KB Shimmer Fillin’ Groovy Base & Stunning Leaf of Faith Polish

I needed a new base coat, though I still have about a third of a bottle of now thickened Seche Base in my stash. Recently in a Facebook group, I noticed a recommendation for KB Shimmer Fillin’ Groovy Base Coat, a ridge filling base, and I thought I would try it.

Fillin’ Groovy did a good job smoothing out my nails. Although it looks cream colored in the bottle (I typically hate white base coats like Seche Base), it goes on translucent, thank goodness. It took longer than average to dry, but that’s OK if it performs well. Price $6. So far, so good with this sticky (in a good way) base.

Since I was already at the KB Shimmer website and because I couldn’t get around paying the $4.95 shipping cost (I knew I couldn’t spend $75 to get their free shipping), I figured I should check out the nail polish shades. I had been seeing the new fall collection, All the Fall Things, everywhere lately, and I thought I might pick up one of the polishes. In fact, I had Slay Cozy in my basket when I saw swatches of an older polish, Leaf of Faith, that made me change my mind.

Both shades are gorgeous, but I limited myself to just one so I had to decide. Slay Cozy, a classic autumn holo. Here’s the KB Shimmer description: “Slay Cozy is a nod to all things warm and toasty. A warm, rusty, burnt-orange hue loaded with linear holographic pigment, this perfectly-autumn polish is best in 2 coats.” Just beautiful, as you can see in a lovely photo from Ehmkay Nails.

But Leaf of Faith caught my eye.

Although also described as a fall shade, it looks like Christmas to me since it’s packed with red and gold, though I really don’t care about seasonality. I wear what appeals to me whenever. While I often complain about my difficulty in removing nail polish loaded with glitter and flakes, I couldn’t resist this one from 2019. Here’s KB Shimmer’s description: “The crisp feel of the air, the smell of apple pies baking, trees showing off a kaleidoscope of reds, burgundies and golds: it’s no wonder fall is my favorite season!  Leaf Of Faith pays homage to the glorious Sweetgums and Sugar Maples, and all the other trees that star in nature’s fall show.  A deep cabernet red jelly is the backdrop for glitters in red, orange and gold.  The glitters in this polish add depth and interest with subtle changes in color, and a scattering of holographic glitters gives this polish sparkle and shine.” And the 12 reviews on the website were nothing short of raves for this shade.

In addition, I love the wide, easy to use KB Shimmer brush. I would say that KB Shimmer is in the top tier of my favorite indie polish brands.

So I removed Slay Cozy from my basket and went with Leaf of Faith, and I’m glad I did. I can’t stop looking at this color on my nails!

And in the bright sun or under lights, it is mesmerizing!

Well worth the $10 price.

I put on a coat of my current top coat fave from Glisten & Glow. Price $6.99.

  4. Interesting that the base goes on translucent! I would have totally skipped it if I saw it online because, like you, I also hate white base, or colored base in general.

    1. I was so disappointed when I opened the box and saw that the KB Shimmer base was ivory colored, but it definitely redeemed itself when it went on translucent.
