I started holiday shopping at the end of August this year. When Jeff went to visit his older daughter in Atlanta, I drove up to Newburyport, a beautiful seaside city north of Boston, that’s a great place for boutique shopping. It was a lovely warm but not hot Sunday, and I thought I was so smart for getting a jump on my holiday shopping. In retrospect, when I look at what I came home with, I wonder what was I thinking? Now I’m doing Holiday Shopping Phase 2!
A terrific holiday gift for makeup lovers came across my desk recently. An exclusive at Ulta Beauty, L’Oreal Paris Holiday Makeup Kit.
As a totality, the kit is well suited for a glam night out. I think it’s perfect for a New Year’s Eve look if you add one or two of your own matte shadows. IMO, the Rose Chrome eye shadow can do double-duty as a highlighter. It’s the perfect shade of pink to wash onto cheeks, cupid’s bow and temples for a little extra glow at night. As an eye shadow, I like it on its own swept across my lid for nighttime, or during the day, I often dab a little in the middle of my lid over MAC Paint Pot in Painterly for some extra pop.
I’m a fan of L’Oreal Infallible Never Fail Eyeliner in Black because it’s so soft and easy to apply.
Though L’Oreal’s Voluminous Butterfly Intenza remains my favorite mascara from L’Oreal because of the wacky wand that’s perfect for my down-turned eyes, I must say I am impressed with Voluminous Original Mascara. The wand is a traditional shape, and it works very well. I get both length and volume from this mascara with no flaking or clumping.
The Color Riche Matte Lipstick in Blake’s Red is a classic blue-red shade, a Hollywood-starlet red named after Blake Lively. It’s the type of red lip that looks good on everybody. It’ll add some serious va-va-va-voom to any outfit or look. It’s super-smooth, highly pigmented and easy to apply (dimethicone is the first ingredient in the list!). Although it’s matte, even my dry lips can wear it. My only nitpick is that it’s noticeably scented with a traditional “lipstick rose” scent, though it fades once it’s on my lips.
Here are the swatches. They are over bare skin because I forgot to put primer on my arm, and I think even without primer they look good. The shadows are more impressive with primer. Don’t you think the Rose Chrome shadow makes a pretty terrific highlighter as well?

Thank you, DiEtta xoxoxo I agree that it would have been good to add a matte shadow, even if it was a smaller size, to the kit so you’d have everything in one place. I’ve been grabbing my own mattes and adding them for the crease and V. One thing I can say about these metallics is that they are not glittery, they have a lovely sheen that anyone can wear. Rainy and gloomy here in MA today. I’ve gotta work harder on that smile today, lol!

I was amazed at how good the pigmentation is. When I wear the shadows, I always use primer but I forgot when I swatched them. The colors really show up, and they last until I remove them. I love ’em!

I bought two shades of the eyeshadows and I love them. They are different than the ones in this kit so I should look for that. I wouldn’t use the lipstick but that’s what my giveaways are for! The shadows are beautifully pigmented.
