July 2014 Sensationally Sunkissed ipsy Bag

My July ipsy bag arrived last Saturday. The theme this month is “Sensationally Sunkissed”. The makeup bag is hot pink, and it has pinked edges. Another blogger described it as looking like a “ravioli”. That really made me laugh, but I like it anyway. I think it’s cute and fun for summer. My pink clear plastic makeup bag from last July that I carry in my purse all the time finally has a crack in it, so this new bag may be the replacement.

What about the contents? Overall, it was a good month for my ipsy bag.

Sensationally Sun-kissed ipsy Glam Bag July 2014

The only ringer that I want to mention was Hang Ten Dark Tanning Oil SPF 8. I can not imagine why ipsy gave me this product. I have fair skin with plenty of sun damage. I do not tan. I wear an SPF 50 whenever possible. And why would they include a potentially hazardous product like that in anyone’s ipsy bag?  Bad choice, ipsy. Prior to this, I liked Hang Ten’s sunscreens. I didn’t realize they made tanning oil. I don’t think anyone should make tanning oil anymore. End of rant.

What else? I got three favorite products.

The first great surprise was Bare Minerals new 5-in-1 BB Cream Eyeshadow in Divine Wine, a deep greyed purple shade. Although it’s a small sample, it is enough for me to know I love it. I love creams to begin with. This is one of the new type of creams, a wet cream that you apply from a tube with a sponge applicator. It comes in 10 neutral shades. I wore Divine Wine on Saturday night over eye primer though the product has built-in primer so I will skip primer next time. It went on easily and didn’t fade or budge till I took it off 7 hours later. I liked this eye shadow so much I had to check out the other offerings. I went to Sephora, but they weren’t on the floor yet. I went to Ulta, and they had 5 of the shades in a display there. Here are some quick swatches that I made at Ulta.

Bare Minerals 5 in 1 BB Eyeshadow Cream

Not the greatest swatches 🙁 And sorry, I took this picture in artificial light because it’s night and I have to wash my hand, lol. The colors looked much better in the bright white artificial light I saw them in at Ulta (it’s too late to pull out my photo lights and light box, sorry).

I bought the Blushing Pink, shell pink, during the current Ulta coupon promo. Here’s a swatch in daylight. I love it! And when I use up the Divine Wine sample, I’ll purchase that one in a full size too. They’re $18 each.

Next, there’s a deluxe sample Benefit They’re Real Mascara. This is one of my favorite mascaras, and I was happy to get this purse size mascara to replace my old They’re Real sample. I love the formula and the spiky wand.

The third favorite is a new brand and product for me, Elizabeth Mott Tint & Sass Lip & Cheek Tint. It’s like Benefit Benetint. I didn’t get that in my ipsy bag a couple of months ago, so I was glad they gave me this one. Tint & Sass smells like cherries, and it is a cherry shade. I applied it to my lips and cheeks with the sponge applicator, and it was easy to apply and blend. It’s a pretty shade. I wore it today, and it lasted really until I ate dinner, for about 6 hours, though it did fade somewhat over time. I really like this stain on my lips and cheeks, and I’ve already used it a lot. What do you think?

Processed with Rookie

Elizabeth Mott Tint & Sass is full-size, 0.35 oz/10  g, a little bottle but I think it will last quite a while. It sells for $22.99. Good deal, ipsy!

The last product is Lavilin Jojoba Skin Soother Gel Cream, a product that I don’t really get. The tube says that it’s a skin cream for use after intensive exercise. Why? Usually, after running, I don’t apply any skin cream, but if I did, I don’t think I need a specific type of lotion. Do I? I must be missing something. Anyway, it’s a nice gel cream. I like gel cream. I wish it didn’t have alcohol in it, however. But it’s still worth trying.

So after a year, I still look forward to getting my ipsy bag. For 10 bucks, it is almost always worth it. I thought maybe I should switch to another subscription service, but the others that are similarly priced don’t come with a cute little makeup bag. And thanks to some of you wonderful women, I am getting another freebie next month, Tini Wild Plum Lipstick, by trading in 1000 points. Last month, Yilian used my referral code to signup for ipsy, and the 250 points I received put me over the top. Woo hoo! If you’re thinking of taking the plunge, I’d be grateful if you’d use my referral code so I can get more stuff to review! <3 <3 <3

  10. I agree that I was pretty happy with ipsy, even when I didn’t like something, the value always seems to jive with what I did like. I cancelled my sub a couple months ago in my efforts to trim my beauty budget, but I love living vicariously through others now!

Hahaha yep that is totally a pink ravioli. Still cute though! I think I’m probably too picky for subscription boxes but I do love the peek into what others are getting. That tint is a great colour and you’ve definitely inspired me to check out the Bare Minerals shadows. 🙂

    1. That’s good that you know that about yourself, Rach, so you won’t be disappointed! I’m really loving the lip/cheek tint. And by all means check out the Bare Minerals shadows. I love the 2 shades I have <3

  17. I feel you about the tanning oil, they should have included a sunless tanner if they wanted us to be tan. Why include a tanning oil, it’s harkening back to those days before we knew about sunscreen and skin cancer

  19. That lip stain looks great on you! I enjoyed my Ipsy bag, too, apart from that tanning oil. I agree with you – no thanks! Someone suggested it might make a good moisturizing oil, and that’s probably the only way I’ll use it.
Nidia – Lit From Within recently posted…Blue Glittersplosion! My Profile

    1. Thank you! That’s an interesting idea, Nidia. I’ve gotta take a look at the ingredients and maybe I’ll use it as a moisturizing oil too (as if I don’t have enough already, lol)! Glad you had a good bag this month, too!

  20. Overall a good bag for the month…at least based from what you have received.

  23. Lois L says:

I love the 5 in 1 however the color I got was too dark . Allison, what color do you think I should try?

    1. Lois, the color you got should be an accent color to put in the V in the outer corner of your eye or maybe in the crease. I think you need to go to one of Bare Minerals, Sephora, Ulta stores and swatch them. At $18, you want to make sure you’re getting the right shade for you. Since you have somewhat of a tan, some of the shades may be too light for you. Are you going to BRBC to the dinner tonight? If so, I’ll bring Blushing Pink that I bought so you can see it. On my, it’s flesh colored but pretty, and I use the Divine Wine sample in the V.

  24. The only thing I like about this bag is the benefit mascara. I feel like this bag is more hype than anything. It used to be really good.
Melody recently posted…Nars Cosmetics Night Caller Unlawful Blush and Mandore Satin Lip Pencil ReviewMy Profile

    1. That’s too bad, Melody. I’ve used the Eliz Mott lip/cheek tint every day since I got it. I’ve worn the Bare Minerals shadow 5 times since I got it, and it encouraged me to buy another one in a different shade to wear along with the sample. For $10, 3 things that I use all the time was a good deal for me this month. Usually, I get 1-2 things that I really like along with a couple of duds.

  25. I think this is such a good bag!

    Love the blog,
    Evelyn

    1. I like the Bare Minerals 5 in 1 shadows. They are creamy, very neutral, make a good base or a nice nude shadow. I have 2 of the shades. And glad you agree abt the tanning oil! Thanks for commenting, Evelyn! Merry Christmas 🙂
