epilator and I almost ordered it, but I chickened out. Truth be told, I was nervous about using it. I thought it would hurt too much. Frankly, I wanted an epilator specifically to use on my face. The fine blonde hair that I have on my cheeks and above my lips really bugged me. And over the past few years, I began to notice some coarser hairs on my chin. Ugh. I used my tweezers to remove the chin hairs, but it was too difficult to use tweezers on fine hairs. When I was offered an opportunity to try the Emjoi Epi Slim+ Epilator, I jumped at the chance.

The Emjoi Epi Slim is very easy to operate. I put in the two small batteries and turned it on. The way to use is to hold the skin taut and move the epilator back and forth or in circles on the area that you want to epilate.

So does it hurt? It pinches like a tweezer pinches. I’d also describe it at first like getting a mild quick shock. But the strange thing is that I get used to it after about 30 seconds and it doesn’t bother me after that, it’s like I don’t feel it anymore. The more often I use it, the less I feel it.

It does a really good job removing most of my facial hair, and it takes a loooooong time to grow back, like more than a month, so I don’t have to use the epilator very often! So then I do have to get used to it again. 🙄  I gotta tell you, this really beats tweezers, and I just cannot do wax.

The only disappointment is using it on my chin hairs. For some strange reason, it doesn’t remove hair on my chin (meaning along the bone, it does fine on any hairs under my lower lip). I tried and tried to make it work and I ended up taking off my skin. Don’t do that, lol!

The Emjoi Epi Slim+ Epilator comes with a little brush to clean the head after use. I definitely can tell it’s working because I can see all the tiny little hairs it removes! I can also remove the head from time to time to clean it and then pop it back in.

If you’ve never tried an epilator before but you’ve been curious about it like me, I  recommend starting with the Emjoi Epi Slim. It’s perfect for the face (except for the chin, lol) and can be used on other areas. It’s affordable, around $35. It’s available on Amazon, at Target, at Walmart, Walgreens, the Emjoi website, and other sites. Be brave. At least think about it!

  1. I never thought of using an epilator. Great review; I now know how this works.

    1. It really is a good way to go. Now I am thinking of trying a bigger one to see if that’ll work better on my chin 😉

  2. This would be perfect for facial hair. I remember when I first laid eyes on an epilator THAT long ago and my mom had one. I tried it one my legs for about half a second lol I could totally handle it now, though… since I think back then I was 8.

    1. Age 8??? OMG, glad you didn’t hurt yourself. This is perfect for removing facial hair everywhere but my chin, for some reason. I really like it!

  3. I’ve always wondered if these types worked – I’m always scared to try it hahah

    1. I was too, Destany! The smaller size of this one was much less scary than the big ones. It definitely works everywhere on my face except my chin. Go figure! It’s still worth it for me 🙂

  4. My chin has a mind of its own and it says “keep growing”. I tweeze constantly but that leaves me with little bumps. I’d still like to try it for my upper lip though.

    1. I don’t know why it doesn’t work on my chin – the shape of the bones? I just don’t know. But it does a great job everywhere else on my face. I was surprised how much I like it.

  5. I have never tried an epilators before, but this one definitely looks well worth trying!

  6. I used to use epilators all the time until I did laser hair removal. I still have some hair though, so I should get a new one. Shaving doesn’t last long enough.

    1. I haven’t tried laser removal yet. I have fine blonde hair and someone told me it wouldn’t work??

  7. I would be scared to use it too hehe.. I like how small it is, but I am gonna stick to my laser 🙂

    1. Haha, I know what you mean. I’m amazed that I got used to it immediately. I was told that lasers don’t work on fine, blonde hair – is that not true??

      1. Yeah it doesn’t work for us pale people if you have light facial hair or anywhere else. I just use it on my underarms right now hehe

  8. I’ve got to say, the though if this scares me, especially when I hear you say that you took off skin! But I have been itching to remove the fine baby hairs on my face lately, so I need to try something!
Kristina Vieweg recently posted…My Top 10 Fall Lip Colors for 2015!My Profile

    1. That’s exactly why I got it, Kristina! The fine blonde hairs were tweezable, and I didn’t want to do a chemical remover with my sensitive skin. Except for my chin, it does a great job removing my facial hair. The reason it took off my skin along/under my chin was I kept going back over it again and again trying to get it to work, as if it were an electric razor, and obviously, that wasn’t the right thing to do! I know not to do that again 😉 I’m happy with this petite epilator, but I’m considering trying one of the “big guns” some day

  9. I had an epilator a looooong time ago and it was great, except it took forever to do just my calves. I would totally be willing to try again with newer technology.

    1. I wanted this specifically for my face, and it literally takes less than 2 minutes to do (except for my chin that still doesn’t seem to work). I haven’t tried an epilator on my legs. I think for a big job like that, I’d need that bigger epilator (the ERase) that I saw on TV last year. But chances are, I’ll stick to shaving my legs, lol

  10. Oh I saw that on QVC I think! It looked really painful. I’m a baby when it comes to hair removal–my eyes tear when I tweeze my eyebrows sometimes. I think I’ll just stick to using a razor for any hairs that come up. Thanks for the review, Allison!

  11. I have always wanted to try one of these. I use a straight facial razor to get all that baby fuzz and then I just wax the rest. Hey… I’m Italian so I have to- lol! I would like to see how this measures up though

    1. The Emjoi Epi Slim+ is affordable so it could be worth a try for you. I like the fact that the hair removal lasts for about 6 weeks. I can’t wax because I have such sensitive skin, and I do sometimes shave my chin if I forget to tweeze. I may graduate to one of the big guns one of these days coz I’d love to find one that does work on my chin!

  12. I tried something like this on my legs and it gave me really bad bumps, my skin there is too sensitive for it.
Phyrra recently posted…Bright Purple Eyeshadow TutorialMy Profile

    1. I haven’t tried it anywhere else beside my face. I was happy that my sensitive skin on my face can handle it, but epilators aren’t for everyone.

  13. I don’t really have much facial hair (I know it is hard to believe, I can go weeks without threading my brows and I tweeze in between). But it does sound wonderful, I like that you waited a good amount of time to give us results.
NORAH recently posted…Simply Glamorous by Gary Cockerill Celebrity Makeup ArtistMy Profile

    1. How lucky, Norah! Menopause, dare I say it, did it for me. I waited because I didn’t want to diss it just because I had an issue with it on my chin. But I couldn’t give up the epilator ‘coz it does a very good job on the rest of my face.

  14. I have several epilators so my skin is used to the “shock”. I have Emjoi but a different model

    1. Do any of the models that you own work on your chin? If so, which please?

  15. Wow, it’s so affordable!

    1. This petite version, the Epi Slim+, is quite affordable. It’s perfect for the face or small areas because it has fewer tweezer head discs than the biggies

  16. I have to admit, I’ve been curious about these for a long time to conquer peach fuzz

    1. I like this mini-epilator for face hair removal because it’s small and not intimidating. But I hope someday to find one that does chin hair too!

  17. I think I’ll just stick to shaving. Fast and easy and painless. But great review. 😀
Erika recently posted…Cargo Swimmables Water Resistant Blush in BaliMy Profile

    1. Thanks, Erika. I generally agree with you, but for my face, I was looking for a longer-lasting solution and I’m not a fan of waxing so this mostly works for me. I just wish it would work on my chin, the fastest growing of the hairs.

  18. Oh, no .. I can’t do it .. lol. I look at that thing and see pain. Funny, though I can wax just fine.

    1. And I’m just the opposite, Monica, lol: no waxing for me!

  19. Haha it looks a little intimidating to me.

    1. Actually, I thought this petite epilator was much less intimidating than the regular sized ones, lol. But then, maybe an epilator isn’t for everyone 😉

  20. I have never tried an epilator before but have heard that these are really great to keep from your under arm discoloring… I think pain when I see them so I just continue to shave. lol
Honeygirlk recently posted…ColourPop Throws It Back – ColourPop Fall 2015 CollectionMy Profile

    1. Honey, I’m not brave enough to use this under my arms because I don’t know how to hold the skin taut so it won’t hurt. On my face, I can do it, but I think that’s it, lol. Never heard that an epilator would affect underarm skin discoloration – not sure how that would work?

      1. The Epilator doesn’t cause skin discoloration under the arm… it actually helps it to improve as shaving can often cause your underarm to turn dark. That is what my Esthetician told me when I seen her, I don’t have that issue, but noticed those with lighter skin may notice that issue.
Honeygirlk recently posted…Milani Amore Matte Lip Creme – Liquid to Matte LipsticksMy Profile

        1. Yes, I didn’t think the epilator caused discoloration, I just couldn’t figure out how it helped prevent discoloration. Shaving doesn’t darken my underarms, but I just recently a woman from Indian wrote in to my blog asking about how to lighten her underarms – and I had never heard of that problem before!

  21. I tried an epilator for the body years ago (and hated it) but have never tried one for face. I have the blonde peach fuzz thing going on under my lip, and dark hair above so this could be an interesting option.
Bailey recently posted…Mirabella Jewel Thief Collection | Holiday 2015My Profile

    1. It’s not totally pain-free, Bailey, but after the first little “shock” I get used to it and don’t feel it. And it does get rid of the hair for more than a month or so. It may be worth a try. This petite version has fewer tweezer head discs that the big kahunas so I think it’s easier to use especially on the face. However, I am a bit disappointed that it doesn’t remove the hair right on the chin bone, but other than that, it works well for me.

  22. I’ve always been curious to try these!

    1. I haven’t ventured beyond using it for my face, but it is definitely doable. In fact, I would like one of the big ones to see if that would work on my chin, and I think I’d try my legs next. For face, this petite one is a good way to start out.

  24. These always freak me out! I want to try them though
