On one of my first trips to Italy, I went into a fancy shop in Rome near the Spanish Steps that sold beautiful accessories for women: barrettes, hair clips, evening bags, shawls, makeup bags, fancy mirrors etc. I was mesmerized by it all because at the time there was really nothing like it in the U.S. although there was one very pricey drugstore on Madison Avenue in New York that had some similar things.
I ended up buying two beautiful metal barrettes from that shop in Rome that were encrusted with “rubies”, and I still have them now, 20 years later. The metal that those barrettes is made with is very, very heavy, and I always need to anchor them with a lot of hair to help them stay in and not slide out. But they’re so pretty, I make do.
In fact, I have a good sized collection of barrettes. Because I usually have shoulder length hair, I like to pull back the sides and clip them with a barrette or two. It’s neater and just a slightly different look that can be a little fancy or make my hair look neater. But most of my barrettes are utilitarian, ones that I picked up at the drugstore or Target.
Last week, my friend and sister blogger, Stephanie of Makeup or Shut Up, generously sent me a stunning barrette from the new Jen Atkin Hair Accessories Collection from Chloe + Isabel. I just love the whimsical packaging that Chloe + Isabel comes up with!
Stephanie has been working with Chloe + Isabel for over a year now. You may remember that I shared photos and details of the gorgeous pearl and crystal Chloe + Isabel necklace that Stephanie sent me last year (here’s the post).
Now let me tell you more about Jen Atkin and her new Hair Accessories Collection for Chloe + Isabel. I’m not always up on celeb stuff, so I didn’t know that Jen Atkin is a celebrity hairstylist. In fact, she works with Khloe Kardashian, Katy Perry, Jessica Alba, and Sofia Vergara. The collection that she collaborated on is characterized by simple, clean, modern design. And each piece is crafted in metal, not plastic, so it feels like hair jewelry rather than a random merely functional piece.
The barrette that Stephanie sent me is a perfect circle of brushed 12 K rose gold plated metal, the Oversized Circle Clip. It’s the perfect shade for my red hair. It measures a little more than two inches in diameter.
On the flip side of the barrette, it has little teeth that help the barrette grab onto my hair and stay in place, and it has an easy-to-close clip clasp. Plus, the Chloe + Isabel brand name as well as the designer name Jen Atkin is engraved on the back. It’s beautiful, and I just love wearing it!
If rose gold isn’t your shade, the Oversized Circle Clip also comes in silver and gold. They are priced at $18 each. And if you prefer smaller barrettes, there are duos of Small Circle Barrettes in rose gold, gold and silver plus hematite/a black shade, $24 the pair.

I was wondering the same thing, Cindy. I have such thick, coarse hair and I use it to hold a good hunk of hair so mine stays in very well. But with fine, thin hair honestly I am not sure.
