Summer is truly here, and sunscreens take center stage in the skincare pantheon. This summer, I am making an effort to remember to use lip balm with sunscreen when I am outdoors.

Protective Lip Balm
If you spend a lot of time outdoors like I do, you should add a lip balm with sunscreen to your regular routine.
This year, I am using Eco Lips with SPF. Because Eco Lips is natural, made with organic ingredients, and comes in tubes made with eco-friendly plant material called Plantpod instead of plastic, this is a terrific brand to use this summer and beyond.
Eco Lips sent me three of their lightweight, sheer, chemical sunscreens with SPF to try out:
- Sport SPF 30
- SPF 15 Berry flavor
- SPF 15 Mint.
Sport SPF 30
Not surprisingly, my favorite of the three is Eco Lips Sport SPF 30 because of the higher SPF level. Although the Eco Lips website says that it has a light vanilla flavor, to me it is taste/fragrance-free. Maybe they forgot to put the vanilla in mine? At any rate, it is lightweight, goes on like a breeze. All around a fantastic protective lip balm.

Flavored SPF 15
The Berry flavor SPF 15 is good one as well. I have their Pure & Simple Raspberry lip balm that I use throughout the year that doesn’t have sunscreen. The SPF 15 Berry is very similar but with the added benefit of some sunscreen.
Active ingredients: Avobenzone 3%, Octinoxate 7.5% Octisalate 5%, Octocrylene 5%
Inactive Ingredients: *Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, *Cera Flava (Beeswax), *†Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, *†Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, *Berry Flavor, *Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Oil, Mixed Tocopherols (Vitamin E), *Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, *Calendula Officinalis (Calendula) Flower Extract. *Certified Organic Ingredient †Fair Trade Certified™ by Fair Trade USA.® 20% of Product
Because my lips can’t handle mint, I will give the Mint SPF 15 variant away to someone in my local Buy Nothing group. It contains the same ingredients as the Berry flavor but with peppermint and spearmint essential oils.
Zinc SPF 15
Though I haven’t tried this one, coconut-vanilla flavored Eco Lips Zinc SPF 15 with reef-safe mineral sunscreen is another option. The website says that it may give lips a whitish tint, but usually if you rub it in the white disappears.
Other Eco Lips Info
Cruelty-free, gluten-free, fair trade Eco Lips products are available on the Eco Lips website, but they are widely available at retailers such as Whole Foods, Amazon, Mom’s Organic Market, Walmart, Sprouts, Wegman’s, and other natural foods retailers. The price is around $3.49/tube.
As you know, I also love Eco Lips and use their lip balms all of the time. I have them stashed everywhere, too! Thanks for your excellent review, Allison!

I havent tried eco-lips yet but I also rely on lip balms with SPF. My last purchase was one from ELTA MD mineral based and yeah…it gives the white lips for a minute but if you keep mashing yourlips together it goes away. lol. Coconut Vanilla sounds yummy and one I would try
SPF is our friend and we should remember to include it every where. Glad to know about ECO Lips.
