Ipsy Plus October 2020 “You’re Magic” Bag & Tarte Setting Powder Giveaway

I Bought This, Affiliate Links

Ipsy Plus “You’re Magic” Glam Bag

When I got an email from Ipsy to show me the two products they chose for me and to give me a chance to personalize the rest of my bag, I was kind of underwhelmed. In fact, I even went to my account page to see if I could skip the month. Unfortunately, if you want to skip a month, it has to be well in advance of that month. So if you know in advance you’re going to be away, you could skip a month. But if you aren’t thrilled with the products you see, you’re out of luck, it’s too late to skip. Oh well.

Then I remembered that a friend who knew in advance what the bag looked like and what some of the choices were was excited about the October bag, so I settled down and made some selections. Now that I have my “You’re Magic” bag, I’m not completely sure which products I chose and which Ipsy chose for me.

The black drawstring bag with a gold stylized eye surrounded by beauty icons on one side and the phrase “You’re Magic” on the back is cute enough. To be honest, I am just not into the drawstring bags. At. All. And the plastic quilted mailing envelope is cute, but it is not recyclable. Frankly, I wish Ipsy would go back to sending the products in a recyclable cardboard box with no bag at all if they can’t afford to do the makeup bags anymore. I am planning to email them and suggest it, though I am sure they will ignore me.

So what did I get this month? Unlike most of my Ipsy Plus bags lately that have skewed toward skincare products, “You’re Magic” is all makeup. I got 3 lip products, 2 eyeshadow palettes and setting powder.  I think it’s the first all makeup bag I’ve gotten. Cool. Here are the items:

Tarte Shape Tape Setting Powder: This was one of the two products chosen for me. I love Tarte products, but I seldom use setting powder anymore. My skin is too dry. So I will give this away to one lucky reader who will really use it. Keep reading for the Giveaway and Rafflecopter widget below. $34

Violet Voss Lip Gloss, shade Delight: I have received a couple of Violet Voss mini shadow palettes from Ipsy in the past, and I liked them. I think I chose this Violet Voss Lip Gloss because it looked opaque, which I prefer, and it looked like a color I would wear on my computer or phone screen. I was surprised when I took it out of its box and discovered that “Delight” is a pale peach shade.

It’s pretty and kind of 1960s retro, but it’s not a fall/winter shade. It made me think that Violet Voss must have a lot of this shade from the spring/summer left over, and they wanted to get rid of it so it went to Ipsy. I guess I’m cynical. Also, I noticed that the first ingredient in the list is mineral oil. I can wear mineral oil, but I have learned that mineral oil just isn’t the greatest ingredient for lips (it may dry them instead of hydrate them), and it is a petrochemical. I was actually disheartened that an upscale-ish brand like Violet Voss would use mineral oil as the first ingredient in one of their products. $12

Half Caked Double Feature Lip Fondant & Gloss, shades ASAP and Rich Rich, respectively: I think I chose this lip duo. It has a sparkly, translucent lip gloss that I may wear from time to time but not regularly. It was the Lip Fondant that I was curious about. The plum shade, ASAP, is lovely and just my style. But I discovered that Lip Fondant is really just a fancy name for liquid lipstick. Lip Fondant goes on creamy, but within a couple of minutes it dries down completely. The first couple of times I wore it, I already had City Lips Clear on my lips, and I was ecstatic because I thought Half Caked Lip Fondant was the most fabulous liquid lipstick because it was so non-drying. Well, today I discovered that without putting City Lips Clear on first, Half Caked Lip Fondant is a liquid lipstick that is a bit drying on my lips.

But because I love the color, perfect for fall, I will wear it with City Lips Clear as a cushion. $20

Lovecraft Beauty Eyeshadow Palette, Warm Rituals: I think this palette may have been chosen for me. Although Lovecraft Beauty is an affordable brand that is made in China, the shades in the Warm Rituals palette are gorgeous autumn/winter shades with two outstanding gold and bronze metallics and some nice neutrals mattes.

Even though the shadows are made with mica and talc, they are not powdery, don’t kick up dust, and are easy to blend. I’ve worn it a couple of times already, and I really like it. $35

doucce Freematic Eyeshadow Pro Palette: doucce, as a brand is equivalent to Lovecraft Beauty, IMHO: made in China, pressed powders made from talc and mica. The palette case is quite gorgeous. It’s made from shiny, heavy black plastic with curved lines that make it look like a small clutch bag. Inside is a large mirror, and the palette floor is magnetic. Though this palette appears to be unique to Ipsy, there are lots of Freematic quads available on the doucce website, so you can swap the small pans out.

Like the Lovecraft Beauty palette, the doucce Freematic Eyeshadow Pro Palette is perfect for autumn and winter. The shades are rich neutrals in the brown/copper family with a black and ivory included. There’s also a larger pan with champagne pressed powder.

The champagne pan, embossed with the lower “d” for doucce, is a very nice highlighter. The smaller shadow pans are embossed with a quilting design. It’s a beautiful looking palette. I haven’t used it yet, but I look forward to trying it. $65

I chose an add-on this month. Because I am a big fan of Dr. Lipp Miracle Balm (now called Dr. Lipp Original Nipple Balm), I couldn’t resist the opportunity to try Dr. Lipp Superfood Tints. The box says that the product can be used on lips or cheeks, but I would not put a lip balm on my cheeks. There are three tubes containing three shades made with three different superfood ingredients:

  • sweet potato – pink-raspberry-ish
  • elderberry – purple-ish
  • red radish – reddish.

The shades are translucent tints that come in squeeze tubes. They are perfect for wearing at home or for any casual activities. They are hydrating, though not quite as thick as Dr. Lipp Miracle Balm. The tints are made from natural, though not vegan, ingredients. Lanolin, an ingredient that works really well on my super dry lips, is an animal product, a secretion from sheep skin that is extracted from sheep wool after it is sheared. I am very happy I got this trio especially for less than if I bought them on the Dr. Lipp website or on Amazon. $23, and I think I paid $12

While on the Dr. Lipp website, I noticed that there is new Dr. Lipp CBD Calm Balm for Extra Dry Skin. I will definitely try that this winter.

So I ended up being relatively happy with the items in my bag this month, though some more prestige brands would have been good. The bag (without the ad-on) is worth $166, which actually is one of the lowest value bags that I have gotten because I chose 2 lip products that tend to cost less, and I didn’t get any skincare which is usually more expensive.

As usual, if you decide to subscribe to Ipsy, please consider using my referral code so I can get 1800 points, wow 😀

Ipsy is offering me a chance to send 3 Ipsy bags (I think they are the regular $10 bags with travel size products) to 3 friends for free. I am sure they will try to get you to subscribe after you get the free bag, but you don’t have to. If you want a free Ipsy bag, let me know below and the first 3 people will get one. Also, if you think you will wear the Tarte Setting Powder, please enter the giveaway.

Tarte Shape Tape Setting Powder Giveaway

Tarte Shape Tape Setting Powder with Amazonian Clay is applied over makeup for longer lasting wear and to help control shine throughout the day. You can blur, bake and set your makeup with this vegan, translucent powder. IMHO, this setting powder would be best for those with oily or combination skin, or those with normal skin who get a bit oily as the day goes on.

Tarte Shape Tape Setting Powder is a loose powder that comes in two shades, Translucent and Translucent Tan Deep, but I am giving away only Translucent. The loose powder comes in a compact under a screen that “doses” the correct amount by pushing on the screen. The powder can be applied with the puff that comes with the compact or with your own powder brush.

The compact contains 12 g/0.42 oz. It is priced at $34. Please feel free to enter the giveaway if you have the skin type to wear setting powder.

The giveaway rules are the same as always. You MUST LEAVE A COMMENT ON THE BLOG about why you want to win the Tarte Setting Powder and enter that you did it on the Rafflecopter widget below. You can do the other tasks on the widget for more chances to win. As I mentioned previously, I do check that the winner drawn by the widget actually did the tasks they said they did. As always, I am not responsible if the prize gets lost in the mail. Sadly, there is no replacement. But the good news is that in 6 years, no giveaway prizes have gotten lost in the mail. Let’s hope the USPS is back to normal 😉 U.S. entries only. One entry per household. If you won my last giveaway (I think it was a cleanser from Derma E), please sit this one out. Thanks and Good luck!

I feel utterly guilty right now for talking this up to you because the spoilers I saw vastly oversold this. If it helps, I was underwhelmed too. I did get a decent eyeshadow palette but I also got one that really depressed me. *sigh*

    1. Allison says:

Oh no, don’t feel bad at all, Gabrielle! I had to get it anyway because it was too late to skip. Which was the palette that depressed you? Do tell! I was really disappointed by the Violet Voss gloss, and the gloss in the Half Baked duo, though I love the color of the Lip Fondant. It was interesting that the dollar value was much less this month.

      1. Gabrielle says:

I got the Seraphine Botanicals palette and I really don’t need more soft, warm neutrals. I’m a bit on the eccentric side, so I’m glad I got the Laura Makeup Labs palette as well. I like eye-popping colors. I share your disappointment in the Half Baked products. Aptly named, I’d say. I’m really hoping November makes up for what was not the month I’d hoped it would be.

        1. Ah, I see. I think I may have gotten something from Seraphine Botanicals in the past, but I don’t remember what it was. I have the Laura Sanchez Makeup Moods palette, but I never used it. I will have to remember that you like brights in case I get more that I won’t wear!

          1. Gabrielle says:

If you want the Seraphine palette, I will happily send it you. It’s very nice, it’s just that it’s neutrals.

          2. Gabrielle, I was trying to find the Seraphine palette on Ipsy, but the only one I saw was the Seraphine Sakura + Sage Eyeshadow and Blush palette. It had lots of peach shades, so it didn’t sound like a traditional neutral palette. But if that’s it, I am interested! Was it a different one?

          3. Gabrielle says:

Yes, it’s the Sakura + Sage palette. I have always seen peach as a neutral, so that’s why I described it that way. I can send it in early November if you would like. I would love to see it go to a good home!

          4. I will take you up on your generous offer, Gabrielle. I love peach shades! I have an unused Tetris palette with brights, and somewhere I think I have an unused PUR Troll palette. Any interest?? I can email pix

          5. Gabrielle says:

Gosh! Yes, I would love to see the pics. Also, can you email me your address? I am pretty sure I mislaid it.

  7. Debra Branigan says:

I would like the Tarte product because it sounds like a perfect makeup for me and I would love to try it. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Yay, thanks for entering, Debra! I think you would like the Tarte Setting Powder. Good luck!

    2. DiEtta says:

The Tarte Setting Power sounds so nice. Since being in “Stay at Home” setting power is so nice just to touch up your face. Haven’t used much face make up since February. Been kind of nice. Finding out what really is a NEED OR A WANT! 😱🙋🏻‍♀️🥰😷

      1. Great to hear from you, DiEtta! I know what you mean about not using much face makeup since February. Sometimes I put on some foundation just for the fun of it, lol. So did you enter the giveaway anyway? You could give it to your daughter or granddaughter??

        1. DiEtta says:

Allison I did enter. If I would win I’ll keep it for myself. I love Tarte Products. I actually use several of their products. I love the eyebrow colored gel. Have used it for years.

          1. Yay, thank you for entering!
