As some of you know, I’m a huge fan of gel moisturizers. I love the lightweight feel as well as the fact that they don’t clog my pores or create blackheads like traditional, creamy moisturizers can.
A new one came my way almost two months ago. Since I can sometimes be fickle about new products — loving them at first and then changing my mind, I decided to give this one a real, long test drive. Hada Labo Tokyo Skin Plumping Gel Cream.
I love this moisturizer. It has completely replaced the other moisturizers that I was using before (although every now and then, I use them for old times’ sake.) It’s very gentle, and I find it soothing to my sensitive skin. Recently, my skin felt almost burnt from using a beauty sponge that was too rough for me. Hada Labo gel was one of the few things I could put on my face. Also, the not-quite-clear, slightly milky gel is fragrance-free which is a plus. I have two other gel cream brands that I used, but they both had a scent, and I definitely prefer fragrance-free moisturizer.
In addition to the rather unique gel form, Hada Labo Tokyo Skin Plumping Cream contains super hyaluronic acid: three versions actually. HA is a humectant that encourages moisture to go into the skin, and it creates a moisture locking shield to help preserve skin’s optimum moisture balance. I also use Hada Labo Tokyo Anti-aging Hydrator, a Hyaluronic Acid serum that I reviewed a while back here, so I’m getting lots of HA.
I apply moisturizer before using BB or CC cream, even though you technically don’t have to. Hado Labo Skin Plumping Cream is perfect for under foundation products because it’s so lightweight. I don’t feel like I’m wearing tons of stuff on my face. All it takes is a pea-sized amount to moisturize my face and neck. And the dimethicone helps make my skin feel very smooth.
The packaging is lovely. It comes in a box with the pretty cherry blossom motif that is Hada Labo’s signature. And the product itself comes in a modern looking clear cube with a silver top. I guess the only downside is that it comes in a jar, rather than a pump.
Hada Labo Tokyo Skin Plumping Gel Cream is sold at Ulta, walgreens.com, drugstore.com, and Amazon. The price is $24.99 for 1.76 oz. I use it twice a day, I’ve had it for two months, and I’ve still got lots more left in the jar. I stopped in at Ulta today, and I discovered that Hada Labo Tokyo products are buy one, get one 50% off till January 25, 2014. So if you’re thinking about trying, say the Anti-aging Hydrator Serum and the Gel Cream, you’d get half of the serum that’s $17.99. A good deal!

Me, too, Sybille! When I received these products, I thought they were sold at Nordstrom or Sephora because they are such lovely looking products. Very high-end look. I really love them both. I like that the Hada Labo Tokyo gel is fragrance-free. I’m afraid this one has replaced my former fave, Lierac, because I prefer fragrance-free on my face!

OMG, I hope you do like it, Melanie! For me, gels are lightweight but still moisturizing for my dry skin. And they are great under foundation or BB/CC cream. And the best thing is they don’t create blackheads or milia like heavy creams can on me. Definitely let me know what you think 🙂

That’s great, Monica! I’m glad you found it. I also reviewed the Anti-aging Hydrator Serum at the end of November. It’s a triple hyaluronic acid serum and it has some other goodies in it too.
