Friday Find: China Glaze Nail Lacquer, Fairy Dust

I’m a sucker for glitter, any glitter. So when I read a blogpost about China Glaze Fairy Dust Nail Lacquer and how it made everything better, I thought I had to have it. The blogpost was hysterically funny, and it really focused on the glitter.

I needed to buy a salve on Amazon for my exfoliative keratolysis (that’s another story for another day), and in order to qualify for free shipping, I needed to spend another $5. So China Glaze Fairy Dust got added to my order. It was like getting it for free.

Fairy Dust looks great in the bottle. So sparkly!

But on bare nails, not so much. My nails look yellow and discolored from gardening, and the glitter topper doesn’t help. I’m a little disappointed. I was hoping for more glitter, more bling.

China Glaze Nail Lacquer, Fairy Dust on bare nails

Since Fairy Dust is essentially a topper, I decided to do my accent nails in one of my favorite shades, Milani Color Statement Nail Lacquer in Pink Beige, to see how it looks.

China Glaze Nail Lacquer glitter topper, Fairy Dust

I like Fairy Dust much better on top of the colored polish.

Although China Glaze Fairy Dust provides a subtle luster rather than lots of glitter like I was expecting, I’ve decided that I like the more restrained look on top of a color. On bare nails, there was almost no contrast at all. So now I know how I’ll use Fairy Dust in the future, to enhance color.

Have you tried or would you try Fairy Dust? Is that enough glitter for you?

China Glaze Nail Lacquer comes in a 14 ml/0.5 fl. oz. bottle, and it contains China clay, a hardener that gives porcelain its shine. All China Glaze colours are free of DBP, Toluene and added Formaldehyde.  It’s made in the U.S. It’s widely available online and in stores such as Sally’s Beauty and Ulta.

    1. That’s exactly it, Jessica, it “kicks it up a notch or two”. I think I was expecting more bling, but now I like it for what it is

  3. Now you know I love my sparkles and glittery polish. I have to make sure I don’t own this one already because I need it 🙂

    1. hahaha, Heather! Fairy Dust was a little different than I expected. I thought I was going to get a lot of sparkle but it’s more of a luster. I’ve decided a like it though, just not on top of my bare nails!

  4. I’m loving Fairy Dust. I love glitter too!

    1. Fairy Dust was actually less glittery and more luster-y than I expected. Doesn’t look so great on my bare nails but over color, it is so pretty!

  5. Yeah, I see what you mean about using it alone. But as a topper it looks stunning!

    1. Yes, my plan failed, lol! But I love it on the pink beige so now I just need to redo my mani!

  6. Try the Essie Luxeffects polish for a chunkier glitter with more coverage, I LOVE it. I do like this one over a polish, though!
Chelsea recently posted…Body by Victoria | Victoria’s SecretMy Profile

    1. I will look for Essie Luxeffects, Chelsea! I was thinking this was going to be a chunky one, but to my surprise, the luster is growing on me, especially over a color (over clear polish was a mistake on my part!). And another good thing is that Fairy Dust is easy to remove, yay!!

  7. Fairy Dust is true to its name! A holo dusting that kicks up a mani – I love it, it’s a staple! Good find.

    1. I like Fairy Dust, too, though it was different from what I expected! On top of clear polish, not so much, but on top of a color, so pretty! I think you’re right: it’ll be one of my staples 🙂

  8. I love the name, I’d buy it just for that haha It would be so pretty if it were opaque, but it does look nice over that pink polish! I have a few Essie glitters that are chunkier and wear pretty nicely on their own.

    1. It was kind of an experiment to try it over clear polish because I didn’t realize it was such a fine glitter. It definitely looks better over a cream polish. Fortunately, it was easy to remove and now I can do a real mani with it. I also have some glitter toppers that I can wear alone but this isn’t one of them 😉

  9. Love Fairy Dust! It’s such a gorgeous way to jazz up a mani.

    1. I thought this would work over clear polish, but not so much. I think Fairy Dust over cremes especially pastels and nudes is the way I’ll go next time. The luster is so pretty though.

  10. I have this and love it as a topper!
Cindy (Prime Beauty) recently posted…8 Uses for Coconut Oil!My Profile

    1. Yes, that’s how I’ll wear it – as a topper. Trying it on top of clear was a mistake. So much prettier on Pink Beige.

  11. Valerie C. says:

It’s so pretty. I have to buy one. I like shimmer on my toes sometimes too. I had a real issue trying to remove a polish with glitter in it (Deborah Lippman/Mermaid’s Dream). It took forever. But, a top coat like yours, applied over a cream is no problem.

    1. Valerie, Fairy Dust is not at all hard to remove. I think it’s because it’s a fine glitter that makes it almost but not quite as easy to remove as regular polish. It really is pretty. My experiment of applying it over clear polish was a failure, but on top of pastel or even a nude shade is beautiful. next I’ll try on top of a bright or deep shade. This luster topper (rather than a big glitter) is really growing on me. If you get it, let me know how you like it and how you wear it!

  12. Fairy Dust is great for layering

    1. Oh, layering, I wouldn’t have thought of that. I’ll try it!

  13. Milani Pink Beige, with Fairy Dust, is so beautiful! That is the sort of nail you can wear to work and look fancy enough to please yourself LOL.
Renu recently posted…Bath & Unwind Beauty Box Vol. 1My Profile

    1. I agree, Renu. It was a mistake for me to try it on top of clear polish. It looks so much prettier on top of a color and especially a pastel

  14. I think glitter toppers are super pretty, but they are such a pain to take off which is why I never use them, lol!

    1. This one is a cinch to remove, Brianna. Just about like regular polish.

  15. Fairy Dust all of the things! I’m on my third bottle. 😀
Erika recently posted…My Milani Rose BlushesMy Profile

    1. No kidding? 3rd bottle wow! My idea of using it on top of clear polish was a mistake. Definitely is more impressive on colors. Now I know

  16. It really does look like fairy dust, so delicate and stunning 🙂 Enjoy!! It’s a beautiful color for you.

    1. I’m definitely going to play around with it on more colors. My idea about using it on top of clear was a mistake. Oh well, now I know!

  17. I should get this since sometimes partway through my week I want a different look and this would do it. I’m wearing a matte shade right now and by Wednesday this would be perfect on it.
MarciaF recently posted…Manuka Secrets full line review and giveawayMy Profile

    1. That’s a great idea, Marcia! It would definitely transform a matte polish. I’ve gotta try it on more colors. On clear polish was a mistake, I think

  18. This topcoat can transform any color!

    1. I think that’s what I need to do: use it on more colors! Over clear was a mistake 😉

  19. I don’t have Fairy Dust and always assumed I had something similar, but I’m thinking I kind of need it now. It’s so pretty!
Bailey recently posted…Maritime Naturals Vitamin C SerumMy Profile

    1. Fairy Dust turned out to be different from all the other heavier toppers with bigger glitter that I own. Although the way I initially used it was wrong, I really like it now and it’s much easier to remove than most glitter toppers. I recommend it!

  20. Nataile Brown says:

I don’t have this polish but do have several glitter toppers. They do need to be used over another shade. It’s disappointing that, in the bottle, it looks like it’s going to be a full-on opaque glitter. It’s really hard to tell from the bottle if a glitter polish is going to be a “topper” or be opaque so I usually look at swatches before I purchase. It’s quite pretty though over the shade you chose. 🙂

    1. I read a comedic review of Fairy Dust, Natalie, and I got the impression it was full-on glitter. So I thought I could wear it on its own. Mistake. However, over another shade like Milani Pink Beige, I really like it a lot. The luster is quite pretty! And it’s much easier to remove than a regular glitter topper. All’s well that ends well?!

  21. It makes a great topper for sure!

    1. I think so too: very pretty over another color! And easy to remove too

  22. Fairy Dust ALL the things! lol. I just got out my bottle the other day to jazz up a mani I’m posting on Sunday. It has that subtle ‘thing’ that just makes a mani better the way it catches the light.
Nidia – Lit From Within recently posted…OxyRub The Pain Away #OxyRubMy Profile

    1. You’re right, Nidia. I had misunderstood what kind of topper it was going to be. Definitely not so great on its own, but transformative on a color.

  23. Such a beautiful shade. LOVE IT!

    1. Oh, I didn’t know SP had a dupe and that’s great

  25. I’ve gone through several bottles of Fairy Dust!

    1. I had expected Fairy Dust to have a different consistency, but now I’m finding I like it as it is…just not on its own

  26. Polishes like these, I can agree, look much better on top of an opaque polish.
Kim recently posted…LUNA by FOREO for Sensitive/Normal Skin ReviewMy Profile

    1. Yes, my experiment was a failure, but I’m finding I really do like it as a topper and it’s so much easier than most glitters to remove, yay

  27. I love your China Glaze glitter polish because it reminds me of either Snow or Fairy Dust and the right amount of particles! Great mani! 🙂

    1. Thank you, Ursula, for visiting some of my older content and taking the time to comment! I need to dig out the China Glaze glitter polish again. If I remember correctly, the glitter pieces are a little bigger than Fairy Dust that I also own, but both are gorgeous and so fun to wear!
