Inexpensive Way To Dry Makeup Brushes: Artist’s Loft Drying Rack

When you dry your makeup brushes, you’re supposed to dry them pointing down. That way the water drips down and off the bristles, so it doesn’t destroy the brush. When I wash several brushes at a time, as I usually do, I have brushes gingerly balanced, pointing downward, around my bathroom sink. It’s a real pain.

I know there are very nice dryer trees out there such as Benjabelle, but they tend take up a fair amount of space. And they tend to be a little pricey, money I’d rather spend on makeup!

I belong to a group on Facebook that’s made up of a lot of makeup artists, and one of them recommended Artist’s Loft Brush Wash & Dryer Rack.

I Bought This            Affiliate Links

It is kind of a weird gizmo, but by and large it works! It’s simple: it contains:

  • a brush bowl to use for washing brushes, if you like
  • a mesh liner that you can use to help clean any super-dirty brushes that may have caked on foundation (I hope not!)
  • a twirly, coiled top to hang the brushes (sorry, I can’t think of any more accurate words to describe it!).

It’s made out of metal, and is fairly sturdy.

Unfortunately, brushes with fat handles don’t fit in the twirly top. I guess art brushes must have skinnier handles. So instead, I stick one brush in each end of the tube formed by the top, and I put the ones with the widest handles in the bowl with the mesh liner in it.

I bought the Artist’s Loft Brush Dryer at Michael’s Craft Store. It was priced at $9.99, and I had a Michael’s coupon for 50% off. It was well worth $5!

What do you think about this contraption? What do you use to dry your brushes?

And on a different topic, if you haven’t entered the Cosmedica Skincare Vitamin C Serum Giveaway, please do! They will be two winners, selected at random at 11:59 EDT on June 23. Cosmedica will be sponsoring another giveaway in a few weeks with a different product and this one will be open INTERNATIONALLY! Woohoo! But in the meantime, check out this giveaway for a great product that I use everyday. Love vitamin C <3

    1. I haven’t noticed any scratching so far, Honey, but I don’t have expensive brushes.

  19. Very cool. I have a similar product for my paint brushes, but duh I never thought to try something like this for my makeup brushes. I’ll have to look into this for sure.
Leigh recently posted…Bare Minerals Bare Skin Foundation Review, Swatches and Photos. My Profile

    1. That’s exactly what it’s for, Leigh: paint brushes! So when you’re not using it for your painting, you can use it for your makeup brushes 😉

  20. Definitely NEED this!

    1. I’ve really found it useful, Lisa, and for $5 why not!

  21. This is genius! I recently bought a makeup brush drying “tree” and it was $20 and doesn’t hold all my brushes. I need this!!!
Julie recently posted…Sally Hansen Runway Trends: TRACY REESE 2014 Complete Salon Manicure Nail Polish reviewMy Profile

    1. Actually $20 isn’t too bad for some of the drying trees I’ve seen, but I’m super cheap and was looking for something that took up less room that I could put away. $5 was the right price for me!

  22. This si SO neat. I currently let my brushes dry on a paper towel when I deep clean them. I spot clean with 91% alcohol which evaporates so I don’t have any dry time when I spot clean. I would use this!
Ashley recently posted…Ipsy June 2014 Glam BagMy Profile

    1. I was looking at the isopropyl and the 91% alcohol just the other day, Ashley. I didn’t realize that 91% evaporates. That’s great for spot cleaning. Since I’m not an MUA, I mostly wash my brushes with baby shampoo or I occasionally use brush cleaner spray. I usually do a bunch of brushes at once, and need someplace to dry them and I do like to dry them brush head down so this inexpensive solution fits the bill.

  23. Oh my goodness, how awesome is this contraption? I wouldn’t have to worry about brushes falling off the edge of the table or the water seeping backwards! I’m thinking there must be a way to DIY this though. Hmm …
Tine @ Beautyholics Anonymous recently posted…Do You Hoard Complimentary Hotel Toiletries? My Profile

    1. Isn’t it, Tine? My artist friends use these for their intended purpose. But why not for makeup brushes? I had mine precariously balanced all around my sink and it was a drag. Maybe there is a DIY way if you get a long spring and suspend it between two something or others!

  24. This is such a nice idea for smaller eye brushes! I usually dry my brushes flat hanging off the edge of a towel.
Kristina Vieweg recently posted…Beauty Blogazons Weekly Roundup- 6/21/14My Profile

    1. Yes, Kristina, you’re right. It’s perfect for the smaller-handled brushes. But I’ve made it work for my large handled ones too because I was so sick of brushes drying perched downwards around my sink!

  25. i need this in my life!

    1. It’s a really useful little contraption, Chrissy! Well worth the $5

  26. Kate Purvis says:

OMG! This is exactly what I’ve been looking for!! Everything I have found is super expensive! Michael’s here I come! With my coupon 🙂 Thanks so much!!

    1. I’m so glad you found it & a coupon. It’s not the prettiest contraption but it does the trick, Kate. Thanks for commenting 🙂

  27. WOW! That’s such an amazing find and you got a great deal. It’s also such a clever gizmo. I need one like now. Thanks for sharing xo
Brigette Ramos recently posted…Makeup Look & Tutorial — Taylor Swift Wildest Dreams Inspired LookMy Profile

    1. Thank you, Brigette, for visiting and taking the time to comment. Yes, I love this brush drying rack. If it works for artists’ brushes, why not makeup brushes? The thick-handled ones don’t fit, but I don’t wash them every day like I do my shadow and concealer brushes so I’m good with this. I found it at Michael’s Craft store!
