Hask Kalahari Melon Oil Color Protection Shampoo & Conditioner: First Impression

When I purchased from Ulta online during their 21 Days of Beauty, they sent along a few samples. Among them was a Hask shampoo and conditioner duo, packets with just enough for one use. Hask has a broad product range: the ones I received were the Kalahari Melon Oil Color Protection Shampoo and Conditioner with Color Shield Complex. I was immediately intrigued because they advertised “color shield complex”, and I’m always looking for ways to protect my bright red color from fading by washing and also from the sun.

Both products had a light, slightly fruity/melony scent that was barely discernible while using them and that didn’t linger in my hair. The shampoo created plenty of lather, and it rinsed clean. I like a bit of a squeak, but this was very squeaky. In fact, I was concerned that my hair may have been stripped of all its oil. I was happy to follow up with the medium-weight conditioner. I left it on extra long before rinsing it out, hoping it would replace some of what may have been taken out of my hair with the shampoo.

Afterwards, I used my usual Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle Leave-In Conditioner. Then I styled my hair with my blow dryer and flat iron. My hair looked pretty good, though a little fly-away. It felt soft, but not nearly as soft as with other shampoo and conditioner duos I’ve used lately.

I wash my hair every 4 days, but truth be told, I could have washed my hair on day 3 if I had had the time. It is day 4, and my hair needs washing badly.

Would I purchase Hask Kalahari Melon Oil Shampoo & Conditioner? Sadly no. I had been eager to try this brand, but this particular duo didn’t work as well for me as other haircare brands. As I mentioned earlier, Hask has a broad product range so I am willing to try some of their other shampoo and conditioners to see if they work better for me. Hask is an affordable brand so it would be great to find products that suit my hair.

Hask has no sulfates or parabens. It’s cruelty-free. It’s sold at Ulta Beauty and lots of other retailers. The retail price is $5.99 each though it’s available in the $4 range as you’ll notice below.

Have you tried Hask Kalahari Melon Oil Shampoo & Conditioner? What were your results like? Have you had good luck with any other Hask products I should try?

It’s not easy finding a great shampoo and conditioner at an affordable price point,I rely strongly on hair masques and leave in conditioners.I used a Hask hair mask that came as a sample a while back and liked it well enough(although I never bought one). You look great in the picture Allison, what lipstick are you wearing? It definitely suits you!Have a great day! 🙂

  2. Thank you, Laura, for taking the time to comment about your experiences searching for haircare. I’ve been wanting to try Hask for ages so I was glad to get to try out this duo. I wish I had been blown away by them coz the price point is sooooo good. But I get much better results with StriVectin, the new Darshana, and the Oribe I tried a couple of weeks ago. I think I’d rather pay more for products that allow my hair to look good for a couple of days longer so I don’t have to wash it as often. The lipstick is brand new from Mirabella. I just received it last week along with three new eye shadows. I hope to review them next week. The lipstick is a matte that I can wear with no problem at all, and the shade is great for fall and the holidays. I wish I could find a salon or spa in my area that sells Mirabella because their waterproof mascara is my favorite too, and I’d love to save the shipping!

  3. It is definitely difficult to find affordable shampoos and conditioners that aren’t stripping. I find this particularly difficult because I have naturally curly hair that is prone to being on the dry side, and I color my hair periodically– so I rely on nourishing shampoos and conditioners that are neither stripping, nor prone to drying out the hair and scalp. Too bad these two didn’t work for you!

    1. You’re right, Helen. I honestly can’t remember what affordable shampoo I used before I started blogging! I was happy to get to try out this duo, but fortunately I still have more StriVectin, Darshana, Mitch Stone that’ll keep me for many months to come!

  4. I have yet to try this range from HASK but I like the Argan oil and Charcoal range from them but you and me have different needs for haircare. I’m tempted to try Living Proof until I saw the price at my drugstore recently….I think I will stick to cheaper options for now. LOL!

    1. I know what you mean about the price for Living Proof. I buy it when Ulta or Sephora has their 20% off sales. LP had contacted me, had me fill out a stats form, and then I never heard back from them 🙁

    1. Thank you, Courtney! I don’t think this shampoo/conditioner was the best, but my colorist did a good job on juicing up my color a couple of weeks ago 🙂

  5. I’ve always been interested in this line. Sorry to hear it didn’t quite work out for you!

    1. Maybe it was just my hair, Julie. I’ve been dying to try Hask, but the shampoo seemed to strip my hair and the conditioner wasn’t hydrating enough to fix it. I was surprised that my hair felt like it needed to be washed after only 2 days. Just not right for me. Hask has so many different lines, I’m sure I’ll try another one at some point. You don’t color your hair so you wouldn’t use this particular duo. I think it’s worth it to try another!

  6. Your hair looks beautiful so it’s too bad that this was a disappointment.

    1. Marcia, I keep wondering if I hadn’t been using so many high-end haircare products lately, if I’d feel this way, but I think I would. Unfortunately, the shampoo seemed to strip my hair and the conditioner wasn’t hydrating enough to replace what was taken out. But then, I wonder why my hair needed to be washed after only two days? Oh well. I might try another of the Hask SKUs one of these days. Maybe melon oil wasn’t right for me?

  7. Oh darn! I hate it when you have high hopes for a brand and it’s a let down. If anything, their products should’ve been super moisturizing along with preserving your color. ugh

    1. Yes, I’ve been wanting to try Hask haircare for ages. However, I may give another set of their shampoo & conditioner a try – they have so many different formulas. Maybe melon oil just isn’t for me!

  8. I haven’t tried this yet. I am very careful with products that I use for my hair because I spend so much on hair color and touch ups. I wash my hair every 3 or 4 days but right now, I am extending it to 6 days because I just colored it blonde. I love your red hair, not too many people can rock that color

    1. Wow, 6 days! Not sure I could go that long, but I completely agree about the expense of maintaining color-treated hair. I liked the idea of “color shield” in this haircare duo. Disappointed that it seemed too drying for my dry hair, and that it didn’t last as long as I usually expect from a shampoo/conditioner.

  9. Hask has such a versatile range of hair care! I’ve loved the ones I’ve tried!

    1. That’s good to know, Babi. I’m sure I’ll try a different Hask line in the future and see if they work better for me.

  10. Too bad it didn’t work for you, I’ve heard great things about Hask, but not everything is for everyone 🙂

    1. Who knows, it could be my hair right now? I’ll try another line from Hask at some point.

  11. I like everything I’ve tried from Hask so far!

    1. That’s good to hear. Probably in the future, I’ll try one of the other Hask product lines – they seem to have so many

  12. I can’t wait to try out that HASK mask for my hair!! Your hair looks very pretty by the way!! 🙂

    1. Actually, this wasn’t a mask it was shampoo and conditioner. Thanks for the compliment. I wish I had like this duo more, but I’ll try another line from Hask in the future and see if I like them better.

  13. Oh man… I really enjoyed this line when I used it at the beginning of the year, it really helped prolong my red hair. It’s a bummer that it didn’t help with your color or do as you thought it would. I really like the mask, but I think overall my favorite Hask Line will always be Coconut and then the Bamboo

    1. Thank you, Honey, for the recommendations! I have always wanted to try Hask haircare so I was excited to try the samples I got from Ulta. There was only enough to use them once so this was “first impressions”. Unfortunately, the shampoo made my hair so squeaky clean that it felt stripped, and the conditioner was just meh. I have no idea if it helped my color because I only got to use it once. I’d like to try some of their other lines, so maybe Coconut and Bamboo will be the next ones I try!

  14. Angel says:

    Absolutely awesome #😊 product.

    1. Glad it worked for you, Angel! Not hydrating enough for my color-treated hair. I’ll find another HASK duo that suits me better one of these days
