Fiona Stiles Ultrasuede High Intensity Lip Color and Tarteist Lipliner

Ulta Beauty emailed me a 20% off coupon last week that was good for most prestige brands and products.

I needed to buy a gift for a friend, and far be it for me to not take advantage of a beauty sale to replace a staple and/or try something new. I did both. I’m nearing the end of my tried-and-true Urban Decay Anti-aging Eye Primer, so I picked up another tube. I’ve heard great things about Anastasia Liquid Lipstick, so I thought I’d buy one. I can’t wear matte liquid lipstick so I looked at the Anastasia glosses. Unfortunately, none of the shades really suited me. So I wandered over to the Fiona Stiles section and checked out her liquid lipsticks called Ultrasuede High Intensity Lip Color.

Described as “mattine” (matte satin, ya think?), I thought the formula might work for my dry lips. I found a shade that I adored, Lenox, a peachy dusty rose neutral shade.

I tried a swipe of the lipstick on my arm and I was sold: opaque, highly pigmented color that dried down somewhat but not completely matte but left a nice glossy look. Seemed like the perfect hybrid formula in the perfect shade for me.

So I thought I’d test it out immediately. I wore it to the beach. I decided to do the torture test – skip the lipliner. Also, you can see that I didn’t exfoliate my lips first. It went on with no trouble. Pretty, isn’t it?

It was hot at the beach and I was thirsty so I drank a bottle of water. My cousin Gordon kindly pointed out to me that my lipstick bled: both the upper and bottom lip. Ugh. I resolved that this liquid lipstick must be worn with a lipliner, but then I knew that even before I decided to skip it.

Next day, I wore the same lipstick back to the beach, but this time I paired it with Tarteist Lipliner in Latergram, a deluxe sample that I received in my May Sephora Play bag.

Although the shade was not the exact match for the Fiona Stiles Ultrasuede in Lenox that I thought it was going to be, it wasn’t awful, almost close enough (and on its own, it’s really pretty).

Same thing as the day before, I grabbed a bottle of water, drank half of it, and my cousin again pointed out that my lipstick was feathering. Now, I was embarrassed. I did what I was supposed to do, but it still didn’t stay put.

Yesterday, I wore a different, regular bullet lipstick to the beach. No problem.

Today, I’m at home and I decided to try Lenox again, paired with Tarteist Latergram, the closest match I’ve got – I probably should’ve used Milani’s Anti-Feathering universal lipliner, but that’ll be tomorrow’s experiment. Not too long after I applied the liner and liquid lipstick, I noticed a little bleeding at the tips of my cupid’s bow. I’ve been drinking water from a glass, and unless you wait about a half hour till it dries completely, the lipstick comes off on the glass. But I still love the color, and it is a semi-long-wear liquid lipstick, leaving behind a lot of color as it fades. A lighter version of the shade was still on my lips about 6-8 hours after I first applied it and after eating.

Do I recommend Fiona Stiles Ultrasuede Lip Color? I wish I could recommend it without reservation, but I cannot. I recommend it if you don’t mind fussing a bit. I’m keeping and wearing Lenox because I love the non-drying formula, and I especially love the color. I’ll make do. But if you’re looking for a low maintenance liquid lipstick, this isn’t it.

The Tarteist Lipliner is fine, and the shade Latergram is a pretty nude shade.

Postscript: I tried wearing Fiona Stiles Ultrasuede with Urban Decay Ozone Lipliner and the waxy universal lip pencil did the trick in terms of stopping feathering or bleeding during normal wear. I still found that I can’t drink from a bottle or cup while it is still on the wet side which can last for about an hour and a half. Today’s National Kissing Day, and unless you want to leave a lasting impression, no kissing with Fiona Stiles Ultrasuede Lip Color, lol. xoxo

Has anyone else tried this lipstick yet? Please weigh in if you have.

That’s such a shame!! That color just suits you to a “T”. I hope the Milani’s Anti-feathering works because as I said that color is beautiful on you. Plus the wear time sounds pretty decent.

    1. Thank you, Paula! I ended up using Urban Decay Ozone lipliner (their universal), and it worked quite well. It’s better than using the pretty Tarteist pencil that’s not quite an exact match. Also, the waxiness of the pencil did prevent it from feathering. I have learned I can’t drink from a bottle when wearing it, and I can’t drink from a glass until an hour or so when it dries down a bit unless I don’t mind getting all over the rim. But as you said, that shade really does suit me to a T!

  2. Thank you for such an honest review, Allison! Frankly I have never heard of this brand before but what a huge shame, the shade is so pretty but no thanks if it bleeds that badly.

    1. I used UD Ozone lipliner, and the waxiness of the lipliner pencil did the trick to prevent bleeding. However, for the first hour or so, it comes off on a glass or bottle and can smudge. I love the color and the non-drying formula so I’ll continue to wear it, but it is far from low maintenance.

  3. That’s a beautiful color but I’m not into fussing. I’m glad to see a review of this line, I saw it at the new Ulta nearby and was curious!

    1. I love the shade, and used with Urban Decay Ozone universal lipliner, it doesn’t feather or bleed. But it comes off on bottles, glasses etc for more than an hour after application. It is definitely high maintenance but I love the color and comfortable formula. I also bought a couple of cream eyeshadows that I’ve gotta review soon.

  4. What a shame that this gorgeous shade is a miss! It looks lovely on you, but you really gave it a fair chance! I think that this is a definite pass for me because I get so busy at work that I seldom have time to touch-up or check my makeup, and if it can’t stay put– then it’s too much trouble.

    1. Yes, it’s one you have to fuss with. But I love the shade so I’ll continue to fuss with it 😉

  5. This is a gorgeous shade, stinks about the feathering! But, glad to hear Ozone worked, I’ve been using that a lot lately. Pretty liner, it was pretty darn close too!

    1. I’d be curious to see how they work for you, Shipra. Very pretty shades, very comfortable to wear but very messy: feather and bleed without a waxy lipliner and comes off on the glass whenever I take a sip

  8. I am on a no buy so I skipped the coupon (darn it) but I want to take a better look at Fiona Stiles. I’ll skip this lipstick though since I hate to fuss.

    1. I bought two of the cream eyeshadows but haven’t really worn them yet – they’re very wet and super creamy. I need to give them a go. Love the shade and comfort of the formula of this lippie but too messy

  9. This looks great!!!

    1. Such a pretty shade, such a comfortable formula to wear, but so messy: bleeds, feathers, comes off on the glass 🙁

  10. What a bummer about this traveling 🙁 I haven’t check out this line, but thanks for the heads up about these lippies. I’ll for sure stay away.

    1. Thank you, Norah. Unfortunately, without a good waxy universal lipliner like UD Ozone, it bleeds and feathers. And it comes off on any glass or bottle if I take a drink – messy. But love the shade and the comfort of the formula. I have two of the cream eyeshadows. Gotta find ’em and review them. The shades are pretty and they’re very very very creamy, almost wet.

  12. It’s SO pretty on you! I’m so sorry about the formula! ?

    1. The UD Ozone lipliner helps the feathering but it’s a drag that the lipstick comes off on anything I drink. Pretty shade for me but boo

  14. Aww it’s a gorgeous color, it’s a shame about the feathering/bleeding into the lip lines
Mai recently posted…June 2016 Beauty FavoritesMy Profile

    1. The waxy Urban Decay Ozone lipliner definitely worked to prevent the feathering but it is a must to wear it, otherwise a mess. And though it’s so comfortable, it’s a drag not to be able to drink anything for an hour or two till it dries

  15. Do you apply lip balm before liquid lipstick? That’s one trick. I like Anastasia and more recently Smashbox. Stila is another favorite. MAC is a letdown
Kath Thefabzilla recently posted…Beach Style & What’s In My Beach BagMy Profile

    1. With my dry lips, it doesn’t make any difference if I wear balm or not if it’s a real liquid matte so I’ve given up on matte. I like Stila and have a couple but they still dry my lips though they’re my go-to when it really has to last. This Fiona Stiles is very comfortable to wear and doesn’t bleed with the UD Ozone liner, but it’s a drag that I can’t have a drink of water for a couple of hours till it dries down. I will try Anastasia’s gloss, not matte, next time there’s a sale. I haven’t tried Smashbox liquids yet. Thank you for all the great reccos!

  16. The wear is a total bummer as that shade is so perfect.

Feathering is so irritating. Gorgeous color, though.

    1. Thank you, Rachel! I’m glad the UD Ozone lipliner helps the feathering. But the lipstick still comes off in gobs on a glass. The color makes it all worth it 😉

  20. That is really beautiful. Like Brooke, I’m not into fussing – unless it’s a color worth fussing over and I think this is a great color for you.
