Friday Find: C.O. Bigelow Lemon Body Cream

My fever has gone away, thank goodness. Even though I still have stuffed sinuses and chest congestion and cough, I am feeling a bit better. Yay. So I thought I’d do a quick “Friday Find”. My “Friday Finds” are often things I find in my stash that I had forgotten about that are really good and worth talking about.

That’s the case with C.O. Bigelow Lemon Body Cream. I don’t really shop at my local mall very much, and I better start because it looks like all the stores are leaving, boo. Anyway, I did shop the lovely Bigelow store at the mall a couple of years ago. They have an intriguing assortment of brands and products IMHO, in addition to their own brand. I remember I bought a fabulous Italian perfume, and I also bought a jar of their own Lemon Body Cream because I love anything lemon.

C.O. Bigelow Lemon Body Cream features Lemon Oil and Extracts 4.5%, and I think it gives the cream just a very subtle lemon scent even though the product info says it’s fragrance-free.

I can’t believe I forgot about this beauty. It’s a lovely pale yellow color. The cream itself is very lightweight, in fact it’s almost soupy when you stick your finger in it. But I like it. I’d describe the consistency as more oil than cream. That makes it easy to apply and quick to absorb. It leaves a greaseless, silky, hydrated feeling on my usually bone-dry skin. Honestly, it’s such a welcome change from shea butter. I found two abandoned jars of just plain shea butter, and I’m tossing them both. And you know I seldom toss anything that’s not finished up! I can’t deal right now with that thickness.

When I looked up some information on the product website, it said that Lemon Body Cream was developed for very dry skin which is why it works for well for me. It contains nourishing Lemon Extracts (super charged with Vitamin C), ultra-moisturizing but completely spreadable Shea Butter and replenishing Kukui Nut Oil (rich in essential fatty acids).

Also according to the product information, Lemon Body Cream is a product that Bigelow developed in 1870! When I lived in New York City, I used to go down to an old apothecary in the Village that was called Bigelow Chemists. I was a broke college student with long hair, and I used to save my babysitting and bartending money to buy occasional treats including little plastic, single-use “pillows” of Bigelow’s own shampoos and conditioners. The dark store was a fabulous, dusty, treasure trove of goodies in glass cases and piled high racks for a young beauty enthusiast. In fact, I still have the Kent of London Boar Bristle Brush and Comb that I bought at Bigelow Chemists I won’t tell you how many decades ago, and I still use them. The store closed a number of years ago, and I guess some big company bought the name as well as the recipes/formulas to their products which is better than losing them entirely.

So that’s it. If you’re looking for a different approach to body hydration, consider C.O. Bigelow Lemon Body Cream, a lightweight, easy-to-apply, hydrating oil-cream. It is not tested on animals, and it’s made in the U.S. You can buy it in a number of different sizes including 8 oz., 32 oz. at C.O. Bigelow and Nordstrom. I must have the starter size: 1.7 oz. It’ll be time for more soon! Plus there are other products in the lemon line including lip balm, hand cream, body wash, and I think shampoo and conditioner too since that was the product combo I used to buy years ago.

Have you tried C.O. Bigelow Lemon Body Cream? Have you tried any other Bigelow products? Did you ever go to the Bigelow Chemists on Fifth Ave in the Village?

  1. I’m not familiar with this brand at all so this is a great read. And I’m glad that your fever finally broke and you’re feeling yourself again. You were for a long time, Allison. xx

    1. I’m still sick, Shireen, but not having a fever is a blessing! I haven’t left the house since last Friday! But I have to go to CVS to get some Mucinex or something to get rid of my congestion in nose and chest so I can stop coughing/choking and get some sleep! I was up till 4am, ugh. But I do feel a little better than I did. As I mentioned, C.O. Bigelow was just an old-fashioned store in Greenwich Village New York City till a few years ago when they closed up the old apothecary shop and sold the name and formulas to some big company. Not sure if they’re sold in Canada, but Bath & Bodyworks carries a lot of the Bigelow product line. Their stuff is really good!

  2. I am so sorry that you had that awful bug as well! I spend a few weeks sick from it, and still have congestion. It was a particularly nasty bug this time around! I love lemon body creams, and therefore this really must go on my list! I hope that you feel much better soon! xoxo

    1. Thanks, Helen! You’re right, it is an awful and long-lasting bug! I’ve been sick for a week so far, and though I’m glad the fever went away, I still feel awful. The old Bigelow Chemists in NY would have been a place that you would have loved. I’m glad someone bought the name and product formulas to keep their heritage alive!

  3. This sounds heavenly! Hope you are feeling better soon!

So glad you’re feeling better! I’m like you and love lemon anything!! I would love to try this. I remember a few years ago I saw it in a Bath & Bodyworks store.

    1. Thank you, Rose. I am a little better. Off to CVS to get Mucinex so I can sleep without coughing & being congested all night long. But yes, and I was going to mention CO Bigelow at Bath & Bodyworks, but when I looked online, they had the other products in the lemon line but not the Body Cream. Maybe it was a mistake, or maybe this product is just in the stores. Anyway, they’re having the semiannual sale on CO Bigelow at BBW now! I am blown away by how much I like this soupy lemony cream 🙂 Thanks for taking the time to say hi and comment xoxo Have a great weekend!

  5. Well doesn’t this lemon body cream sound nice! I have been trying to use up my stash of creams and lotions but hope to be able to buy soon.

    1. For some strange reason, I’ve never been a big BBW shopper so I didn’t realize till I wrote this post that they even carried the brand. But when I searched for the Lemon Body Cream on BBW online, I couldn’t find it. I’m actually going to head to BBW at the mall and see if they have it in stock in store because I’d love to buy it during the semi-annual sale going on now!

  8. I love those products when Bath and Body carry those!! Love a good smelling lemon body balm!!

    1. Yes, CO Bigelow is at BBW but I couldn’t find the Lemon Body Cream listed on BBW.com. I need to go in and pick up a jar during the sale!

  9. I love this brand in general. The scent sounds right up my alley!

I just saw this post, don’t know how I missed it. Anyway,I also love lemon scented products and this sounds lovely especially with the back story of the little store in the village. I’m glad your fever broke and hope you will continue to recuperate. Being sick stinks. I’m sure you get all sorts of advice so I’ll just ask if you use essential oils? It’s the type of thing your either a fan of or not but I like my diffuser when I’m not feeling 100% for any reason. Keep getting better, know there are friends wishing you well. 🙂

    1. Thank you, Laura! For some reason, this darn virus is taking forever to leave me. It’s 8 days now, and I’m still under the weather. But better than I was 🙂 You reminded me that I received a diffuser and essential oils set probably back at the beginning or mid November and I still haven’t taken it out of the box. I’ll look for it tomorrow and try giving it a go. In fact, I was trying to find my bottle of peppermint oil so I could put a few drops on my shower wall to make some peppermint steam but I can’t find it. Thank you for thinking of me! Hope you enjoyed the holidays xoxo

  11. Lemon body cream sounds absolutely amazing and I’ve heard great things about other C.O. Bigelow products. I’ll have to give this a try.

    1. If you have dry skin, the CO Bigelow Lemon Body Cream is quite wonderful because it’s so lightweight, greaseless yet so hydrating. It’s a very nice change from thick body butters.
