Over the last few months, I have really gotten into aromatherapy. I have no idea whether it really “works” for me or not, but I am a fragrance junkie, and I enjoy the scents. Certain scents like lavender or lavender blends are definitely relaxing and soothing for me. I enjoy orange or citrus scent because they smell so good and cheerful. I don’t know if other herbal scents really sharpen my intellect or my memory, but I enjoy them just as attractive or interesting scents.
Aromatherapy Necklace
A zillion years ago when I first saw the movie, Rosemary’s Baby (did you see it? if you haven’t, you really should!), I remember that Rosemary (aka Mia Farrow) was given a necklace to wear during her pregnancy that contained the fictitious tannis root, a made-up herb that had a pungent smell and devilish properties.
The necklace has always appealed to me, so when I found out that there were aromatherapy versions, I had to have one (though mine is not a replica).
I went to Etsy and Amazon to look, and I discovered that Amazon had the best variety. As you may know, I love hearts, so I decided on the Heart Lava Stone Aromatherapy Pendant Necklace priced at about $10.
It has a sturdy clasp opening.
It came with a removable black lava ball inside that absorbs essential oil.
I don’t know if it’s possible to really wash the scent out of the lava ball (some websites say to soak it in dish liquid), but on Amazon, the lava balls are sold very inexpensively.
I love the Heart Lava Stone Aromatherapy Pendant silvertone necklace. I have Amazon Prime so I got free shipping and it arrived in two days. It’s definitely more than worth the price. It’s both sturdy and attractive.
BC Essentials
Since I have only the one lava ball right now, I wanted to choose wisely my first essential oil to try it out. I went through the aromatherapy essential oils that I own, and I wasn’t sure which one or ones I would want to wear. Yesterday while Jeff was away for the weekend visiting his older daughter in Atlanta, I decided to go to Newburyport, a seaside town with cute touristy shops about 30 miles away and get an early start on holiday shopping. I actually bought 3 holiday gifts and one birthday gift so I thought I did pretty well. While I was in one store that sold women’s clothing, accessories and home decor, I noticed a display of essential oils. I tried a few, and I ended up splurging on one from BC Essentials, essential oils handmade by an artisan in the next town.
The essential oil blend I chose is called Intrigue, and I think it’s aptly named. To me, it smells like a combination of some kind of cherry cocktail mixed with cigar smoke. I know, that doesn’t sound very appealing, lol! But somehow it works. I looked up the ingredients when I got home, and I was surprised to find out that it is a combination of vetiver and vanilla – I never would have guessed it! Vetiver is a somewhat masculine scent, related to lemongrass, described as earthy, balsamy-woody (the cigar smoke?), and vanilla is vanilla. Don’t know how I got cherry cocktail and cigar smoke, but there you go.
I haven’t diffused Intrigue yet, but I decided it was just the thing for my aromatherapy necklace. I dropped a couple of drops from the orifice reducer (the plastic top that’s an alternative to a traditional dropper) onto the lava ball with a napkin underneath since a bit of the oil spilled over. The ball seemed a little oily afterwards so I’m waiting a day before I wear it as I don’t want to stain my clothes.
There were two other scents from BC Essentials that I was interested in trying another time: Cinnfully-Vanilla (a blend of cinnamon and vanilla) and Dreamsicle (blend of vanilla and orange essential oils). Although I’m big on vanilla, there are lots of other non-vanilla choices. Each handmade scent is $16 for 0.5 fl.oz./15 ml, so I consider them sort of a splurge (though I know that some essential oils are $30+!). Check out Bev’s BC Essentials website. In addition to natural essential oils, she makes room diffusers (the kind with sticks) and diffuser oil as well as natural body and face oils and lotions.
Have you tried aromatherapy jewelry? Have you seen Rosemary’s Baby?
🙋🏻☕️☕️This is so beautiful. Another tip……you can spray your favorite cologne or perfume on the lava stone. Have a great day. 😍 Prayers 🙏🏻 for our friends in Texas & Florida.
That’s a great tip, DiEtta!! But question for you: have you been able to successfully clean the lava stone, and if so, what did you use?? xoxo
I will soak it in distilled water and scrub with a soft brush then let it sit in the sunlight to dry.
Thank you! I’ll try it
OMG, the Rosemary’s Baby picture, and the fact that these amulets are strikingly similar is such a clever reference! That was such a truly horrifying, and fantastic, movie!

I loved that movie too, Helen, for Ruth Gordon’s performance and for helping me discover John Cassavettes. One of my all-time faves. So glad that you’re a fan!
Rosemary’s Baby – and the original The Omen – are two of the movies that always scare the stuffings out of me, but my friends and I continue to watch them in our annual horror-movie-thon!

I’m so glad, Renu! They are truly classics!
Glad you found the necklace. Mine was made locally but I use the oils on little felt patches. Loved wearing it but had forgotten about. Thank you for a timely reminder.
Sandy, I think you may have been the one who tipped me off to try Amazon! I hope you will wear yours too!
This is intriguing! I have never worn a scent like this. I love essential oils. If I didn’t wear perfume I would be tempted to try this!

I wear perfume too. This is an alternative for fun. But perfume can be sprayed or dropped on the lava ball too 🙂
I love this idea and the necklace you chose is so pretty. I saw Rosemary’s Baby a long time ago, I watched it with my mom. She was, on occasion perhaps a bit TOO permissive with my media consumption, I sometimes think. lol

Hahaha! I also always saw “adult” movies because they were on TV all the time! This was a scary one, but I loved Ruth Gordon and John Cassavettes. One of my college professors lived in the building, the Dakota in NYC where John Lennon lived. I’ve always been intrigued by it.
I forgot how pretty Mia Farrow was so I loved seeing the photo but I do remember being frightened during the movie. Very pretty necklace – I may be a bit prejudiced because of the hearts!

She was! She used to have waist-length hair when she was a teen in Peyton Place. She played a character named Allison, and I had long blondish hair too so people used to tease me about Peyton Place. I liked her in this movie because her fragility seemed appropriate. Definitely scary movie! Even though a replica of her necklace would’ve been fun, I had to have the hearts 🙂
I have a necklace and bracelet from Lisa Hoffman but she used little balls of fragrance. I watched Rosemary’s Baby again a few years ago and it still scares me!

I haven’t seen Lisa Hoffman’s jewelry in person, but it looks beautiful online. What I like about this is I can also put my own perfumes in the lava ball or on a piece of felt. It’s been a number of years since I’ve seen Rosemary’s Baby, though I’ve probably seen it at least 5 times or maybe more. I’m due to see it again. I always regretted that I never got a chance to get into an apartment at The Dakota in NYC where they filmed the movie while I lived in the ‘hood. One of my professors lived there (as did John Lennon and Lauren Bacall), but alas no invitation ever came.
I remember that movie! I used to enjoy aromatherapy back then when I was still working at pharmaceuticals. Pyschologically I think it helps esp after a stressful day at work.
I think stress relief and relaxation are the most obvious way aromatherapy helps me too. This necklace is a fun way to “wear” a scent.
you picked the right scent, because I find this quite intruiging. 🙂 What a unique gift this would be. Like you, i’d be a little concerned about the oil seeping or staining. I’ll be curious to know how it works for you.

You’re right, Shelley. This would make a great gift. I have to remember it when the holidays arrive.
I have a friend who is very into aromatherapy, I wonder if she would like this!

That’s one of the reasons I bought the aromatherapy necklace, Christine, and I’m glad I did.
The necklace is so pretty! I’m not into most scents because they often give me a headache. I do love and enjoy foodie type scents though like the Cinnfully Vanilla one you described.
