Gabriel Lipstick: Natural, Mineral-Based, Gluten-Free

Oops, wrong post published this morning. Here’s the right one!

Though I haven’t given up my regular makeup brands, I have been trying to try more organic makeup and skincare products. Products that I apply all over my body and on my lips are the ones that I start to worry about most.

A friend asked a question on the Never Say Die Beauty Facebook page about whether a particular product was hypoallergenic. I have found out that since companies do not have to prove that their products are hypoallergenic, the term is meaningless. She mentioned that she was “allergic” to or had adverse reactions to ingredients in lipsticks. I have no idea whether this will make a difference for her since she doesn’t know which ingredients in lipstick she has a problem with. At any rate, I suggested maybe she should try an organic lipstick.

I decided to put my money where my mouth is, literally. I stopped at Whole Foods today to pick up some of their delicious sausages, and I was mysteriously drawn to the personal care and beauty aisle. There was a sign that makeup was 25% off. Also, there was a coupon for $3.00 additional off of the brand that got my attention. Yes!

I’ve never heard of Gabriel Cosmetics. The company is based in Washington state, and the lipstick is made in the U.S. There was a wide variety of lipsticks to choose from: a couple of mattes, a couple of sheers, and the rest were satin finish. There seemed to be about 20 or so shades (on the Gabriel Cosmetics website, there are 26 shades).  I tried about six of the testers on my hand, and there were lots I could have purchased. I decided to go for something summery. I was going to try orange, the hot shade of the summer, but they didn’t have a real orange.

So I went for Rosewood, a nude-pink shade with a satin finish that’s almost matte.

It’s not at all drying, but it’s not particularly hydrating. It was just fine. I was surprised that it has stayed on for about 5 hours.

Here are swatches. The shade looks rather different in sunshine (peach) and in cooler light (pink):

Gabriel Cosmetics Lipstick Rosewood This is how the company describes the lipsticks:

  • Fabulous lip color formulated with natural waxes, emollients and other plant derived conditioning ingredients including Jojoba Oil, Aloe Vera and Bisabolol to seal in moisture and protect lips from environmental aggressions. Made from a petrochemical-free base of Candelilla Wax. Feather resistant formula provides long lasting color and a smooth polished finish. PABA-free.

Gabriel lipsticks are mineral-based, gluten-free, vegan, and cruelty-free. They display the Leaping Bunny logo on the recyclable packaging. The black plastic tube with the gold plastic ring with the brand name is recyclable.

The regular price at Whole Foods for the lipstick was $16.99, and with the coupon and sale I paid a little over $9. Woohoo! It’s available at Amazon, on gabrielcosmeticsinc.com, and on some other websites like veganstore.com and luckyvitamin.com.

I really like this lipstick as well as the Rosewood shade. I think it’s a great everyday lipstick that I don’t have to worry about wearing. What’s your favorite better-for-you lipstick?

That’s a great colour on you. There are rumours about a Whole Foods coming to my metro area, and I hope they’re true because I would love easier access to more products like this.

    1. I hope it’s true, Rach. Whole Foods is some distance from me, and I can’t shop there all the time but for meats and a few other items, it’s so worth paying more. The makeup and beauty department is such fun to explore!

  28. What a pretty shade that looks lovely on you. TBH I don’t think I have a lip product that is necessarily “good for me”. I am sure if I raid my stash I’d find one but I am normally not wearing a lippie because my lips are quite pigmented on their own.
