Last night was the monthly meeting of the book club I belong to. I usually make an effort to get a little dressed up. Although most of the women in the group don’t wear makeup, I look at it as an opportunity to do so. How nice to actually leave the house wearing makeup rather than wearing a full face of makeup to do chores around the house, lol.
I thought I’d share the look in order to talk about a few makeup products that I used that I’ve purchased or acquired over the past several months.
I got my hair recolored last week at Vidal Sassoon. Thankfully, Laurel my colorist used a new red rinse that suits me better over the permanent color. Last month, she used a crayon red rinse, and I thought it was a little too much. This one is bright but I like it, and as it fades, I think I’ll still like it.
Here’s the makeup I used. Some pieces are my tried and true, and others are new or newish.
Let’s go through what I used.
- Urban Decay Anti-aging Eye Primer: my tried and true eye primer. They’ve changed the packaging to include an applicator that I don’t need but I’m hoping they left the formula the same. I have a couple of months worth left in this older tube.
- butterLONDON Wink Eye Pencil in Union Jack Black: I used this pencil for tightlining my upper lashline. I like it. It’s very dark, soft, and it stays on quite well. It’s my second favorite after Lancome Drama Liqui-Pencil that I’ve misplaced, boo hoo.
- Smashbox Always Sharp Waterproof Kohl Liner in Royal (purple): I bought a single one of these several months ago in an olive green shade and I loved it. I managed to pick up a box of 5 or 6 colors on sale at Nordstrom. I adore them. I should do a full review. I use them primarily along my lower lashline.
- Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow in Heather, shade 30: I’m a fan of cream shadow for my dry eyelids. I picked this one up at Barney’s during the spring gift bag event. This cream shadow is just creamy enough. It goes on opaque, stays put and is very long-lasting over primer (it does quite well without primer too). It works well as a shadow on its own or as a base. I love Heather, a purple-gray shade. I used it all over my eyelids. I figure one shade of eyeshadow is enough for book club!
- Beauty Junkees All Over Shader Brush: I really love all the Beauty Junkees brushes I’ve used. I have to review the eye brush set I received several weeks ago. This brush is perfect for applying powder or cream shadow all over the eyelid. So soft, so smooth, just perfect. And such an affordable brush set. Stay tuned for my full review.
- Shiseido Lash Curler: My tried-and-true lash curler. It does a great job curling my straight lashes without crimping them or pulling them out. I love it.
- L’Oreal Infallible 24 Hour Lacquer Liner in Dark Slate: I’ve been singing the praises of this easy to apply, long wearing eye liner that a number of bloggers and readers recommended to me a few months ago. I just love how creamy and smooth it is and how that makes it so easy to apply with my Sonia Kashuk bent neck brush that I forgot to photograph for this post. And I love that it stays on.
- IT Cosmetics Super Hero Mascara: I love this mascara. It makes my lashes sooooooo long and it doesn’t clump on me. Although the tip of the wand is a little odd, it doesn’t bother me.
- Hourglass No. 28 Primer Serum: At the Sephora VIB coupon event this month, I met the Hourglass rep and he talked me into buying No. 28 Primer because it is more hydrating and better for mature skin than my usual Veil Mineral Primer. It gives me a smoother finish. So he was right, but I was glad he also gave me a deluxe sample of the Veil Mineral Primer that’s great for travel.
- Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation SPF 15: I love this foundation, and for some reason, I never did a full review on it. It is extremely lightweight, it’s just about full-coverage, and the shade, Sand, is just about a perfect color match for me. It wears very well, and I love it. Although I wish it had a higher SPF, I love it anyway.
- Beauty Junkees Flat Angled Kabuki Brush: My implements of choice for applying foundation are either a blending sponge or a flat angled kabuki brush. I am so impressed by this thick, soft, easy to use and to clean brush from Beauty Junkees. It makes foundation application a breeze. Again, stay tuned for a full review of this brush and its companions.
- Tarte Colored Clay Undereye CC/Color Corrector Concealer: I chose this color correcting under eye dark circle concealer several months ago as part of a post on concealers for Ulta. Boy, am I glad I got this! I love how this thick, peach colored cream concealer hides my dark circles. It’s just great!
- Amazing Cosmetics Perfection Stick in Fair: I cannot tell you how often I use this terrific concealer stick from Amazing Cosmetics. Though I also own their full coverage cream concealer in a tube, this little stick is so quick and easy to use that I use it to cover my dark spots that peak through my concealer just about everyday. Get one!
- Stila Convertible Color Dual Lip and Cheek Cream in Peony: I use this cream only as a blush. The shade Peony is great – it’s a browned peach that’s very natural looking. It stays on very well and it’s hydrating for my dry skin.
- Milani Color Statement Lipliner in Bordeaux, shade 12: Smooth, easy to apply, long lasting, affordable. I love all of Milani’s lipliner but this shade is gorgeous!
- butterLONDON Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayon in Ruby Murray: This shade is stunning! And it feels so good on my lips. Why don’t I wear it more often?
So my simple look took 16, actually 17, makeup products to put together, lol! But it took only about 10 minutes to do. And it made me feel good to look put together!
Have you used any of these?
What a great look! I would love to try some of these products. I received a plum eyeliner in one of my beauty bags/boxes and am scared to use it but after seeing how lovely it looks on you I may just give it a shot! Just out if curiosity what book did your club read? I’m an avid reader and always looking for a hood book. 🙂
I hope you will wear your plum eyeliner! I think it would look great along the lower lashline or even just the lower outer V area, and colored eyeliner is on trend right now. Do it! As far as books go, this time we read a “mystery” by an Italian writer that takes place in Venice. It was OK, but not great. My favorite book(s) that we read this year were the series “My Brilliant Friend” by Elena Ferrante. I read the first book and got hooked and read all four. I was sorry to see the series come to an end. She’s won a million literary prizes for it. Also, another book I enjoyed that we recently read is The Blood of Flowers, a novel about a young woman rug maker in Persia in the 17th century. If you like short stories, I recommend The Frangipani Hotel, a collection of stories about Vietnam written by an American young woman from Houston in the aftermath of her Fulbright Scholarship in Vietnam exploring her family history. The stories are wildy imaginative and a little offbeat. Do you belong to a book club, Laura? I read a lot on my own, but I’ve enjoyed discovering some books I may not have found on my own through the club.
You look great Allison! I like to have a reason to doll up too. Urban Decay and Too Faced Shadow Insurance are the eye primers I use most. I have a few others since I have thing for eye primers. lol
Thank you so much, Laura! I don’t go that many places these days where I get dressed up a bit so I take any opportunity to do it. Somehow red lipstick to the supermarket seems like a bit much, lol. I tried TF Shadow Insurance in the past (I think it was the yellow one?) but it migrated into my eyes & I wear contact lenses so I gave up on it. I love TF so I was surprised it didn’t work for me. My backups are Milani and I just got a sample from Elizabeth Mott in an ipsy bag and I like it too!
This is such a GORGEOUS FOTD, Allison. I love everything about this look, and that Burgundy lip is perfection!

Thank you so much, Helen! I need to find more places to wear Ruby Murray. It’s such a great lip color. The supermarket??
oh such a great look
you look amazing! I would love to try this one too

Thank you so much, Karlien! butterLONDON Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayons are incredible. They sell them on the butterLONDON website and at Ulta. I managed to pick up another one during heir 30% off + free shipping sale on the BL website a couple of months ago 🙂
You look so Great! I think it’s funny that I am not the only one who runs around the house doing chores with full face makeup on!! Plus I like to look decent when either the FedEx or UPS man show up – I mean they are both serious Hotties!!! LOL!!
I actually do agree with you on your hair, it looks awesome. It is so vibrant and shiny! I so wish I could pull off that color, but I have tried and look absolutely horrid in it. I have to try that gorgeous Smashbox liner. As usual Allison, you look Perfect!
Thank you! I’m glad I’m not the only one, Paula! My Fedex & UPS guys don’t ring the bell so I guess I don’t know what I’m missing 😉 Definitely take a look at the Smashbox liners. I am so happy with them, and that set I bought on sale at Nordstrom was sooooo worth it. I think it cost about $22 for 5 or 6 liners and that’s what I paid for one at Ulta a couple of months earlier. PS I’m heading to the post office now. So sorry. This was such a busy week.
I like the pop of purple you did on the lower lashline! I’ve heard good things about Smashbox’s pencil eyeliners (I’ve only tried the one that comes in the pot (which is great). I’ve always wanted to be part of a book club!

You should start a book club among your friends! Or if not, libraries often have them 🙂
Here I am thinking, what a pretty lipstick! And then it turns out I have it! Awesome.

I rarely do a single wash with powder eyeshadow, but I love a good creme or stick shadow for that. Something about the way it blends out over the eye makes it have enough dimension for me for a single-color look, I guess! Love the look, and the burgundy lipstick – I need to dig out my Ruby Murray! Those lip crayons are awesome.

I’ll do a single powder shadow on occasion, especially for something like book club or running errands, but I think you’re right that the cream shadow naturally has more dimension. And yes, find your Ruby Murray! I know it would look great on you too!
Love this lip color on you! That Bobbi Brown cream shadow sounds like a good formula. I’ve been loving cream shadows lately too.

Thank you, Amber! I just bought a second shade of the Bobbi Brown cream shadow because it’s a good formula and it’s opaque. I’m hoping the Ballet Pink one that I just bought will be opaque too. Two other cream shadows from other brands in the pink shade are sheer, and a waste of money.
I have not used any of those shades…yet, but you do look lovely for your book club meeting!! I love doing just mascara and lip gloss when I am doing chores or going out and about!! 🙂

You’re right: mascara and lip gloss are plenty for doing chores and running around town!
I remember using the Smashbox Always Sharp liner ages ago, the packaging did make it really handy whenever I wanted a super sharp line.
I love these Smashbox pencils. I’m sold!
I absolutely love that red lip on you. Peony was the first Stila Convertible Color I owned, when the company was first starting out. I still wear it from time to time.
Thank you, Rachel! I’m glad I found Ruby Murray in my stash. And I love the brownish-peach of Stila’s Peony. It’s a great neutral blush.
You look fabulous. I love that lip on you and I’m all about Milani Color Statement lip liners, they are gorgeous and so blendable and creamy.

I love this look on you, Allison! The blush color is my absolute favorite though, it’s the perfect shade of pinkish coral.
Yes, I love the Stila blush too. Peony has a neutral brown/coral look on me that’s just perfect with my coloring.
Great FOTD look! I am totally digging that L’Oreal gel liner. It’s my jam! I haven’t tried that Bobbi Brown foundation yet. In fact, I haven’t tried anything by Bobbie Brown, lol. Someday! I want to try the gel liner. Everytime I ask about the best of the best gel liner, I keep hearing Bobbie Brown. 😉

I haven’t tried the Bobbi Brown gel liner, but I’m so happy with the L’Oreal gel liner that I’m not in a hurry to try something new. Bobbi Brown seems like an underutilized brand. I love the makeup I’ve tried from that brand. In fact, I just ordered another cream eye shadow from Bobbi Brown during the Macy’s sale over the weekend.
A few of these products are favorites of mine! That Tarte concealer was a favorite of mine and I’ve thought about pulling it out again recently.
