I’ve Hit Pan: Makeup I Use All The Time

You know that I’m big on “empties” posts. I love to finish things up, recycle them and move on either to a new one or to something else. But for makeup, it takes a looooooong time to finish things up. So I thought about doing a “hitting pan” post.

Hitting pan is kind of a weird indicator because it leaves out stuff in bottles or in sticks, but it is what it is. Back when I owned a mere fraction of the makeup I own now, I used to hit pan much more often. And I pretty much kept my makeup till it was used up completely. Although I still do, I am more cognizant of throwing out makeup that’s old, finished or not.

As I’ve said many times, I prefer creams for my super dry skin, and though I own plenty of pressed powders, creams are the ones I reach for most often. No surprise that the 6 items that I’ve hit pan on are creams.

IT Cosmetics CC+ Vitality Brightening Creme Blush

I got the IT Cosmetics CC+ Vitality Brightening Creme Blush in a lovely, very natural-looking pink shade called Je Ne Sais Quoi as part of a TSV on QVC a while back. I bought the bundle because I was dying to try IT’s new at the time cushion compact foundation. I got the foundation, a big fluffy makeup brush, the blush, and a lipstick that is supposed to be in the same shade. Frankly, the cream blush was the winner in the bundle for me. Although I like the idea of cushion compacts, the sponge applicator that this one came with was unusable because it was “uncleanable”, so I either had to apply it with a blending sponge or with a brush. It was less convenient, and as always with IT, the color of the foundation wasn’t a good match for me. The makeup brush I seldom use coz it’s too big. The lipstick is stiff, and the shade of pink is too light for my lips and doesn’t really show up. But it was fun to try all the products, and I got a great blush out of it.

My only complaint with this perfect sheer everyday blush is that it fades over time, more so than any of my other cream blushes. Nevertheless, it continues to be the one I reach for just about everyday.

IT Cosmetics CC+ Vitality Brightening Creme Blush contains 4.g/0.148 oz. and is priced at $24.

Tarte Colored Clay CC Undereye Corrector

I bought this serious full coverage corrector a while back. I’m laughing that Tarte has a deal where you can save 10% if they send you a new one every 3 months. Every 3 months? Now that would be using a hella lot of concealer. Mine is quite a bit older than that.

This concealer only comes in two shades: Light/Medium and Medium/Dark. I chose Light/Medium.

I use it as a masking concealer to cover my darkest dark spots. I apply it under foundation mostly because it’s a little dark for me.

It’s a stiff concealer, and it really does the job. It’s take me a while to finish it because a little goes a long way. Not sure I would repurchase it, but I do use it a lot.

Tarte CC Undereye Corrector contains 2.3g/0.08 oz. For $25, I think the little compact should come with a mirror inside.

Judith August Orange Masking Creme

I discovered this terrific concealer trio via an ad on Facebook. Maybe targeting on FB isn’t all bad??

Judith August Orange Masking Creme is the concealer I use most often. The cream is not quite as heavy as the Tarte CC Concealer. I also like the fact that I have three shades to choose from or I can blend my own (though I’m usually too lazy for that). The lightest of the three is a good match for me, and I tend to use that after applying foundation. Some days I apply this to my spots and skip the foundation altogether.

I thought I lost this little container last fall so I bought a replacement during the Judith August 30% off sale. Probably when I finish up the lightest shade, the one I use most often, I’ll move over to that one.

If you’re a fan of cream concealer, I really recommend this stuff. Judith August Orange Masking Creme contains 1.2 oz., is priced at $24 and is sold on the Judith August website where you can get 20% off now. If you have serious stuff to cover, check out this brand.

ColourPop Super Shock Shadows

I have about a million of the original ColourPop Super Shock eyeshadows with the weird bouncy, not quite cream formula. I think I might be the only person in the world who prefers these to the pressed powder ones from CP. Even though the cream-ish formula isn’t really the most blendable, I love it for when I want something I can apply quickly with my fingers.

The two shades I’ve hit pan on (which isn’t hard because they give you just a little bit) are:

  • Wattles, a dusty pink beige satin that probably is close to the same color as my red eyelids. Go figure 😉
  • Glitterati: I think this silver with gold ultra-glitter sheer shimmer shadow is my favorite eyeshadow for making me feel happy. I consider it a topper that I apply with my finger over the shadow in the middle of my eyelid for a little glow or subtle sparkle. In spite of its name, it is not glitter; it’s a shimmer shadow. Regardless of my advanced age, I do not do all matte especially at night. A little shimmer is a good thing, IMHO. I love it, and can’t recommend it more highly.

ColourPop Super Shock Shadows are regularly priced at $5, but they seem to be 20% off almost all the time. Right now, they’re $4.

IT Cosmetics Confidence In A Compact

Last year when Confidence In A Compact came out, I was dying to try it. I remember going back and forth trying for about a half hour to decide between Fair and Light shades because neither one was a perfect match. I chose Fair, a little on the light side.

I really love the super lightweight texture of this foundation. It is truly imperceptible! Although the IT Cosmetics website claims it’s full coverage, it sure is not for me. Pour moi, it’s light to medium. It’s somewhat buildable. Surprisingly, it’s a perfect summer foundation.

So why haven’t I finished it up yet? Because the shade is a little too light and because it’s not quite enough coverage for me for anything but everyday use. Because it’s got the great SPF 50 coverage, I am going to make a concerted effort to wear it everyday especially once I start spending more time outdoors.

Confidence In A Compact contains 18g/0.63 oz. and it’s priced at $38. It’s fragrance-free. In case you’re thinking you’d like to try it, it’s 50% off today only – Sunday March 25 – at the Ulta 21 Days of Beauty. At this price, if you can find a decent color match, it’s really worth it!

Speaking of solid foundation, I have almost hit pan on Paul & Joe Beaute Gel Foundation that’s very similar to Confidence In A Compact but with SPF 25.

This foundation has the delightful Paul & Joe scent that I find hard to describe. Tutti-fruitti, maybe? Whatever the scent is, I adore it. I find it so calming and uplifting. Unfortunately, the shade of this foundation doesn’t work for me either. I should be #10 Pink Beige for light skin with pink undertones, but I can’t tell what this shade is without removing it from the compact. At any rate, to my eye, it’s too yellow and too light on my skin. Like Confidence In A Compact, it’s loaded with skincare ingredients, it’s very lightweight with about the same coverage. Again, I should push myself to use this as an everyday foundation. $32 for Paul & Joe Beaute Gel Foundation refill on b-glowing although I’ve seen it for slightly less elsewhere, maybe on Amazon. You have to buy the cute compact case separately for $18.

So this is what I’ve hit pan on. All creams. I went through all the pressed powder makeup that I own, and I’m not even close. You can see where my loyalty lies.

How about you? What have you hit pan on recently?

  1. Oh wow, you did really well, Allison! I don’t think I’ve hit pan on any makeup but I am trying to do so this year!

    1. Thanks, Shireen! At least I’m making some progress toward finishing some things up! It takes so darn long to use up makeup!

  2. I don’t use that much make up stuff in 5 years! It’s kind of funny because I don’t go out with naked nails, but my face is naked 95% of the time I leave the house.

  3. I absolutely love hitting the pan! I have a couple of things that recently hit the pan, and it is so satisfying to use them up. I am very impressed that you have hit the pan on 6 products!

    1. Thanks Helen, and good for you too!

I hit pan recently on my Anastasia brow duo compact. I’ve had it so long that, even though it’s a powder formula, it’s actually kind of dried out, and it doesn’t go on smoothly anymore–it’s gotten grainy and a little crumbly/chunky. Bummer! But I replaced it during an Ulta special a few months ago, and it’s so nice to have fresh product again!

Do you always apply creams with your fingers, or do you sometimes use a brush? Always curious about how people get makeup onto their skin.

    1. Yes, even powders dry out over time! So glad you good a new one. Your question is a good one. I am often lazy and I like cream shadows, blush and highlighters because I can apply them with my fingers. But foundation I always apply with a brush or blending sponge. If I’m trying for a more precision look with cream eyeshadow, I’ll use a brush. But with ColourPop Super Shock Shadows, I find my fingers work best. I have a couple of mousse eyeshadows, and those I apply with a brush.

  5. I agree, hitting pan on a makeup product is an amazing feat for us makeup lovers. You did great! So many fantastic products in your list here. I’m almost to pan on a few eyeshadows.

    1. Yay! I’m glad that you’re almost there too. Such a feeling of accomplishment LOL

That’s quite a bit of pan there! I go back and forth on cream products. I think blush and eye stuff are my faves in that category, but I still have far more powders floating around than creams.
I have close to half the pan showing on my Laura Mercier Candleglow Perfecting Powder. I remember a lot of people complaining when it came out about how hard it was to pick up anything with a brush, but I soldiered on and it seems the second half of the pan might be a bit softer. I’ve been using it almost daily for about 15 months and it’s only half gone, so I’m considering it $38 well spent. Unless I find something I enjoy more I’ll probably repurchase it in another year when this pan might finally be finished! lol
I did recently empty the smaller mini/travel pot of Dr Jart Cicapair colour correcting cream AND replaced it, though I see a new ‘camo drops’ serum formula available from the same line now…so I might try that one for the heat of summer when I think the super emollient texture of the cream might be too much for me.
I’m also considering it ‘pan’ for my Laneige cushion foundation. The only thing left to do with it is pull the cushion sponge itself out for one last use before recycling the empty container. Truthfully I already opened my backup for that one (lazy) so I really need to just go back and use that last bit of old and be done with it!

    1. Well done, Rach! You’ve made a lot of progress. Is the LM Candleglow Perfecting Powder similar to Hourglass Ambient Lights? Regardless, so impressive that you’re halfway done with it. Powder of any kind is so hard to pan or finish. I did it once a couple of years ago. I have some Dr. Jart BB Cream that I’ve gotta toss because it’s ancient. It was one of the color adjusting ones, but I didn’t get a perfect match. Nevertheless, I liked it and I should explore more of the brand. I’ll look for the Cicapair (?) Color Correcting Cream and the camp drops. Even though I use my creams most often, I own more powder everything!

      1. rach says:

I’ve only ever swatched the Ambient Light powders on the back of my hand, and I would say yes similar, but Candleglow is possibly more subtle? And stiffer texture overall. I remember the Ambient powders as feeling pretty buttery.
Cicapair is the Dr Jart tiger grass line. I’ve totally jumped on the tiger grass bandwagon. My face tolerates it well when it’s angry with me, and it helps with redness. I like the colour correcting cream. I like the thicker non-colour cream in the tube, though it’s too rich to use more than a dab on my face. I love the Re.Pair Serum and Nightly Re.Pair Mask. Basically, give me all the tiger grass. I was pretty happy with my sulfur-laden First Aid Beauty anti-redness serum on its own, but the addition of cica-everything to my skincare arsenal has upped the game. I’m liking it.

        1. Tiger grass? This is the first time I’ve heard of it. I am going to do my homework and look it up! I am very lucky that the rosacea that I had as a kid has most gone away though I have rosy cheeks and red eyelids due to dry eye/blepharitis. I will spend some time in the Dr. Jart section of Sephora. Glad to hear it works for you. The Spring event at Sephora should be coming up in a couple of weeks!

          1. rach says:

OMG YOU’RE RIGHT!!! I’m addicted enough to hit Rouge every year, so one would think I’d remember these things…but apparently not. I’ll start making my list now. 😛

  7. WOO HOO! Pan it! I don’t know why but hitting pan makes me so happy and seeing others do it brings a smile to my face. 🙂

    1. LOL, Kristi, I feel the same way!!

  8. Good for you Allison!I can’t remember the last time I hit pan on anything but it’s been many, many moons!

    1. Exciting to have more stuff that hopefully soon I can toss or recycle!

  9. Hitting pan is pretty amazing considering how much we have. I noticed yesterday that I’ve hit pan on my Hikari pressed powder but I have months to go with it. I’ve hit pan on my favorite Youngblood cream blush too. I have some old MAC e/s I’ve hit pan on but I’ve had those a while.

  10. I’m curious about the Tarte undereye concealer!

  11. I’ve only hit pan once with an eyeshadow. It’s a beautiful blue and I use it like eyeliner other than that I’ve finished two lipsticks in my life. pretty boring I know but I’m just not a makeup kind of girl.

  12. I hit pan so rarely these days. I think the last time was my MAC Blot powder, but I have so many more powders now that I’m not sure when it’s going to happen again! I finish a lot of skincare, but makeup, that’s hard with a large collection!

    1. I agree. Very hard to hit pan that’s why I was so happy that I’ve gotten there with 6 makeup products 🙂

  13. Great job! I flip-flop with products so much I feel like the only thing I ever finish are brow pencils these days. The Tarte concealer looks really great too.

  14. I have a few Colourpops like that! Ha, but still use them down!
