Getting Reacquainted with Today’s Avon Skincare

It’s been a long time since I have had a chance to try new skincare products from Avon though I still am a devotee of some products from Anew and of course Skin So Soft, the mosquito repellant and skin oil whose scent I love. Avon has put a lot of money into research and development over the years, and their skincare products are known as being top notch.

I received two moisturizers from the Avon NutraEffects Hydration skincare line:

  • Avon NutraEffects Active Seed Complex Hydration Day Cream SPF 15
  • Avon NutraEffects Active Seed Complex Hydration Gel Night Cream.

The Hydration line of products from Avon were designed for normal to dry skin to protect it from dehydration due to environmental stressors like sun, wind and dry air from weather or indoor heating/cooling. Here’s a short video with info on the Hydration line and ingredients:

As you know, I have super dry skin so I’m looking for hydration in every single thing I put on my face. Oil-free Avon NutraEffects Active Seed Complex Hydration Day Cream SPF 15 provides hydration and protection from environmental effects with powerful chia seeds. I’ve used chia seed oil and other chia seed products in the past, and I’ve had good results. Rich in antioxidants, chia seeds can repel environmental damage as well as hold up to 12 times their weight in water. They act as moisture magnets. In fact, Hydration Day Cream has been formulated to deliver nutrients within multiple layers of the skin and to keep working for 48 hours.

Even though NutraEffects Active Seed Complex Hydration Day Cream is oil-free, it is a remarkably rich and protective cream. It feels smooth and velvety on my skin. It is not at all greasy, and it is absorbed quickly. My skin feels nourished when and after I use it. It is recommended for normal to dry skin or mature skin.

Because it comes in a jar (this rich cream wouldn’t work in a pump), I apply it using a scoop to keep it germ-free. Frankly, I don’t mind creams in jars. I don’t leave the top off more than a couple of seconds.

As much as I enjoy using this rich cream on my dry skin, the only thing I would change is the floral scent. Fortunately, the scent disappears about a minute or two after I apply it. Yay!

The Day Cream has SPF 15, and at first, I was disappointed, wishing it had at least SPF 30. But I read more about sunscreen protection online, and I learned that a higher SPF protects against a slightly higher percentage of UVB rays. Even SPF 50 only protects against a slightly higher percentage than SPF 15. This is how the Skin Cancer Foundation explained it:

“Most sunscreens with an SPF of 15 or higher do an excellent job of protecting against UVB. SPF — or Sun Protection Factor — is a measure of a sunscreen’s ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. Here’s how it works: If it takes 20 minutes for your unprotected skin to start turning red, using an SPF 15 sunscreen theoretically prevents reddening 15 times longer — about five hours…Another way to look at it is in terms of percentages: SPF 15 filters out approximately 93 percent of all incoming UVB rays. SPF 30 keeps out 97 percent and SPF 50 keeps out 98 percent.”

Interesting, right?

NutraEffects Active Seed Complex Hydration Day Cream SPF 15 contains 1.7 oz./50 g and is affordably priced at $18.

Ingredients: WATER, GLYCERIN, ETHYLHEXYL METHOXYCINNAMATE, HOMOSALATE, PROPANEDIOL, DIMETHICONE, BUTYL METHOXYDIBENZOYLMETHANE, HYDROGENATED POLYISOBUTENE, HYDROXYETHYL UREA, BENZOPHENONE-3, LAURYL LACTATE, CETEARYL ALCOHOL, SILICA, PEG-100 STEARATE, PENTYLENE GLYCOL, FRAGRANCE, PHENOXYETHANOL, ACRYLATES/C10-30 ALKYL ACRYLATE CROSSPOLYMER, CETEARETH-20, HYDROXYETHYL ACRYLATE/SODIUM ACRYLOYLDIMETHYL TAURATE COPOLYMER, CARBOMER, CHLORPHENESIN, DISODIUM EDTA, ISOHEXADECANE, ETHYLENE/PROPYLENE/STYRENE COPOLYMER, UREA, CHOLESTEROL, DILAURYL THIODIPROPIONATE, DIMETHICONE CROSSPOLYMER, PHYTOL, SODIUM HYDROXIDE, XANTHAN GUM, SODIUM DEHYDROACETATE, SODIUM PCA, POLYSORBATE 60, PANTHENOL, BORON NITRIDE, SODIUM HYALURONATE, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII (SHEA) BUTTER, BUTYLENE/ETHYLENE/STYRENE COPOLYMER, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED EXTRACT, CEREUS GRANDIFLORUS (CACTUS) FLOWER EXTRACT, SALVIA HISPANICA SEED EXTRACT, PELVETIA CANALICULATA EXTRACT

OK, you know I adore gel creams, and not surprisingly, I adore Avon NutraEffects Active Seed Complex Hydration Gel Night Cream! The consistency of the gel cream is just fabulous. It is so light but so rich, both at the same time. How can that happen? Wonderfully, it does  🙂  To me, the Gel Night Cream feels like a sleeping mask. I use it as the final step over the several essences and serums that I use at night, and it is perfection. Just the right weight. And super fast absorbing. In fact, I would say that the gel cream would be fine for most skin types: dry, combination, mature or young skin.

Hydration Gel Night Cream is formulated with similar nutrients and to work the same way as the Day Cream: with ingredients from chia seeds that work for 48 hours within the layers of the skin. So using both gives me a double whammy in a good way!

The Gel Night Cream also has a floral scent that I could do without, but it fades even faster than the day cream’s scent so it’s OK. (Nevertheless, I wish they would make their moisturizers unscented!)

Also like the Day Cream, the Avon NutraEffects Active Seed Complex Hydration Gel Night Cream contains 1.7 oz./50 g and is priced at $18.

Ingredients: WATER, GLYCERIN, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, PEG-8, DIMETHICONE, BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII (SHEA) BUTTER, CARBOMER, PEG-20 METHYL GLUCOSE SESQUISTEARATE, 1,2-HEXANEDIOL, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, SODIUM HYDROXIDE, DISODIUM EDTA, FRAGRANCE, HYDROXYETHYL ACRYLATE/SODIUM ACRYLOYLDIMETHYL TAURATE COPOLYMER, STEARDIMONIUM HYDROXYPROPYL PANTHENYL PEG-7 DIMETHICONE PHOSPHATE CHLORIDE, ISOHEXADECANE, DIMETHICONE CROSSPOLYMER, POLYSORBATE 60, PANTHENOL, SODIUM HYALURONATE, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, PHOSPHORIC ACID, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED EXTRACT, SALVIA HISPANICA SEED EXTRACT, CEREUS GRANDIFLORUS (CACTUS) FLOWER EXTRACT, PELVETIA CANALICULATA EXTRACT

Both Day Cream and Gel Night Cream contain NO gluten, parabens, phthalates, or dyes. They are hypoallergenic, dermatologist-tested, and safe for sensitive skin. In fact, I was reading a review from a young user with psoriasis who loves the Hydration line, and a mom who uses the line on her daughter’s skin who has eczema. It must be really gentle!

I’m old enough to remember when you had to buy Avon products through an Avon lady. You still can! If you don’t have an Avon representative, you can find one in your area. Sometimes I buy from an Avon rep who comes to the Topsfield Fair in the fall, and I stock up on Avon products that I use. But if you don’t have a rep, it’s still so easy. Just order online!

And right now, I noticed there’s a 2 products for $30 offer. That’s a savings of $6. Not bad at all!

What have you tried from Avon lately?

  1. YAY! You already know I’m a fan of Avon and I swear that they have come so far in the past 2-3 years so I’m glad that you enjoyed these too. I passed these to my colleague to try and she was really impressed by them too. She said she couldn’t believe Avon actually made such wonderful creams and these nourished her skin so well. She’s in her 50s and freaking love this Hydration line.

    1. Yes, I am very impressed! Just wish they’d lose the floral scent. These are terrific moisturizers. The Day Cream is definitely best for an older target audience as you mention, but the Gel Night Cream is so lightweight and lovely, anyone of any age could wear it!

  2. These both sound quite interesting! That rich cream looks so luxe! I have not tried any Avon skincare products, but I have tried some of their makeup. Avon certainly has changed with the times!

    1. The floral scent on these definitely is not for you. I’m usually OK with scents, but I wish these were unscented. Fortunately, it doesn’t last long especially with the gel cream, and I love the gel cream.

    1. These are not for you, Judy, if you have oily skin. They’re seriously hydrating. But surprisingly, they are for people with sensitive skin and issues like psoriasis and eczema. I have one of the mascaras to review, but I’d love to try the lipsticks!

    1. Unfortunately, Leanie, I don’t think Avon is cruelty-free. I believe they sell in China. I haven’t tried their body lotion, but though I don’t like facial skincare with a scent if I have a choice, I love scented body lotions. Maybe they have something new with a good scent.

  17. I haven’t tried any of Avon’s skin care before!
