Friday Find: Maybelline Dream Wonder Powder

Although this isn’t something that I’ve just rediscovered in my stash, Maybelline Dream Wonder Powder is nevertheless a “find”. Over a year ago, I needed a setting powder and I didn’t want to spend a lot. So the Dream Wonder name of this Maybelline pressed powder compact called out to me. It’s a very utilitarian looking compact, basically just clear plastic with an off-gold plastic bottom. In fact, it’s kind of ugly. The mirror is hidden underneath the pan.

I really like this powder. Some powders make my already dry skin drier, but this doesn’t. It doesn’t settle into my fine lines. It doesn’t cake. It just takes down the shine. And at this time of year (warm/hot and humid) and with all the hydrating layers of Paula’s Choice skincare plus BB/CC cream that I’m wearing, I need something to set all these layers and give me a finish that’s somewhere between dewy and matte. It’s very lightweight and has a silky feel. Love it.

Although the compact comes with a sponge pad applicator that I use in a pinch, I usually apply it with a big fluffy powder brush.

Maybelline Dream Wonder Powder, shade Porcelain/Ivory, pressed powder

This is the second Maybelline Dream Wonder Powder that I’ve purchased. My shade is 10 Porcelain/Ivory, and it comes in 16 shades though they tend to be light to medium shades. It contains 5.5 g/0.19 oz. I paid around $10 for it at CVS, but it is widely available and probably much cheaper at Walmart and elsewhere. It’s made in the U.S.

  1. That looks like a great powder, especially for the price!

    1. It really is a great, affordable setting powder. I just wish it had a nicer looking compact but for the price, I shouldn’t complain about that 😉

  2. If you repurchased it, that says a lot! I wish it was cruelty-free because now I want to try it!

    1. Exactly. I wish Maybelline would become cruelty-free. I wish all the big brands would just do it.

  3. Laura says:

It is so cheap and effective which is nice.

    1. I agree, Laura! It works so well for me. Look out for an email from me soon, K?

  4. Wow, I seldom wear a setting powder, but the fact that this is your second one speaks volumes!

    1. I sometimes need it to take down the shine from all my highly emollient products layered on my face, lol!

  5. I had used the Maybelline Dream Matte for awhile, but they discontinued it and made this instead. Haven’t tried this yet, I feel like all powders are just kind of the same…

    1. At your age, Tess, they probably are. But as I’ve gotten older and have some lines, some powders get into my lines and make me look older. This doesn’t! It floats on top. Much better.

    1. It’s perfect for my dry skin, and I think it would be great for combo skin too. You might like it!

  6. Nataile Brown says:

I’m glad this powder sets so well for you. I’ll have to keep it in mind during the humid months here in Florida. Currently, I use the Rimmel Matte powder with a stippling brush so it doesn’t go on too heavy. It works very well for me but it’s also quite mattifying. This would be nice for a slightly dewier finish. Thanks!

    1. I hope it will work for you, too, Natalie. I looked at the ratings on the Maybelline website, and it seems to get raves. Ive had really good luck with it. I’m not looking for a matte look especially since I have such dry skin. But I’m wearing so many layers of hydrating skincare and foundation lately that I need a good powder so I don’t shine! Let me know if you try it 🙂

  7. This sounds like a great powder, I wonder how it’ll work on my oily skin!
Mai recently posted…Nails of the Day: Turquoise Stone Nail ArtMy Profile

    1. Probably fine, Mai. It’s not hydrating, but it isn’t drying. Kind of a neutral. So if you look for a mattifying powder, this might not be it, but if it’s a regular neutral powder, it would probably be fine.

  8. You are so right about the packaging. This powder sounds amazing, and it is good to hear it works well on dry skin.

    1. As we say in Boston, it’s “wicked ugly”, but it works so well just the same

  9. I love getting great products at affordable prices.

    1. So nice to hear from you, Tee!! Yes, me too. This powder is a winner, but it needs to come in even more than the 16 shades!

  10. I don’t usually use setting powder since I have dry skin but this looks interesting since it’s your second time purchase and it speaks volume xo Thanks Allison

    1. Sharon, I don’t use it every day either. But I’m using a new hydrating skincare regimen, and sometimes I look shiny with all the hydrating layers so this stuff does the trick. Not drying, not mattifying, just takes down the shine. And affordable 🙂

  11. Powder is a necessity for us oily-skinned folk, but when you find a great one that works with dry skin, that’s a keeper!

    1. Yes, I’m living with the ugliness in exchange for a very good but affordable product!

  15. Lightweight powder is so hard to find. Thanks for sharing!

  16. I never understood why makeup comes with those low quality sponges and weird applicators. Everyone I know uses their own brushes anyway. Anyway, back to the compact 🙂 This looks like a really nice shade that might actually match my complexion – it can be so hard sometimes to find a decent product for fair skin at the drugstore price level!

    1. I think you might be one shade paler than I, Anastasia, and I think there is a lighter one. I have been known to use the awful sponge if I’m out and about and bringing it with me, but the sponge is ugh. Yes, they hardly need to give one.

  17. I love most everything Maybelline has to offer, this powder sounds like a great addition to a summer makeup routine!

Kristina Vieweg recently posted…Pretty in Pink: Julep Plush PoutsMy Profile

    1. It really does the trick for me, Kristina. If you see it at Walmart or have Extrabucks at CVS, it’s worth a try if you need a new powder and don’t mind the utilitarian packaging!

  19. rach says:

I gave this one a shot after the last time you mentioned it, and I’m decently impressed. You’re right about the compact being ugly though, and I absolutely hate that the mirror is UNDER the powder (very hard to use that way!) but the product itself is nice and feels so silky that I can mostly overlook those negative parts.

    1. Exactly! Truly one of the ugliest compacts ever, and yes, flipping up the powder to use the mirror is a pain! But this powder is so lightweight but still covers and it doesn’t settle into my lines, so I am very satisfied with it. I’m glad you have good things to say about it too. Now, I just wish Maybelline and all the other big brands would get on the cruelty-free bandwagon. Hopefully, that’ll be next.

  20. Valerie C. says:

It really looks like a great powder! I use MAC Skinfinish Natural in the lightest shade. I love it, but not the $32. price. I’m going to pick this one up and compare. I could save $$.

    1. Valerie, I don’t know how this would compare with MAC Skinfinish Natural! I have a translucent powder mini-compact from Estee Lauder, and I must say I prefer the Maybelline in the ugly container to the EL because of the silkier powder from Maybelline. I also bought some Ben Nye setting powder and I have to give that a try again. It’s messier because it’s loose powder and it’s not portable like the Maybelline. Heck, if you’re in Walmart or in CVS with Extrabucks and see a good shade in the Maybelline Dream Wonder Powder, it’s probably worth a try to compare to your MAC powder!! If you do, let me know!!

      1. Valerie C. says:

I agree, it’s really worth a try. It’s funny how many pricey must-haves are in my kit lately. lol It gets expensive….then there are skin care products, hair products etc! Even my son told me that my bathroom is like a little store. haha

        1. Oh wow, Valerie, I love that – “like a little store”! I know what you’re saying. I may have to move soon! I’m trying to convince myself that I cannot buy the UD Naked Smokey Palette just because I want 2 of the shades when I have new palettes that I haven’t even used yet. I gotta make myself use the Estee Lauder Mad Men Limited Edition gorgeous Blush compact that I had to have a couple of years ago that I’ve used about twice. Yikes! However, all that said, I’ve gotta review and show the swatches of the new shades of butterLONDON lip crayons that arrived yesterday. I truly adore the Ladybird shade lip crayon that I got from bL last month and I jokingly said I wanted all the shades. Well, I think I’ve got them now as well as a set for a giveaway. They really are incredible, lol!

  23. Ursula says:

Enjoyed reading your Maybelline review! I do use Maybelline but still have a difficult time getting the right foundation shade so I use mostly their eye and lip products!

    Ursula aka Blueridge Beauty

    1. It’s tough to get the right shade of foundation in the drugstore, Ursula. Also, I’m not sure whether they have the right shade for you in this powder which is a shame! They need a broader range of shades at Maybelline. But you’re right, the eye and lip makeup is great!

  24. You’ve conviced me. I need this =) I am in fact looking for something similar, so this post came just in time 😉

    1. A few women have mentioned the MAC as being a similar powder, Bailey. I am so cheap, I haven’t spent a lot for setting powder except for a limited edition Estee Lauder mini-compact with translucent powder that I bought specifically for the compact.

  29. I have heard many great things about this powder. I loved when Maybelline had the dream wonder mousse so I think these are probably great too 🙂
