Giveaway: em Michelle Phan Tokyo Plums Palette

Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me…

bdaycake

It’s my birthday today, so what better day to start a giveaway on my blog than with a gift for one of you! And because spring looks like it may finally be on its way, I’d like to give away something that is, well, spring-y. 🙂

I Bought This

Do you know Michelle Phan? She’s a young woman who started out in 2005 as a beauty blogger who did makeup tutorials. In 2007, she began vlogging on YouTube and she became a sensation. She was associated with Lancome, and next she started em Cosmetics in conjunction with L’Oreal. In addition, she started a monthly makeup subscription company that is now called ipsy, the monthly service that I love!

Always at the forefront, Michelle Phan recently appeared in a commercial for Dr. Pepper. She’s one of the unique personalities who personifies the Dr. Pepper brand. Have you seen her in the spot? I think she’s pretty darn cute and a good fit for Dr. Pepper. I know not everyone’s on board with it, but take a look and let me know what you think 😉

And Michelle Phan is everywhere these days. Last night while I was watching Mad Men, she was in a brand new commercial for YouTube. She has become quite the brand. But back to makeup.

em Cosmetics has a broad selection of palettes: eye, cheeks, lips, face. There’s even a collection of Life Palettes that have “everything” in a choice of shade selections in one palette.

I got to try a couple of em Cosmetics makeup products through my ipsy subscription, and I liked what I tried. So I decided to buy an eye shadow palette. Boy, was it difficult to choose because there were so many options! I think I read every single review on each shadow palette on the website before I finally decided on the Tokyo Plums palette. And I liked it so much, I bought a second one to give away.

The compact is 3″ x 3.5″ so it’s small enough to fit in a purse, and it’s great for travel. It’s  white surrounded by a heavy clear plastic outer covering with “handwritten” inspiring words on the cover. Funny, I can’t read them on the compact but I can in the photo, lol!

Tokyo Plums has six pans: 3 small, 2 medium and one large in peach and plum shades from light to dark, shimmers and mattes.

Specifically, the shades are:

  • lower left: pale peach shimmer
  • mid left: lilac shimmer
  • upper left: peach matte
  • center: plum matte
  • upper right: deep purple shimmer
  • lower right: prune (purple/brown) matte

The shades on the left are for highlighting and contouring. The big one in the middle for all-over color. The dark shades can be used as shadows or eyeliner. But you can do your own thing.

Some of you may know that I usually wear matte shadows, but I do love the three shimmer shadows in this palette. They’re subtle. The light peach shade and the lilac shade have gold shimmer, and the deep purple has a bit of deep bronzy-purple shimmer. Here are the swatches on my “fair” skin:

And here they are swatched by the folks at em Cosmetics on “medium” and “dark” skin. Not surprisingly, they did a much better job swatching than I did!

What’s great about the Tokyo Plums palette is that it’s neutral: either warm and cool. So as you can see from the swatches anyone can wear it. I love plum and peach shades with brown eyes but also with blue or green eyes. And if you have violet Liz Taylor eyes, even better.

Inside there’s a big mirror and two usable travel brushes, one of which is doubled-sided and includes a slant tip brush.

The shades are very creamy and easy to blend. They feel so soft. Love ’em. And I think the colors in this palette are versatile, neutral, good for day or night. Here are a couple of looks I did: the first with peach in the inner corners and the second with plum across the entire lid and deep purple in the outer corner for a darker look.

This is so thoughtful of you to give us a gift on YOUR birthday. This is the first em cosmetics product I have seen and it looks fabulous. I just joined Ipsy so I have not received any of her products yet. I would love to win this palette b/c 1) I have only one palette in my stash and 2) the colors (swatches) look incredible. I would use by trying to duplicate that exact eye look (credit, em cosmetics).

    1. Allison says:

Thank you, KAPP, for the bday wishes and the song, lol. Tokyo Plums is a very pretty palette. Hopefully, now that you’ve joined ipsy you’ll get to try some of the em Cosmetics products. They’re great. (I still haven’t received my ipsy bag this month, have you???) Thanks for entering the giveaway and good luck 🙂

Happy Birthday Allison! This palette looks gorgeous- definitely my types of colours. And I agree that it would be great for travel. This and my single of UD Half Baked, and I’d be good to go for a couple weeks I think! I’d probably wear the lighter colours on their own as a wash, or maybe pair two for a little additional highlight. I’d wear the darker ones with Half Baked because I just love purple and gold together. 🙂

    1. Allison says:

That sounds gorgeous, Rach! I love purple and gold together too. So glad you entered. Good luck 🙂

Happy Birthday to the lovely Beauty Expert 🙂 The plum eye shadows are perfect for your eye color, Allison! I would use the Tokyo Plums Palette to create a smoky eye. Something unexpected and different from the usual gray or dark brown shades. Plus I think those shades of plum would also look amazing with my eye color. Hint hint

    1. Allison says:

Thank you so much, Sybille! I know you’re a violet person, and these colors would be great for a smoky eye on you. I’ve got my fingers crossed for you! Good luck 🙂

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! I’d give this plum palette to my daughter, who also has a birthday today, and who looks much better in purple makeup than I do.

  11. Julie B. says:

    Happy Birthday!
Love the pretty colors in this palette. Everything I have is so oriented towards neturals and nudes, that I would love to change my look and brighten up my eyes with this palette.

    1. Allison says:

This palette seems to me to be a twist on nudes. I was tired of beiges and browns. These peaches and purples are neutral-ish but still different in my opinion, Julie. Thanks for the bday wish, thanks for entering and good luck!

I’m not familiar with Aramex, Dima. How does it work? I feel so badly about limiting it to US residents. But even shipping to Canada was expensive. I won an international giveaway, and it cost more than $40 for postage to the US. Unfortunately, since my blog doesn’t make any money, I have to limit my expenses. I am so sorry, Dima.

  28. Kelly Commerford says:

I love the colors! I would definitely wear these colors on a date night!

    1. Allison says:

  30. KAPP902 says:

you and I got the same things in our ipsy bag except I got the Cailyn and was really disappointed in the product…goes on very dry and the color was ugly…but i added lip balm below and lip gloss on top and it was nicer. all in all i really like this subscription b/c I get to try brands i’ve never heard of before. ~be well, Kim

    1. Allison says:

Oh, I’m sorry the Cailyn was disappointing, Kim 🙁 I should be happy I got to try the Mary Kay gloss! Though it looks like it’s full color, it’s really quite sheer but still pretty and so comfortable to wear.

  31. Jennifer F says:

    Happy birthday!
I would the darkest color as a winged liner and the peach matte for all over for a modern but retro inspired look.

    1. Allison says:

What a great look that would be, Jennifer! Thanks for the bday wishes and for entering! Good luck 🙂

  32. Tonya (Taj Kingston) says:

These colors will be great for work-and will go well with my green eyes!

    1. Allison says:

Gorgeous with green eyes, Tonya! Thanks for entering and good luck!

  33. Happy birthday! You are so beautiful!

I think that palette would look great to create a nice, smoky eye! It reminds me of the Pantone color of the year, Radiant Orchid! What better way to celebrate the color of the year than with this beautiful palette of purples? And, I love doing smokey eyes, so this would be a nice, flirty, fun, colorful smokey eye that is different from the normal ‘blacked out’ eye! XoXo

    1. Allison says:

Thank you, Jennifer! You get extra points for the compliment, lol 😉 Yes, the violet on the left side does remind me of Radiant Orchid but maybe with a little less pink in it. It’s such a pretty palette, and you could do a gorgeous smoky eye!! Thank you for entering and good luck!

  34. Zoey says:

I love the look you created! I would use it to recreate that look!

    1. Allison says:

Thanks, Zoey! I did one with the large purple shade on the lid with darker in the crease and a lighter look with matte peach in the inner corner, lilac in the mid eyelid and big purple pan in the outer corner and crease, but I didn’t do an unclose photo of that one, unfortunately. I like ’em both. Thanks for entering and good luck!

  35. Megan H says:

  37. Happy Birthday! Wishes from your reader 🙂
Em Tokyo Plums palette is perfect for my makeup practice. I would like to invent looks for this palette… smoky eyes, or even for spring make up that would be perfect! 🙂

    1. Thank you so much, Hazel Victoria! It is an adorable palette. I’m sure you’d find it useful for pretty spring looks and smoky eyes 🙂 Thanks for entering and good luck!

  38. Happy birthday!!! Those shadows are absolutely beautiful – I have a tendency to repeat the exact same eye look every day, but these would make it really easy (and fun!) to switch it up with different colors, combos and looks.

    1. I think you’re right, Jennifer! Sometimes a palette that’s just the right size does give you more options than a smaller one or a larger one where there are too many choices! Thanks for entering my giveaway and good luck 🙂

  39. Jenny Lawler says:

This would be great for creating a smoky eye look.

    1. I agree, Jenny! And several different smoky eye looks, too. Thanks for entering and good luck!

  40. Hello! Everyone has already posted really good comments. My comment is the lilac purple on the model’s arm looks more like a bruise than a good make up choice color.
I personally like plum wine and pink colors.

    1. Well, I guess you could say that the prune matte shade swatched on my arm does look like a bruise, Tamara. I didn’t do that greatest job swatching them, I’m afraid! At any rate, thanks for entering and good luck 😉

  41. Danielle D says:

Happy Birthday! I would use it to brighten my eyes.

    1. I think the peach and lilac shades would be great for brightening. Thanks for entering, Danielle, and good luck!

  42. Christy Peeples DuBois says:

If I were to win I would give this to my daughter who is wonderful with eye shadows. She would be over joyed.
