Friday Find: Boosting My Mood This Winter with NOW Foods Orange Essential Oil

The sun is definitely getting stronger. Even though it was 7 degrees this morning, the sun in my kitchen and great room made it seem like spring. OK, maybe not like spring yet, but I can tell it’s coming. Eventually.

But in spite of more and brighter sunshine, I still have been feeling like I need a boost especially when I’m sitting in my office during the day trying to write my daily blogpost. So when I was shopping at Whole Foods recently, I spied a bottle of orange essential oil from NOW Foods. I first heard about NOW Foods from Anastasia at Glamorable who is an ambassador for the 50 year old natural products company. She has written about quite a number of NOW food, supplement, body care, and other products. So when I saw that NOW Foods had a broad line of essential oils that were also affordably priced, I decided to try one. At $4.99 for 1 fl. oz., the price was right. It also comes in a 4 oz. bottle (an excellent deal for it on Amazon), and there is also an organic version of orange oil.

NOW Foods Orange essential oil is 100% pure orange oil that is cold pressed from orange peel. It really smells like orange peel!  The attributes of this essential oil are: uplifting, refreshing and invigorating. I’ve always been a fan of citrus scents, and the orange essential oil definitely perks me up, especially in winter.

I’m diffusing it with my portable essential oil diffuser from Gurunanda (reviewed here). I absolutely love this little gem of a diffuser, called Natural Mist “The Pluggy”, because it’s so handy and easy to use.

It has a USB plug that can be used to plug the device into a laptop or pad or even the USB in your car. Or you can plug the unit into a detachable plug that goes into the wall outlet if you’re using it at home or just want to do it that way. You invert the essential oil bottle, screw it into the top of the unit, and it slowly drops oil into the diffuser. The oil is broadcast as puffs of essential oil every few minutes (it has 2 speeds), rather than continuous diffusion. For me, it’s easier to use because there’s no water involved. I use mine all the time.

But I also have a regular room diffuser from Simply Earth where you add drops of essential oil to water in the cavity of the diffuser. The Simply Earth diffuser also cycles through different colors, and it’s fun to watch at night (reviewed here). The room diffuser does a better job at broadcasting scent throughout a larger space.

NOW Foods suggests creating a blend called  “Orange You Delightful” created by adding 10 drops of orange oil and 25 drops of vanilla concentrate oil to the water in a diffuser. It sounds just like a Creamsicle!  I was unfamiliar with “vanilla concentrate oil”, and I tried to find it on the NOW Foods website. Turns out Vanilla Oil is made with the carrier oil, jojoba, along with pure vanilla bean extract, vanilla planifolia extract. The vanilla that we all have in our kitchens for baking should NOT be substituted for vanilla concentrate oil because it is made with alcohol rather than a carrier oil. While vanilla concentrate oil is much pricier than orange oil because of the high cost of vanilla these days, it sounds delectable and like it would be worth the splurge.
