Kerastase Soin Premier and Bain Therapiste: Treatment and Shampoo Duo for Over-Processed Hair

I have thick, coarse, color-treated hair that was more dried out from a summer spent at the beach than I realized. I wear a hat at the beach as often as I can, but I get too hot wearing a hat when I’m outside jogging or gardening. So in spite of trying to do the right thing, my hair does get exposed to the sun. When I went for my last haircut three weeks ago, my colorist noticed how dry my ends were. Actually, they felt like straw. They were “crispy”! I had my stylist cut off a good two inches or more.

Fortunately, I received a haircare duo from Kerastase via Influenster to test out for an honest review. Kerastase is the brand that Vidal Sassoon Salon, the hair salon I’ve been going to for 20 years (yikes!), uses most often. I trust their judgment, and I often use products from the Kerastase line.

Keraste has recently introduced a new haircare line for very damaged, over-processed hair, Kerastase Resistance Therapiste. Between being color-treated and dried out by the sun, my hair fits into that category. I was sent two of the products in the new line:

Kerastase Therapiste haircare line: Soin Premier & Bain Therapiste neversaydiebeauty.com @redAllison

The products in this line are enriched with FIBRE-KAP, a complex that mimics the keratin associated proteins that bind keratin in healthy hair that are missing from damaged hair. In addition, the products contain RESURRECTION SAP, an extract from a plant that can come back to life after 10 years near death. Wow, now that’s pretty amazing!

What’s also different about this duo is the way that you use them: the Treatment product which is really a “reverse care” super-conditioner goes on first and the shampoo second – just the opposite of the way we usually wash and condition. Hmmm. I guess that makes sense. I sometimes apply argan oil or Indian oil to my hair for a half hour or so before shampooing to protect and treat my hair, so this is very similar. The researchers at Kerastase found that treating the hair first protects it from getting dried out during shampooing.

I tried the duo. I used the Treatment first, left it on for a couple of minutes, shampooed next, and I put on one of my conditioners. My hair definitely was much softer. However, applying the final conditioner was a no-no. By the second day, my hair really needed to be washed again – too much conditioner. The point is to use the Soin Premier, then the Bain Therapiste shampoo, rinse and done! Got it!

Soin Premier Therapiste is a thick white conditioning product with a light fresh scent. The Bain Therapist shampoo is also very thick, white, fresh scented, and makes a ton, I repeat, a TON of suds. So use the shampoo sparingly! Also, make sure you grab the right one. The Soin Premier has the matte finish, and the Bain is shiny. I grabbed the shiny one by mistake but didn’t notice till it was too late, lol.

I like this new duo very much. My only issue is that I will definitely use up the Treatment product way before I need more shampoo, but I guess I can buy it separately.

Here’s how my hair looked. It felt great! I was pleased  🙂 And it’s done a great job keeping my hair feeling soft and silky since. Thanks Keraste and Infuenster!

  1. Kerastase is a great line! My hair stylist uses their products in my hair a lot. I don’t color treat my hair so I don’t use these products but I’m sure they’re super effective!

    1. The new Therapiste line isn’t only for color-treated or processed hair, but for anyone with very dry, damaged hair. But hopefully your hair doesn’t fit into that category, Brianna 😉

  2. Kerastase is a fantastic brand that I’ve used several times in the past! I think I actually still have a spray that I’m using from them, BUT everything I have used I have really enjoyed and it’s made my hair soft and shiny!! I have a somewhat sensitive scalp, but this brand didn’t irritate it at all!

    1. That’s great to hear, Christine! I am a fan of certain Kerastase products from a variety of their lines: the shampoo from the regular yellow line that smells so fabulous, the heat styling spray that smells like grapefruit from the green line, and now these “backwards” hair repair products from the new Therapiste line

  3. I absolutely love Kerastase! This collection sounds fantastic for over-processed hair! Lovely review, Allison!

    1. I know what you mean, Monica. I probably don’t need to buy more haircare products for a couple of years, lol. But I do still have my favorites!

  11. I did a post on reverse hair washing not too long ago, and basically thought it was BS. It sounds silly. But your hair looks great in the photos, so I guess they’re on to something! If I did that, my hair would come out looking like a grease ball, but it looks like it might be a great option for people with dry or damaged hair! Thanks, Allison!

    1. I’m on the fence with the reverse washing trend, truth be told. One of these days I will try the shampoo first and the treatment product second and see if there’s any difference. I sometimes forget and apply a little conditioner at the end too. But I do believe in the pre-treatment part. Prior to receiving this duo, when my hair was very dry, I would apply Darshana Indian oil for a half hour to overnight before washing and my hair came out the best it’s ever been but I did use a little conditioner after shampooing too.

  12. I pretty much think that anything Kerastase makes is gold. I adore them!

  13. This duo sounds so unique! I actually took the survey for this, and was told I was a good match…then nothing came of it. So, I guess they changed their minds lol. But, reading reviews I can see my hair (natural color from root to tips, not processed, not overly dry) is really not an ideal texture for this. I’m sure it would have been too heavy, but still the idea of treatment, then shampoo is interesting!

    1. Yes, I think they ended up going for those of us with processed hair. My crispy ends definitely made me a good candidate. But I’m glad your hair isn’t so damaged. Keraste is such an amazing brand with so many product lines for all kinds of haircare needs 🙂

  14. Their hair care is always so fantastic! Sometimes it can be too fragrant for me but I always love the end results.

  25. My Mom’s been a HUGE fan of Kerastase for years! And I just recently got to try some of their products too 🙂 They’re so good, aren’t they? I just wish the price premium wasn’t that steep, because I love everything I tried.

    1. Yes, I agree, Anastasia! CVS carries the Kerastase brand so sometimes I use my Extrabucks to make them more affordable but CVS can’t carry the entire product line. But I love Kerastase haircare. I have at least one favorite from just about every one of their product lines

  26. Your hair looks gorgeous! I don’t know if I could manage with conditioning before shampooing… I feel like my hair would be so dry after. I’d be willing to try this system though!
Chelsea recently posted…LUSH Halloween 2015My Profile

    1. Truth be told, I feel the same way, Chelsea. But the shampoo in this Kerastase line is very hydrating, and that coupled with the coating action from the upfront conditioner seems to do the job. I haven’t used this process exclusively however, so long-term I don’t know. If my hair feels drier at the ends or if I can’t easily run my fingers through it, I’ll add a bit of a regular, lighter weight conditioner (maybe that’s cheating?!)

  27. I really want to try this duo. I’ve been a fan of their Elixir deep conditioner as it leaves my hair softer then pretty much anything else.

    1. That’s so interesting, Brigitte! Each of the Kerastase lines has a different scent. I love the scent of the “regular” shampoo and the grapefruit scent of the green heat styling spray. The Therapiste line is a fresh, clean scent and it’s not a very strong scent so you might be fine with it. I have thick, coarse hair and it does a good job for me

  30. Your hair looks amazing and so fresh! I have tried Kerastase too, and I can’t remember the product. A serum maybe. I remember loving it!
