Ipsy Plus “Block Party” June 2019

Time for another Ipsy Plus subscription box. This month, the theme is Block Party.

I thought Ipsy Plus had dispensed with themes since they are seemingly unnecessary. But Block Party goes well with summer, and what’s in this month’s Block Party box does fit the theme. So let’s see what I got!

PūR Big Look $21

PUR Big Look Mascara, a pink tube, neversaydiebeauty.com

The first item that jumped out at me when I opened the familiar hot pink shipping box was the raspberry pink tube from PUR. I thought it was a pink lipgloss, and I was so excited. Turns out, it’s not lipgloss at all: it’s mascara. That’s why it has Big Look on the tube, though in my mind, I thought that could also fit with lipgloss 😉 Especially since it doesn’t say mascara anywhere on the tube. But it’s mascara, and though I would have preferred an opaque bright pink lipgloss, I’m always happy to try a new mascara.

PUR tends to have big wands, and this one is no exception. The long, rather fat wand with plastic teeth is a little too big for my liking, but I got the hang of it. While I thought it required repeated strokes over my lashes, it did make my lashes look quite striking, I think. While I don’t like it as much as my favorite mascaras, I am very impressed with the final look. I will definitely continue to use it.

tresTIQUE Matte Color & Shiny Balm Lip Crayon $25

trestique Lip Crayon Balm put together in one piece

When I first saw “matte color”, I thought I might have to give away this pretty lip crayon. But then I discovered the cleverly hidden lip balm in the base of the stick, and I was in business!

I love the deep red shade of the lipstick that they call “Belize Bordeaux”, and the “Grenache Balm” is more or less a sheer slightly pink shade that is very hydrating.

I love the clever way this lip duo is put together, including the magnetic case that goes over the lip crayon with a secure snap. I’m a fan of tresTIQUE anyway, but this is the first full size product from the brand that I have tried. So happy I didn’t give this one away!

BTW, here I am wearing the PUR Big Look Mascara and the trestique Lip Crayon and Balm. Kind of a goofy photo of me on a day when I am not feeling well, but I want you to see what they look like on.

Sunday Riley CEO Vitamin C Rich Hydration Cream $65

jar of Sunday Riley CEO Vitamin C Cream, neversaydiebeauty.com

Because it’s pricey, the only Sunday Riley skincare I’ve used have been samples and travel size products I received in Sephora Play bags when I used to subscribe. So I was excited to receive a full size jar of Sunday Riley CEO Vitamin C Rich Hydration Cream. Not surprisingly, I opened it right away.

Inside is a rich pale yellow cream with a citrusy scent. I actually love citrus scents so I really love this. The scent goes away on contact with my skin.

The cream is quite thick so I think I may save it for autumn and cold weather, and continue using the PRAI Vitamin C Cream that I also have that is more of a summer weight. Nevertheless, I am glad to have both of these vitamin C gems.

Generation Clay Ultra Violet Brightening Purple Clay Mask $39

Though I often avoid clay for my dry skin, I’ve found that it makes sense for me to read the ingredients before giving clay masks away. It definitely appears that hydrating, collagen stimulating and soothing ingredients like desert lime and aloe vera in this pretty purple mask mitigate the effects of the deep cleaning kaolin and bentonite clays. In addition, the mask contains AHAs from the super fruit Davidson plum to brighten and rejuvenate skin. I’m in. I will give this mask from Australian brand, Generation Clay, a try.

TETRIS X Ipsy Block Party Eyeshadow Palette $24

Every month, Ipsy includes a palette in the Ipsy Plus box. This month, Ipsy teamed up with the iconic video game that I have never heard of, TETRIS, to create a shadow palette to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the game.

As you will see, the palette is a mix of neutrals and brights, mattes and shimmers. I have my eye on the champagne shade, t-spin. They recommend trying some of the shades as liners, and that’s how I intend to use the deep ocean blue shade, top out, though I think it will also be a good shade for the V. The neutrals always come in handy. I’ll do some experimenting with the raspberry shades.

Final Thoughts

I’m very happy with at least 3 of the items, and I will definitely try the Generation Clay Mask and the TETRIS X Ipsy palette that are somewhat out of my wheelhouse. The value of the 5 full size items is $174. I paid $25. I still really love this subscription. Originally, I thought I wouldn’t want full size products, but boy, was I wrong! I have discovered so many great products with this subscription. And if I weren’t blogging, I probably would never buy any cosmetics again because I could just use what I get in my Ipsy Plus box.

Great products! Eye palette would be out of my comfort zone but how fun to try it! Hope you are feeling better.

    1. I love this Ipsy subscription, Sandy! Even though I wasn’t feeling that great last night, I decided to play with the TETRIS x Ipsy shadow palette. The silvery champagne shade was perfect for my blue-grey eyes, and surprisingly, the ocean blue shade worked well in the V and crease – much less bright than it appeared in the pan. Success! Thanks for your good wishes, Sandy. I am having a diverticulitis flare, and I’m on a liquid diet. After 3 days, I feel pretty weak. It’s slowly getting better, but not fast enough for me! Hope you are doing well xo

  2. Not a bad box at all! It would have been better if you had been excited about more than three of the products, but at least there were three that made you happy!

    1. I decided to play around with the TETRIS x Ipsy palette last night, and I was quite happy with it after all. The silver/champagne shade is perfect for me, and the ocean blue shade was much more usable as an accent shade than I expected. Success!

First of all, feel better!!! Second, the lip crayon looks great (it even matches your shirt 😛 ) and the mascara doesn’t seem at all bad either. The Sunday Riley is a major score too. I’m usually a bit apprehensive about clay products but you’re right, formulation and ingredients matter, and it seems the days of all clay products turning one’s face into the Sahara are behind us. Glad you’re having fun with your new tetris palette. I keep being tempted by the new(ish) influx of greens (Melt Smoke Sessions re-release, Chanel Blurry Green – so pretty!!!) but I’ve told myself I’m not allowed to buy more eyeshadow until I start wearing it more than a few times a month. So far that hasn’t happened, so I should probably just keep my money and continue randomly using what I already own. She says, as there is an Hourglass shadow pot sitting in her Nordstrom cart… Nope, better take that out. Might keep the Chanel red nail polish in there though. hehehe.

    1. Thank you, Rachel! I am getting better slowly, but I’m afraid to start eating again. You’d think I’d lose a few pounds, but not that I can tell, lol. I really am having fun with my Ipsy goodies. I haven’t had a chance to try the mask yet – maybe tonight. As far as lust for green palettes go, I am dying for Melt Smoke Session, but I keep taking it out of my basket – it’s too expensive, and like you, I’m not using enough of the palettes I have. I bought Huda Emerald Obsession months ago, and I haven’t used it once. Discipline!! I will check out the Chanel Blurry Green coz I haven’t seen it yet. Does it have a fragrance? I have been lusting after the Kaja trios because I love the packaging. But I’m trying to be strong!!!

      1. rachel says:

I haven’t seen any of the Blurry(insert colour name here) sets in person but I’m going to guess that there isn’t any fragrance, just on the basis of them looking like the same formula of the last quad that I purchased (Clair-Obscur, I think it was last summer?) which has no smell that I can detect.
The Kaja trios look awesome too! We’ll have to be strong together!!!

        1. Rachel, I just checked out Chanel Blurry Green quad on Temptalia, and she rate it extremely highly. Thank goodness, it costs $62 because there’s no way I can spend that. The quad is so gorgeous, I would love it.

  4. Gabrielle says:

I’ve gotten hooked on Boxycharm/BoxyLuxe and Allure, but I might have to add this one. That Sunday Riley alone is a super item!

    1. Gabrielle, that’s a lot of subbie boxes! I had GlossyBox for a little while, and it was nice, but I think the brands are better from Ipsy. Boxycharm is definitely a great box. I don’t know BoxyLuxe. I don’t know if you’d be overwhelmed with cosmetics if you added Ipsy?? But I am so happy with this subscription!

      1. Gabrielle says:

BoxyLuxe is a splurge and I definitely debated long and hard, but I finally took the plunge and got my first one this month and… wow! The travel hair dryer alone was amazing (that thing is POWERFUL), plus the Farmacy serum, the truffle hydrating mist, the really luscious lip gloss… so many goodies!

        1. That sounds incredible, Gabrielle! I cannot possibly spend any more money, but that won’t stop me from checking out BoxyLuxe. Your recent box sounds incredible. I want that travel hairdryer 😉

  5. I would love to get a full-size Sunday Riley product! You’ve never heard of Tetris? I used to play in bars inn my 20’s.

    1. I was very happy to see that Sunday Riley Vitamin C Cream in this month’s box, but I am saving it till fall/winter because it’s much heavier than the PRAI Vitamin C Cream I’ve been using lately. Ipsy usually includes an expensive skincare item every month, one of the pluses of the box. No, I had never heard of TETRIS. I didn’t go to bars in NYC very often, and they didn’t have video games in the bars in the City and I don’t play video games anyway, lol, so I was clueless about it!

  6. I was so surprised to find the full size Sunday Riley in the box. I’m glad you described the scent so that I can open it and not have to give it away. I always like Pur Mascaras so that’s another treat in the box. I received the palette too. The differences in my box are a set of Jolii Matte lipsticks (those will be in a giveaway), a Suva Hydra liner in black and a Suva eyeliner brush that’s super thin. A great box this month.

    1. I hope that you can use the Sunday Riley Vitamin C Cream. The citrus scent is noticeable but pleasant, and I didn’t smell it once it was on my face. I’m not familiar with Suva – I’ve gotta check it out! I’m glad you enjoyed your box too.

  8. I agree with you that most of these products are good. I love that balm hidden in the lip crayon. So clever. This box is definitely worth the money!!

    1. I agree, the lip crayon and balm in one is such an innovative idea!

  10. The Tetris palette is honestly my favorite part of the box! I can’t wait to see how you use it!
