Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114 EDP, My New Autumn Fragrance

Amber scents are my favorites for fall and winter, though I wear them all year round. What is an amber scent, you ask? Amber isn’t actually a single scent but a combination of different scents blended to create an amber fragrance profile. Amber is a warm, sometimes sweet, rich, musky fragrance that also may be spicy and/or powdery. I love amber because it’s cuddly and enveloping. Amber is part of the family of oriental scents.

I have quite a few amber scents, but I’m always on the hunt for new ones. I heard about Ambre 114 by the indie fragrance brand, Histoires de Parfums, from someone in the Facebook Fragrance Friends group. I bought a tiny vial for $5 from Smallflower (I’ll write about this online retailer soon), and it was an instant hit for me. I used up the tiny vial in two days, so I was on the hunt for more.

I bought a small spray bottle of Ambre 114 EDP on Amazon, and I’m thrilled with my purchase.

First, the box is so cool. It opens like a book with the slim spray bottle tucked in a little nook inside.

But the best part is the scent itself. It is cozy and absolutely yummy!

Here are the main accords:

  • amber
  • vanilla
  • fresh spicy
  • woody
  • warm spicy
  • aromatic
  • powdery
  • balsamic
  • rose
  • sweet

Ambre 114 by Histoires de Parfums was created by Gerald Ghislain, the founder of Histoires de Parfums, and Magali Senequier, the “nose”. It was introduced in 2001 as a gender neutral fragrance, though to me, it skews somewhat more feminine. It is made in France.

The top notes are nutmeg and thyme, and to me are a bit sharp initially, though they mellow quickly into the middle and base notes.

The middle notes are sandalwood, patchouli, rose, geranium, cedar, and vetiver.

The base notes are my absolute favorites: amber, vanilla, benzoin, tonka bean, and musk. For me, the drydown is mellow, warm, and absolutely divine!

Of 1460 votes on Ambre 114 on the fragrance website, Fragrantica.com, the scent was rated 4.3 out of 5. It is either “loved” or “liked”, considered most appropriate for fall and winter, and can be worn day or night.

Ambre 114 packs quite the punch. I find it to be long wearing, lasting a few hours on me. And it projects quite well. Even Jeff whose sense of smell isn’t that great was able to smell it the other evening.

The small bottle I purchased contains 15 ml/0.5 fl. oz., and it’s priced at $35 on the Histoires de Parfums website. I love this fragrance so much that I’m afraid the slim bottle won’t last me more than a couple of weeks. I see a larger size bottle in my future!

If you’re a fan of amber scents or warm, vanilla-y, spicy fragrances, you should check out Ambre 114, too!

This sounds marvelous! I’ve become such a perfume nut lately. I’ve even been doing perfume reviews for my Facebook friends!

    1. Ambre 114 is a real beauty for an amber lover like me. That’s great that you’re writing perfume reviews now! What’s your current fave? Do you belong to the Facebook Fragrance Friends group??

I do love amber perfumes. Right now, my favorite perfume is the very unusual City on Fire from Imaginary Authors. No, I don’t belong to Fragrance Friends. I will look into it! Oh, and now that I dumped Ipsy, I subscribed to Scentbird!

        1. I haven’t tried anything yet from Imaginary Authors, but I have considered getting their discovery set one of these days. The FFF group loves Imaginary Authors. City of Fire sounds like it could be up my alley, but I’m afraid to even look right now (but I will peek at it on Fragrantica!). I love the name! I will be curious to hear what you think about Scentbird. I have been a subscriber for at least 7 years, but I only get 4 or 5 scents a year from them. They have a lot of designer and celeb fragrances that I’m usually not interested in, but lately, they have been having more indie brands including Histoires de Parfums, Confessions of a Rebel, and some others. I did find a few fragrances that I love on Scentbird that I’ve bought full size bottles afterwards. Keep me posted on what you select coz I’m always looking for ideas. This month, I am supposed to get Hypnotizing Fire from The Harmonist.

Definitely get a discovery set! That’s how I became a fan. My first Scentbird selection is Oddity from Rag and Bone. I’m very excited to try it. Let me know what Hypnotizing Fire is like!

          2. We’ll have to compare notes! In the meantime, I will look up City on Fire and Oddity. I am going in to Boston tomorrow to get my hair colored and cut, and if I can’t make my return train, I think I’ll go to Saks and see if the fragrance testers are out again, not sure if they still hidden due to covid.

This sounds gorgeous and something I would enjoy. I love amber scents and it’s the perfect time for it with the colder weather. I’ve never tried anything from this perfume house before. I’ll definitely put this on my wishlist to try next. And $35 isn’t too bad of a price for a 1/2 ounce (15 ml).

    1. If you’re a fan of amber scents, I think there’s a good chance you would like it, Diana. I bought a $5 sample from Smallflower first, but truth be told, it was such a tiny sample that I think it was a better deal to buy the half ounce bottle. If you ever do try it, LMK what you think!

Jeff would be smart to put this in your Hanukkah stocking. Sounds like you’ve found a scent that you two want around a lot.

    1. Thank you, Marcia, for that suggestion! I wonder how I can get him to read your comment, lol

  4. I love amber scents for th season as well! I agree with Marcia, Jeff should get this for you for Hanukkah!

    1. I think Jeff’s going to get me a new office chair for Hanukkah, lol, so I will probably end up buying myself a larger size bottle at some point. If you like amber scents, definitely try a sample of Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114 some day 🙂
